Rizzoli International Publications Alex Katz
Alex Katz has found his audience. It s not the first time. Over seven decades, the artist has developed his vision with determination as the tides of avant-garde and academic fashion ebbed and flowed. His first audience was other painters (including de Kooning and Philip Guston), and today, still, he is perhaps best understood by other artists: those who appreciate how difficult it is to make something so simple, so well. Working in a representational style while his classmates celebrated Abstract Expressionism, eschewing slick surfaces for a pared-down view while his peers went glossy with Pop, Katz cleaved to one vision, a few locations, and subjects. Katz s endurance and commitment to developing an original American style is explored in depth, from his boyhood influences to an artistic circle that included John Ashbery, Ted Berrigan, Lois Dodd, Kenneth Koch, Frank O Hara, Fairfield Porter, Yvonne Rainer, Larry Rivers, and Paul Taylor. Sketches, works on paper, and archival material selected by the artist s son, the poet Vincent Katz, give a fuller picture of the painter and his world. The more than 250 paintings reproduced at an unprecedented scale will be the most comprehensive collection available in a single publication.

Guggenheim Museum Publications,U.S. Alex Katz: Gathering
The evolution of Alex Katz: nearly 80 years of restless innovation in portraiture and landscape across painting, works on paper and sculpture Across decades of intense creative production, Alex Katz has sought to capture a state of “absolute awareness” in paint. Whether evoking a glancing exchange between friends or a shaft of light filtered through trees, he has aimed to create a record of “quick things passing,” compressing the flux of everyday life into a condensed burst of optical perception. Published on the occasion of the artist’s first US career retrospective in more than 30 years, Alex Katz: Gathering offers a definitive account of Katz’s artistic project, demonstrating both its marked coherence and restless evolution. Generously illustrated, the book features the full breadth of the artist’s work across mediums and formats, from intimate sketches of riders on the New York City subway in the late 1940s to the rapturous, monumentally scaled landscapes that have dominated his recent production. Essays by artists, writers and art historians offer fresh, authoritative overviews of the artist’s practice alongside more focused considerations of specific facets of his art, including his flower paintings, collages, prints, freestanding “cutouts” and set design collaborations with the Paul Taylor Dance Company. A sourcebook of historical reviews, essays and poems rounds out the volume, which offers an overdue reassessment of the artist’s oeuvre. Alex Katz (born 1927) is one of America’s most iconic and prolific artists. His work has been the subject of more than 250 solo exhibitions and 500 group exhibitions since 1951 and can be found in over 100 public collections worldwide.

Karma Alex Katz: Beauty
Elegant monochrome glamour in Katz's new print series This handsome clothbound catalog gathers Alex Katz’s recent titular print portfolio. The series of 25 prints features close-up, black-and-white portraits that remove the subjects from any contextual backdrop, emphasizing instead subtle shifts in expression. Rendered in bold lineation and tightly framed, the women depicted recall the models and celebrities featured in mid-20th-century fashion imagery, underscoring Katz’s ongoing fascination with perceptions of beauty and glamour that permeate the public sphere. The portraits are bookended by a pair of meditations on beauty: Carter Ratcliff imagines a comedically philosophical dialogue between himself and beauty, and Jarrett Earnest shares 31 encounters with beauty in art and life. Alex Katz (born 1927) is one of America’s most iconic and prolific artists. His work has been the subject of more than 250 solo exhibitions and 500 group exhibitions since 1951 and can be found in over 100 public collections worldwide. Katz is best known for his large-scale canvases of flatly rendered figures cast against a monochrome background.

Richard Gray Gallery Alex Katz Autumn
New large-scale paintings by Alex Katz capture impressions of fall in all its radiant gloryFor his new series painted in 2022 and 2023, American artist Alex Katz pushes his palette to an intense range of high-key blues, deep reds and pinks, and golden yellows to most fully express the color of the changing season. Autumn follows the eponymous exhibition at Gray Gallery in Chicago: Katz's 10th solo exhibition at this venue and his first exhibition of large-scale landscapes since 2018. The increasingly abstract new compositions are anchored by strong black paint strokes, contrasting the architecture of the tree branches against the brilliantly hued leaves and sky. Other works in the exhibition, from the related series Field's End and Tree Top, offer more subtle landscapes in muted greens, yellows and grays. This catalog includes color plates of all these works, and opens with a new poem by the artist's son Vincent Katz.Alex Katz

