Discovery Walking Guides Ltd The National 3 Peaks - Taking Up the Challenge
Discovery Walking Guides "Celebrating 25 Years of Adventures" is slashing the selling price of its Challenge biiks from GBP8.99 to GBP4.99 until 30 September 2013. Undertaking the National Three Peaks walk has become a hugely popular challenge. Many 'challengers' are motivated by a wish to raise money for a charitable cause. But as well as that, more and more people are seeking personal milestones in their lives; seeking to test themselves, their stamina, their grit and determination. For many the National Three Peaks provides one such milestone. But it can be even more. It can be great fun, an adventure, a memorable, enjoyable experience of team and individual achievement. For a few it can even be a life changing event. Sadly for others it can be a failure, a disappointment. One of the most common reasons for this outcome is preparation or rather the lack of it combined with mistaken or unrealistic expectations about the event and perhaps even themselves. The Three Peaks Challenge is never going to be a walk in the park. But with proper preparation and know-how it is eminently attainable for most people. That's the reason for this book. When Steve's team started to plan for the challenge they found information was readily available on routes, timings, advice on training and hillcraft. But nowhere could they find such advice combined with a full account of a successful challenge attempt. What they really wanted and needed was to get a true feel for what they would be facing. They wanted to gauge their capabilities against others who had already succeeded, to identify with the highs and lows and anticipate or forestall their own. This then is their story, plus suggestions on training, walking routes (including GPS track logs from the actual paths walked), driving routes, navigation, equipment, meals, and accommodation. Their Challenge Plan ran to 11 pages of text and checklists. It is included at the end of the book for you to copy. Contents A Germ of an Idea: An overnight bivvy on Scafell Pike; A midnight encounter with 3 Peakers Decision Time: Should we, shouldn't we? A fitness test; Some early lessons; Finding a support team Getting Fit: Our training regime; The Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge; Snowdon x 2; A little upset; A suggested training schedule Getting Organised: The areas to be planned Walking Routes: The sequence of the mountains; The Ben Nevis Mountain Track; Scafell Pike routes; The Snowdon alternatives Road Routes: The possibilities; Ben Nevis to Wasdale; Wasdale to Pen y Pass; Our final schedule Creating the Plan: Roles and responsibilities; Our team's ground rules D Day Minus 1: Getting together; Problems with a sat-nav; Drinking too much...The Real Thing...: Throbbing heads; North to Fort William; Slips, trips and falls; Murk on Scafell Pike; Team issues; Frustration on Snowdon; Success at the end The Remains of the Day: A return match; Presentations and awards Reflections: 'I knew you'd make it'; The lasting after effects; Next time What Passes for Wisdom: A few do's and don'ts The Plan in Detail GPS Waypoints & Coordinates: Ben Nevis; Scafell Pike; Snowdon Accommodation list. New for the second edition of Britain's best sell National 3 Peaks guidebook are OS Explorer route maps for the three ascents/descents of Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon at their full OS 25,000 scale.

