Floris Books A Portrait of Camphill: From Founding Seed to Worldwide Movement
The Camphill Movement is a worldwide network of homes and villages for children and adults with special needs. The fascinating feature-articles cover everything from the history of Camphill, to the development of individual communites around the world, and the future challenge of sharing Camphill's message with the wider world. The portrait is painted through debates that affect the Camphill movement as a whole, and through the personal stories that make up its communities. This is a beautiful book filled with pictures, memories and stories, and above all filled with the people who have made Camphill what it is today.

Floris Books The Story of Water: Source of Life
Water shapes our landscapes and sustains life on Earth. It also influences our emotions and inspires imagination and creativity. Yet we take it for granted, treating it as a convenience or for cleansing. In this comprehensive new book, Alick Bartholomew argues controversially that water is the medium of communication between all living organisms. He suggests that only through understanding waters true role in Nature can we begin to live responsibly and sustainably. The book covers all aspects of water, from water in the cosmos and solar system, through the Earth's water cycles, to water in our bodies and in plants. It goes on to consider the larger picture as well: water's cosmic role, the memory of water, and its crucial relationship to the quantum field. Finally, the author addresses the future: the global water crisis and how to access the best quality of living water for human health. This is a serious but popularly-written illustrated book which offers an original and fascinating study of water as a vital dimension that interconnects all life on Earth.

Floris Books Free from Dogma: Theological Reflections in the Christian Community
The Christian Community is a religious movement which draws on the help and inspiration of Rudolf Steiner. One way in which it differs from other churches is that it does not demand adherence to any creed or view of the world from its members. Nevertheless, spiritual, philosophical and religious questions arise, and by thinking about and discussing them, members can become part of the spiritual conversation that has been underway for the last 2000 years, since human beings have grappled to understand what they experience in Jesus Christ. This book, the first of its kind to explore the theology of The Christian Community in a systematic way, asks such questions and offers many insights into religious life and experience. In the first half, Tom Ravetz addresses questions about God, the Trinity, the Incarnation, the Holy Spirit and evil. In the second half, he traces humanity's journey from oneness, to multiplicity, and to a new oneness through community.

Floris Books Children's Games in Street and Playground: Volume 2: Hunting, Racing, Duelling, Exerting, Daring, Guessing, Acting, Pretending
Perhaps this book should come with a warning to parents: within these pages, children deliberately scare each other, ritually hurt each other, take foolish risks, promote fights, and play ten against one. And yet throughout, they consistently observe their own sense of fair play.'During the past fifty years, shelf-loads of books have been written instructing children in the games they ought to play -- and some even instructing adults on how to instruct children in the games they ought to play -- but few attempts have been made to record the games children in fact play.'This was Iona and Peter Opie's pertinent observation in 1969, and it was this gap that they sought to fill with their exhaustive survey, through the 1960s, of the games that children 'in fact play' aged roughly between six and twelve years of age, and when outdoors -- and usually out of sight. The Opies weren't interested in formal games and sports supervised by parents or teachers. What excited them were the rough-and-tumble games for which, as one child described, 'nothing is needed but the players themselves.' They were also anxious that, in their meticulous recording of the games, the spirit of the play, the zest, variety and disorderliness, should not be lost. The result was their classic work Children's Games in Street and Playground. To aid a clear and lively presentation of their remarkable study, the original single book has been divided into two. Both volumes record games played in the street, park, playground and wasteland of more than 10,000 children from the Shetland Isles to the Channel Islands, although the majority of the information comes from children living in big cities such as London, Liverpool, Bristol and Glasgow. This second volume focuses on games involving seeking, hunting, racing, duelling, exerting, daring, guessing, acting and pretending. More than 85 games are described in detail including the rhymes and saying children repeat while playing them, together with the different names under which they are played. Brief historical notes are also included where relevant. The children of the 1960s, the Opies noted, are often thought 'to be incapable of self-organization, and to have become addicted to spectator amusements.' to the extent that adults must be relied on to provide play materials, ideas and time to play with them. The same attitudes are still widespread today with our concerns about television and computer games, and the middle-class parental impulse to fill our children's days with organised classes and play dates. 'However much children may need looking after, they are also people going about their own business within their own society.' There are important lessons to be learned from this book about giving children the time and physical space to be themselves with other children.