Silvana Jimmy Katz: Closed Session
"The style that Jimmy Katz has developed over the years has become a distinctive feature in the iconography of jazz photography, comparable to the tone of Louis Armstrong's trumpet or the sound of John Coltrane's saxophone." - Michael Cuscuna (Blue Note) The volume, published on the occasion of Umbria Jazz 2019, collects 80 images by Jimmy Katz (New York, 1957), award-winning photographer of the most famous jazz musicians. Over the course of two decades, Katz has immortalised the main actors of the jazz scene against the background of New York: Cassandra Wilson, Herbie Hancock, Sonny Rollins, Keith Jarrett, Ornette Coleman, Chick Corea, Brad Mehldau, Pat Metheny and many more. In the studio, in clubs, on the streets, at work or at rest, Katz portrays the musicians in their most intimate aspects, capturing the traits that unequivocally define their personality. The wise use of lights and the glimpses of New York locations make his shots iconic and unmistakable, a sincere testimony to his great passion for jazz. Text in English and Italian.

Richard Gray Gallery Alex Katz: The White Coat
The serial and the sartorial: permutations of a motif in new portraits by Alex Katz Published for the artist’s 2021 show at Gray Chicago, Alex Katz: The White Coat debuts the latest series from Alex Katz (born 1927), titled Vivien in White Coat: 11 large-scale portraits depicting Vivien Bittencourt, the painter’s daughter-in-law, wearing a radiant white coat. Using a palette dominated by white, black and pale blue, Katz radically crops and magnifies the figure from an array of dynamic perspectives within the picture plane. Balancing the specific and the abstract, the intimate and the remote, the geometric and the gestural, Katz positions the figure in space with deftness, brevity and sartorial elegance. Notwithstanding Katz’s seriality, the white coat appears mysterious and enigmatic within each composition. Alex Katz: The White Coat features an essay by renowned curator and writer Jan Verwoert, 42 color illustrations and an artist’s biography.

Hirmer Verlag Benjamin Katz: Berlin Havelhöhe 1960
In the 1950s the hospital Berlin-Havelhöhe (today the Clinic for Anthropo-sophical Medicine) took over the building that had originally been erected as the National Socialist State Academy for Aviation. It was also there that the pilots who had attacked Guernica in 1934 as part of the Condor Legion had been trained. In 1960, Benjamin Katz fell ill with tuberculosis for a period of one and a half years. He stayed in Havelhöhe and produced an extensive collection of photographs during this time. 48 enlargements together with 380 working prints from the negatives on 30 facsimiled DIN-A4 pages document on the one hand the everyday routine as a patient, but also the architecture and the traces of National Socialism.

Karma Alex Katz & Joe Brainard: Flowers Journals
Alex Katz celebrates an old friendship, illustrating Brainard’s 1970s journals with charcoal flower drawings In this tender posthumous collaboration initiated by Alex Katz (born 1927), the artist embellishes journal entries by his old friend Joe Brainard (1941–94) with a new series of exquisite charcoal drawings of flowers (a popular motif in Brainard’s own art). Katz and Brainard often collaborated with poets—particularly those of the New York School, such as Ted Berrigan, Anne Waldman and Ron Padgett—on artists' books, poetry publications, book covers, writings and paintings. Brainard’s journal entries in this volume, written between 1971 and 1972, express this milieu, with accounts of conversations and expeditions with Waldman and Padgett as well as frequent mention of his appreciation for Katz’s work: “How Alex has remained so pure all these years is beyond me,” he notes in one entry, enumerating his favorite Katz works. Katz’s charcoal drawings are simple and clear in execution, matching the serene clarity that famously characterizes Brainard’s prose.

Emerald Publishing Limited Jack Katz: Seduction, the Street and Emotion
This book is a timely re-introduction to the work and life of one of criminology’s most respected theorists, Jack Katz, exploring the current relevance of this important author and highlighting his work to a broad audience. The scholarship of Jack Katz, as evidenced in his seminal Seductions of Crime and otherwise, has over the past three decades offered an alternative philosophical perspective to the study of crime and criminal behavior that is not defined by quantitative method or approach. Katz has radically altered the focus and range of contemporary criminology in a way that few if any other scholars have done and his work been foundational in the development of cultural criminology, itself now a high-profile alternative criminological perspective. Through a diverse range of chapters from recognized authors in the field – including a major new interview with Jack Katz himself, in which he describes the development of his ideas, work, and growth as a researcher – contributions take up aspects of his work from a variety of perspectives and discuss and expand its contemporary relevance to the discipline of criminology. This book will appeal to postgraduate students and scholars in the areas of criminology, cultural criminology, critical criminology, phenomenology, and sociology.