Discovery Walking Guides Ltd Sierra de Aracena - a Walk! Guidebook
A hundred kilometres northwest of Seville lies a region of truly unspoilt rural Spain. Once a province of Portugal the Sierra de Aracena encapsulates almost everything that we look for as the idyllic walking destination; rural beauty in flora and fauna, breathtaking landscapes, unspoilt towns and villages linked by old donkey trails. All it lacks are high mountains. The Spanish have known about this isolated region for sometime and arrive at weekends and in mid-summer, but on weekdays and out of season it returns to peaceful tranquility. Few 'outsiders' know of this delightful region and you can be the first to read about it in English. We first discovered the region five years ago, when we thought it too isolated to justify a guide. Since then we have returned regularly, completing our walking research and map surveys in Oct/Nov 2003 and final walking research in May 2004. Now we feel the time is here to introduce you to our secret. Picture sloping meadows dotted with Cork Oaks where herds of inquisitive Iberian black pigs roam at will in a piggy paradise, switch to pollarded Chestnut trees with lively herds of goats, switch to the flock of sheep and lambs that graze outside the apartments at Villa Turistica Fuenteheridos, add in horses and donkeys grazing amongst the trees and meadows and you have the picture of an idyllic bucolic landscape. The wild life is equally impressive, we saw two black vultures on our first day and another two days later. Wild flowers abound like nowhere else. Botanists arriving in Spring will think they have landed in paradise. At first we tried keeping notes of the species, but had to give up because there were so many including several we had not seen before. The undergrazed meadows are a carpet of colour from the flowers. Wild Peonies colonise the chestnut orchards west of Castano del Robledo. Occasionally one species will dominate a meadow or hillside but normally there is a complete mix of species lining our walking routes. Keen plants people should double our walking times just to allow time to marvel at the wild flowers. And the walking, with settlements linked by a rural network of tracks and trails centuries old you will not be seeing much of the quiet tarmac roads in the region. Tracks and trails range from immaculate cobbling to occasional cobbling to dirt and some are eroded by storm damage. Most of the time we are on clear well-made trails but be ready for some rough stuff. This is not a mountainous region but the steep sided ridges that comprise the Sierra de Aracena have plenty of 'puff and grunt' ascents, most just melt away but Linares de la Sierra to Alajar when we were caught in a downpour was quite hard work. 'Adventurous leisure walker' is how we would catagorise the walking with plenty of ups and downs so a moderate level of fitness is needed. Sierra de Aracena is far from the realms of mass tourism and the nearest you will find to crowds are busloads of Spanish pensioners visiting the Grutas de Maravilla caves in Aracena and the famous ham factories in Jabugo. Horse riding holidays are becoming popular, expect jodhpurs with breakfast at the Sierra de Aracena Hotel and Finca Valbono. Headwater offer an 'Undiscovered Andalucia' week of guided walking in the region. We flew to Malaga, picked up a pre-booked Peugot 206 and drove the 300 kilometres to stay at Villa Turistica de Fuenteheridos. There are hotels and modern hostels in Aracena, Fuenteheridos, Grazalema, Almonaster and La Posada in the country north of Cartagena; full accommodation information is in the book. In Oct/Nov 2003 we visited the Feria de Setas in Aracena to marvel at the amazing wild mushrooms collected from the local woodland. This time it was the Feria de Animales like a small county show for cattle, sheep, goats and pigs; but mostly an excuse for the regions farmers to get together for three days of 'Archers' style conversation, eating and not a little drinking. "Sierra de Aracena - a Walk! Guidebook" will introduce you to this beautiful region through our 27 fully detailed walking routes backed by masses of useful information. Every route has 1:40,000 scale colour mapping from our "Tour & Trail Map", plus GPS Waypoints for pinpoint navigational accuracy.

Discovery Walking Guides Ltd Rutland Water Challenge Map and Guide
Rutland Water is the UK's largest man-made lake set in 4,200 acres of parkland including a wide, hard surfaced, walkway making the 'Water' an ideal introduction to long distance walking. There are four official, family friendly, recreation centres and nature reserves including the Rutland Osprey Project. Add in picturesque villages and the town of Oakham and you will soon understand why Rutland Water has become one of England's favourite 'Daycation' destinations. Rutland Water Challenge Map and Guide is a 25k scale OSlike map with the Challenge route specially highlighted. We licence OS 50k scale mapping which is then doubled in size to produce an OSlike 25k map but the features, text and logos are now doubled in size making them much easier to read under Challenge conditions. Rutland Water Challenge Route is added and specially highlighted so that our route stands out against the OSlike 25k map. Then we add the additional detail you might need including local hostelries along with the three walking routes; Hambleton Peninsula 8.3kms, Circular 24.5kms and the full Challenge route at 36kms. For each of the three routes we have gps track and waypoints as a gpx file; the zip file of the gpx files is available as a free download. These gps track and waypoints gpx files can be used on all gps phone apps and gps units. The 33 waypoints of the full Challenge route are highlighted on the map, and our Rutland Water Challenge Map is available as a free digital Custom Map download for Garmin gps users. On the reverse of the map sheet is our Locator Map using OS Opendata showing the location of, and access to, Rutland Water relative to a wide area of England. The result is a double sided 600mm by 600mm map design. We then print the map design on a 100 micron plastic substrate using a special UV curing inks process on the UK's only press capable of using this latest technology. The result is a lightweight map that is both waterproof and tearproof, and fully recyclable, that will survive anything your Rutland Water Challenge can throw at it and afterwards will fold up like new.