He studied medicine and during this time came across the work of Rudolf Steiner. Soon after graduating he worked with Ita Wegman in Switzerland, where he also met his wife, Tilla. He was a pioneer in the early days of Pilgramshain, a home for children with special needs in Silesia, Germany. Here he had a large medical practice as well as being the focus of a group of young people interested in Steiner's work.Following the annexation of Austria by the Nazis, König and many of the young people around him came to Britain as refugees. Floris Books Nature's Due: Healing Our Fragmented Culture
-- By an acclaimed author in his field-- Challenges the ideas of our modern scientific culture-- Far-reaching consequences for how we understand and relate to the natural worldOur scientific culture, which gave birth to modern technology, is in desperate need of change. Science has largely meant groups of specialists working in separate disciplines, seeking answers to narrowly defined questions which have little or nothing to do with the living world. The last few years, however, have seen a shift to a more integrated, holistic approach to how we view and understand our world. There is still much work to be done. Most modern people have come to accept a fragmented culture whereby science isolates us from the natural world. As a result, we feel we can govern it and dominate it as we please. Brian Goodwin, acclaimed author of How the Leopard Changed Its Spots, argues for a view of nature as complex, interrelated networks of relationships. He proposes that, in order for us to once again work with nature to achieve true sustainability on our planet, we need to adopt a new science, new art, new design, new economics and new patterns of responsibility. We must be willing to pay nature its due: to recognise what we owe to the natural world and resist exploiting it solely for our own ends. This is an ambitious, wide-ranging book with far-reaching consequences, and will be essential reading for all those interested in how nature and human culture can co-exist in the future.

The relationship between the human soul and the stars has been central to the spiritual and esoteric traditions of Western thought, and many other cultures, for thousands of years. Medieval Christians thought that heaven was located above the earth, beyond the stars. Our modern society, however, has largely severed the relationship between the human spirit and the sky. This book explores ideas, beliefs and practices which meet at the boundary of psychology and cosmology, the universe and human imagination. This book addresses this special relationship from a variety of challenging and inspiring approaches. The contributors include James Hillman, the founder of archetypal psychology and Jungian analyst; astrologer Liz Greene; Professor Neville Brown of Mansfield College, Oxford; Nicholas Pearson of the Temenos Academy; Professor Jarita Holbrook of the University of Arizona; Dr Angela Vos of the University of Kent; Bernadette Brady; Jules Cashford; Noel Cobb, the former editor of Sphinx; Cherry Gilchrist; Robert Hand; and Professor Richard Tarnas of the California Institute of Integral Studies.

Floris Books Kings and Prophets: Saul, David, Solomon, Elijah, Jonah, Isaiah and Jeremiah
In an age where much of the Bible is frequently proclaimed to be irrelevant, perhaps it is the prophets of the Old Testament who are the least regarded of all. What significance could these obscure historical figures from a small nation -- at best, examples of moral uprightness and devotion -- have for us today?Emil Bock argues that they are, in fact, hugely relevant. He shows that it was among the Israelite-Jewish people of the last pre-Christian millennium that the true pulse of the spirit of the age was beating. For that period, they were the brightly-illuminated centre of world history, a focus for all the life and endeavours of humankind. He paints a picture of the Old Testament prophets as being guided from above by the spirit of Christ, preparing the way for his human incarnation. In a parallel analogy, he also shows how the prophets help prepare our own souls to meet Christ.

Floris Books The Three Years: The Life of Christ Between Baptism and Ascension
How can a scientifically-minded person approach the healings and miracles of the Gospels, including such events as the raising of Lazarus and the Resurrection itself? Emil Bock rediscovers the works of Christ without minimizing the difficulties. He brings together historical records and the geographical background of the Gospels, all the while keeping sight of their spiritual wisdom.Bock considers the Gospel of John to give the most precise record of the events of Christ's three year ministry, as well as being the Gospel with the deepest esoteric significance. This profound study reveals a new understanding of Jesus' incarnation on earth.

Floris Books Carmina Gadelica: Hymns and Incantations
The Carmina Gadelica is the most comprehensive collection of poems and prayers from the Gaelic tradition of oral poetry. Gathered by Alexander Carmichael, in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland, 'from Arran to Caithness, from Perth to St. Kilda'. The poems had been handed down through the generations in a living oral tradition. This tradition and the way of life which sustained it have now disappeared but these poems and prayers live on to remind us of the faith of the unknown poets who composed them. Previously only available as a bilingual text in six volumes, this one-volume edition in English only is an important contribution to the wider awareness of Celtic literature. John MacInnes' introduction puts the poems in the context of the life and folklore of the Gaelic community.
