Phaidon Press Ltd Nancy Spero
American artist Nancy Spero (b.1929) concentrates on the depiction of women: mythological women, movie women, tortured women. Inspired by classical and modern sources, she collages and imprints her contemporary goddesses on to long, papyrus-like friezes that scroll around museum walls. Her subject matter, which has ranged from the writings of Artaud to the Vietnam War, mirrors her life. Working in Paris in the cultural ferment of the 1960s, she moved to New York in the 1970s to co-establish the feminist gallery A.I.R. and to join with artists and critics such as Leon Golub, Robert Morris and Lucy R Lippard in forming the Art Workers' Coalition. Since the 1980s she has attracted international acclaim, her exquisite works giving form to feminist issues and new critical discourses. The Survey by Jon Bird, cultural theorist and curator of the first British retrospective of Spero's work, discusses developments in her practice since the 1950s. Contemporary art scholar and critic Jo Anna Isaak talks with the artist about her life and work. Art historian Sylvere Lotringer, Edtior of Semiotext(e) and author of Overexposed, focuses on her 1993 installation at the Whitney Museum of American Art. In recognition of the impact Stanley Kubrick's Dr Strangelove made on her, Spero has chosen a scene from the screenplay; key excerpts from Gynesis: Configurations of Woman and Modernity by feminist theorist Alice Jardine on the place of women in a patriarchal culture complete the Artist's Choice section. Also included are a selection of Spero's own writings, many published here for the first time.

A groundbreaking monograph capturing the unique spirit and one-of-a-kind creativity of British fashion icon Sir Paul Smith through his personal selection of 50 inspirational objects and designs Created in close collaboration with design legend Sir Paul Smith, Paul Smith celebrates the iconic brand through the lens of 50 diverse objects, personally selected by Sir Paul himself for the inspiration they have provided him over the years. These carefully-chosen objects have impacted Sir Paul's worldview, creative process, and adherence to a design approach that's imbued with distinctly British wit and eccentricity. Every featured item illuminates a different aspect of the designer's work and leads to discussions on subjects as varied as the formality of a suit, the importance of teamwork, and the power of humor. Opening with a foreword by Jonathan Ive, former chief design officer of Apple, Paul Smith also includes unique contributions - personal letters, drawings, and photos - from fashion and design icons Manolo Blahnik, James Dyson, Martin Parr, John Pawson, and Alice Rawsthorn. The book's colorful cloth cover takes its inspiration from yarn wound around card, which, as well as being one of the 50 objects chosen by Sir Paul to feature in the book, also shows how he creates his famous and iconic stripes. Phaidon Press Ltd Odile Decq, Cornette Benoit
Odile Decq and Benoit Cornette first rose to international prominence with their administrative and social centre buildings for the Banque Populaire de l'Ouest in Rennes in 1990, which has won 10 architectural awards. Based in Paris, they featured in the French "40 under 40" exhibition in 1990 and have since been successful in many European competitions, recently completing two housing schemes in Paris, and working on large-scale urban projects such as their 1994 commission to design the masterplan for the revitalization of the docks at Paris' Port de Gennevilliers. Although Decq and Cornette have been variously described as post-modernist, deconstructionist and high-tech, their architecture is difficult to categorize: the distinctive hallmark of their architecture is their use of metal, for its precision, and sophisticated engineering techniques. This book charts the architects' working process in over 20 buildings and projects, featuring their highly original models, which use colour as a coding system for materials and structural elements, and have an architectural significance in their own right.

Phaidon Press Ltd Constable
No artist has rivalled John Constable (1776-1837) in his powers to express the beauties of the British countryside, especially the scenery of his native East Anglia. He sought above all to make 'pure and unaffected representations of the scenes', and to this end he made detailed studies of the minutest phenomena of nature. He wrote: 'My limited and abstracted art is to be found under every hedge, and in every lane...'. But this feeling for such qualities had to be reconciled with the traditional - and what were for him the essential - demands of of painting pictures for public exhibition. In this book many of his most famous pictures are reproduced, showing how Constable adjusted the fresh, spontaneous handling of paint in his sketches to more formal, academic requirements.John Sunderland's enormously successful survey of the life and work of Constable was first published in 1971. Each full-page colour plate is accompanied by an explanatory text, and over fifty black-and-white illustrations offer comparisons with the paintings.