Discovery Walking Guides Ltd Walk! La Gomera
La Gomera is the ultimate get-away-from-it-all island: easy-going, unspoilt, friendly, isolated from the hustle and bustle of modern living, and so laid back it's virtually supine - even the volcanoes have been dormant for millions of years. The walks, however, are a bit more energetic. For the new 4th edition of Walk! La Gomera Charles Davis has teamed up with Jan Kostura. Jan brings his wide experience and passion for the Canaries, checking, re-walking and revising existing routes, and adding a couple of his own adventures, including a new Top Three Gomeran walk. Two routes have been dropped as having become too dangerous, but the good news is that many of the more harum-scarum walks have been improved through path clearing and the addition of railings to the vertiginous stretches. Other good news is that the devastating forest fires of 2012 have proved not nearly as damaging as we feared, leaving most of our itineraries unscathed. In short, there is every reason to take off and explore La Gomera, or to return with this new edition to revive acquaintances and make some new discoveries at the same time. All the trails have been surveyed and mapped using GPS satellite navigation. The authors and their co-walkers have walked all these routes, ensuring accuracy and up to date information for hikers. Clear descriptions guide the walker both to the starting point and throughout the routes, with gradings, distances, timings and altitudes all symbolized, as are vertigo alerts and refreshment possibilities on or at ends of the routes. There are 34 detailed walking adventures with routes ranging from a couple of 90 minute 4 kilometre walks, up to challenging trails taking over 6 hours, covering 20 kilometres including ascents & descents of 1060 metres. Each route includes its own map sections with the route and waypoints clearly marked. Map sections are developed from the La Gomera Tour & Trail Super-Durable Map, the most up to date and toughest map of the island. GPS waypoint files for all the 34 routes are available in three formats as a free zip file download from the Discovery Walking Guides website.

Discovery Walking Guides Ltd GR221 Mallorca's Long Distance Walking Route
Walk! GR221 Mallorca's Long Distance Trail - The Dry Stone Way. If you want to get away from it all , there is no surer way than strapping on your boots, shouldering your backpack, and embarking on a long distance path; and there are few long distance paths more beguiling and more crammed with adventure than Mallorca s GR221, La Ruta de Pedra en Sec or The Dry Stone Way. Anybody who has visited Mallorca will appreciate the justice of the GR221's title. Following ancient bridleways along the length of the Tramuntana range, from Port d'Andratx in the southwest to Pollenca in the northeast, the GR221 touches on dry stone in its every manifestation, from the raw rock of the peaks and sweeping fields of karst to the tailored stones that have always been the island's building material of choice. In some cases, we use immaculately paved trails, at other times we walk on bare rock below looming cliffs, and everywhere we cross the rocky passes that have always been the portals between the Mallorca's otherwise isolated communities. En route, we see dry-stone huts, dry-stone springs, dry-stone threshing circles, dry-stone snowpits, dry-stone walls, dry-stone limekilns, dry-stone byres, dry-stone stiles, dry-stone bread ovens, dry-stone wells ...basically, anything you can prefix with 'dry-stone', we get it. Moreover, there is enough variety packed into this trail to fill an itinerary twice as long, the dry stone being broken up by plains of citrus groves, terraces of olive trees, forests of Holm Oak, exquisite pastoral enclaves, and spectacular valleys laced with glittering threads of mountain torrents, all of it backed by the broad blue palette of the Mediterranean. In the course of its 115 kilometres, the Ruta de Pedra en Sec takes walkers into places most tourists never see and offers us a bird's eye view of this magnificent landscape, giving visitors a complete picture of the Tramuntana range in a single holiday, freeing one from constraints of time and transport, and lending a coherence to the experience that day walks can only achieve over the course of a far longer and more costly trip. Features of Walk! GR221: Full details concerning the state of the route and accommodation options. Specific advice and comprehensive practical information to help you plan your trip. Detailed walking descriptions for each stage of the itinerary, including frequent timings to aid navigation and check your progress. GPS waypoints for every key point on the route. Full colour 1:40,000 scale maps drawn from our own surveys. Coloured photos illustrating each stage and dedicated photo pages so you can see at a glance what to look forward to each day. Walking route summaries including ratings for Effort, Time, Distance, Ascents/Descents, Refreshments and Vertigo risk. Altitude profiles drawn from our own GPS records. Alternative itineraries. Links to other walks. Town sketches describing the settlements en route. Gobbets giving background information about the island's history and culture. Note that this book is matched with the Mallorca North & Mountains Tour & Trail Map (paper & Super-Durable editions).