Hatje Cantz Alex Katz Catalogue Raisonné: Prints 1947-2022
Before the rise of Pop Art proper, Alex Katz developed an iconic style of figurative painting in the early 1960s— influenced by film, television, and billboard advertising. Seemingly detached and incredibly stylish, he created portraits of the New York scene as well as idyllic landscapes. Printmaking plays an equally central role in Katz’s work. He uses lithographs, etchings, silkscreens, woodcuts and linocuts to reproduce, reflect and further reduce his bold aesthetic, while retaining the radiant color characteristic for his paintings. Since the first edition in 2011, Katz has almost doubled his output of prints—this timely new edition includes his complete prints, cutout editions, artists’ books, and also lists his works of applied art like book illustrations and public art projects. New essays and interviews with the artist give profound insights into the work of one of the foremost American artists of the present.

Eakins Press,N.Y. Walker Evans: The Interview: With Leslie George Katz
Walker Evans in his own words: the legendary interview, back in print In 1971, Art in America published an interview with Walker Evans conducted by Leslie George Katz, writer and publisher of the Eakins Press. The interview is charming and illuminating in its clarity and candor. Nearing the end of his life, Evans speaks freely about his influences and how he got started as a photographer (“I was damn well going to be an artist and I wasn’t going to be a businessman,” he remembers), and reflects back on his work and his thinking. The interview has become legendary, consulted by curators, scholars and students for half a century and considered a definitive source for insights into the process, philosophy and personality of one of America’s greatest photographers. In 1995, the Eakins Press Foundation republished Evans’ interview in a deluxe clothbound edition titled Walker Evans Incognito. More than 20 years later, this new edition brings the Evans interview back into print in an elegant and affordable volume for a new generation. Walker Evans scholar Anne Bertrand introduces the interview and its publication history, and contributes notes throughout the text that provide important contextual information. Walker Evans: The Interview offers an opportunity to rediscover the man behind the famous images, in his own words. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Walker Evans (1903–75) took up photography in 1928. His book collaboration with James Agee, Let Us Now Praise Famous Men (1941), which portrayed the lives of three white tenant families in southern Alabama during the Depression, has become one of that era's most defining documents. Evans joined the staff of Time magazine in 1945, and shortly after moved to Fortune magazine, where he stayed until 1965. That year, he became a professor of photography at the Yale University School of Art. Evans died at his home in Old Lyme, Connecticut, in 1975. Leslie George Katz (1918–97) was the founder and publisher of the Eakins Press Foundation. Until his death in 1997, he wrote extensively about American art and culture, and through his sustained efforts to celebrate his heroes—Thomas Eakins, Walt Whitman, and Walker Evans—found a way to define a new sort of democratic, patriotic intellectualism.

Rizzoli International Publications Alex Katz: Dance & Theater: The Art of Performance
Since Alex Katz first painted the Paul Taylor in 1959, he has invited dancers to model for him. Dance, according to the artist, belongs to the same long tradition of gestures as painting. This publication is the first to examine the many decades of Katz s work for the stage, including the ways that he introduced tenets of postwar painting into theatre and dance aesthetics. I d never seen anything like it, Katz recalls of his first encounter with the work of dancer and choreographer Paul Taylor. The two partnered on fifteen productions for which Katz innovated with flat lighting, humorous obstacles, and framing mechanisms. His involvement with Paul Taylor led to collaborations with other companies including Yoshiko Chuma, Laura Dean, William Dunas, and Parsons. Among Katz s most celebrated sets is the ensemble of cutouts he created for Kenneth Koch s 1961 production, George Washington Crossing the Delaware. Katz heightened the absurdity of the Revolutionary War-inspired play with Pop-adjacent figures and props. This publication brings together paintings, sketches, costumes, photographs, film stills, and ephemera. Newly-commissioned essays, unpublished materials, and major paintings will provide an overview of Katz s working relationships with individual choreographers and shed new light on avant-garde collaborations in New York between the 1960s and 80s.

In this volume, ten leading scholars critically discuss Katz’s work with an appreciation for Katz’s importance in reshaping the way Jewish history is studied.