Discovery Walking Guides Ltd Walk! Costa del Sol (Axarquia)
We celebrate a Costa del Sol that does not correspond to the cliches, a Costa del Sol that is all right rather than all wrong, a playground of green valleys and gilded mountain tops, a hidden idyll unknown to most visitors, a haven for dedicated walkers and adventurous tourists alike, a place in which every nook is graced with some gratifying discovery and every outing is a great adventure. The majority of walks are aimed at the adventurous leisure walker, people who will on the whole have some experience of hiking in mountains, are happy to invest a certain amount of effort for a corresponding reward. Covering the best preserved stretch of coastline, the prettiest villages, and most spectacular mountains, Walk! Costa del Sol explores the Axarquia region east of Malaga, an area blessed with grand summits, dizzying pinnacles, dramatic crags, deep ravines, delightful streams, stunning views, and the finest coves on the Costa del Sol, and all of it knitted together by a network of paths, trails, tracks and lanes so beguiling that walking is by far the best way to explore this lovely landscape. THE COAST: TORRE DEL MAR, TORROX COSTA, NERJA, MARO are well-placed for accessing the itineraries between Canillas de Aceituno and Competa. THE MOUNTAINS: THE SIERRAS DE TEJEDA and ALMIJARA The Sierra is a discrete massif defined by cliffs, gullies and gorges, and culminating in the Iberian Peninsula's westernmost 2000 metre summit (La Maroma, Walk 35), while the Sierra Almijara comprises numerous mini-ranges separated by canyons. The traditional dividing point between the two sierras is Puerto de Competa, which we visit in Walk 36. The joys of these mountains are manifold, including bulbous karstic domes and vertiginous pinnacles, dramatic cliffs draped with ragged crags and grand ridges dominating the glittering blue sea; there are uplands patched with ancient pastures and dotted with the ruins of remote cortijos (farmhouses), there are terraces stippled with olive and almond trees, hillsides swaddled in a buttery blanket of yellow-flowering shrubs, valleys flanked by shady forests of conifer and cork oak, and fabulous ravines twisting between towering chicanes (known as cahorros) and tipping over spectacular waterfalls into deep plunge pools, all accessible within 15 minutes of the coast. THE WHITE VILLAGES The Pueblos Blancos of Andalusia with their whitewashed walls and red-tiled roofs are justly famous and the Axarquia does not disappoint in this respect. The best known pueblos blancos and the main gateway destinations for walkers are Competa and Frigiliana. West of Competa are some of the region's prettiest villages, the two Canillas (Aceituno and Albaida), Sedella, Salares and Archez. Walk! Costa del Sol (Axarquia) together with Costa del Sol Tour & Trail Map will give you a series of adventures you'll never forget. Each walk is fully described and accompanied by a detailed map and colour photos, plus an information bar that helps you easily choose the right routes for you, based on difficulty, distance, time needed, ascents and descents and more.
