Herridge & Sons Ltd Alvis Speed Models in Detail
A history, description and analysis of the Speed model family of cars made by Alvis Ltd 1932-40. These were and still are among the most desirable high-performance cars of their decade, and with their long, low build they inspired some of the most stylish coachwork of the era. In addition, they pioneered such major motor industry innovations as independent front suspension and an all-synchromesh gearbox. Starting with the Speed 20 of 1932, the author provides a highly detailed technical analysis of each model, covering every aspect of the chassis, running gear, engine and transmission, and going through the SA/SB/SC/SD Speed 20s, the 3 -litre, the Speed 25 and the ultimate expression of the marque, the 4.3. Each receives comprehensive treatment including information on differences from previous models, revisions, the range of bodies available from coachbuilders, performance and behaviour, and appearances in competition. There are also chapters on using the cars today and on the practicalities of ownership, with advice on parts availability, lubricants, maintenance and preservation. Illustrations include specially commissioned colour photography of five outstanding examples, along with archive photographs and Alvis publicity material.

Herridge & Sons Ltd Coachwork on Vintage Bentleys: 3 Litre, 4.5 Litre, 6.5 Litre, Speed Six and 8 Litre, 1921-31
All car enthusiasts know, or think they know, what a vintage Bentley should look like. It should have a four-seater tourer body, and should be painted British Racing Green. But Bentleys weren't always like that. When these cars were new, other types of body by many different coachbuilders - saloons, limousines, fixed-head coupes, landaulets, cabriolets, drophead coupes, sedancas de ville - outnumbered the tourers and sports models. This book uses over 200 contemporary black-and-white illustrations and some 50 specially shot colour photographs to tell the story of Bentley coachwork during the 1920s, and up to 1931 when the company went into receivership. Each of the three classes of coachwork - saloons and limousines, drophead coupes, and tourers - is traced through that exciting decade.

Herridge & Sons Ltd Aston Martin: DB2,DB2/4 and DB3 in Detail 1950-1959
Before World War II Aston Martin had made some stunning sports cars but had undergone numerous financial crises. The company was bought by David Brown in 1947, and in 1950 he launched the all-new DB2 with a brilliant engine designed by W.O. Bentley. The car was a sleek, beautiful and fast two-seater closed coupe of the highest pedigree and led to the highly successful DB3 and DB3S racers, which were entered by the works at Le Mans, Sebring and elsewhere, driven by star drivers from Stirling Moss to Roy Salvadori. All these Aston Martins are examined and analysed in detail here, with specially commissioned colour photography of seven outstanding examples of this rare, expensive and exotic breed of sporting motor car. The author is Librarian of the Vintage Sports Car Club and has written two previous titles in this series as well as the authoritative A-Z of British Coachbuilders. * Fully illustrated: with over 250 colour and black-and-white photographs * Models covered: DB1 1948-50, DB2 1950-53, DB2/4 1953-55, DB2/4 MkII 1955-57, DB2/4 MkIII 1957-59, plus Competition models DB3 1951-53 and DB3S 1953-56

Herridge & Sons Ltd Bentley 3-1/2 and 4-1/4 Litre in Detail 1933-40
A history, description and analysis of the 3 1/2 and 4 1/2 Litre Bentleys built by Rolls-Royce during the 1930s following their surprise takeover of Bentley Motors early in the decade. Promoted as "the silent sports car", these cars proved to be an extraordinary success due to their performance and manners, the excellence of their engineering and construction, the wonderfully attractive coachwork offered on the Bentley chassis, and the association of the Bentley with the illustrious reputation of Rolls-Royce. After outlining the story of Bentley Motors and the Rolls-Royce takeover, the author gives a thoroughgoing account of Rolls-Royce's search for a car with which to relaunch Bentley before the earlier glories began to fade. Then he gives a highly detailed technical analysis of the 3 1/2 Litre, covering every aspect of the chassis, running gear, engine and transmission. This is followed by equivalent coverage of the succeeding 4 1/2 Litre and the short-lived Mark V. Each of these receives comprehensive treatment, including information on differences from previous models, revisions, the range of bodies available from coachbuilders, performance and behaviour, and appearances in competitive events. There are also chapters on using the cars today and on the practicalities of ownership, with advice on parts availability, maintenance and preservation. The 70 colour photographs, some of them specially commissioned, feature outstanding examples of the coachbuilder's art, and are backed up by some 140 images from the archives.

John Wiley and Sons Ltd Ontology and Dialectics: 1960-61
Adorno’s lectures on ontology and dialectics from 1960–61 comprise his most sustained and systematic analysis of Heidegger’s philosophy. They also represent a continuation of a project that he shared with Walter Benjamin – ‘to demolish Heidegger’. Following the publication of the latter’s magnum opus Being and Time, and long before his notorious endorsement of Nazism at Freiburg University, both Adorno and Benjamin had already rejected Heidegger’s fundamental ontology. After his return to Germany from his exile in the United States, Adorno became Heidegger’s principal intellectual adversary, engaging more intensively with his work than with that of any other contemporary philosopher. Adorno regarded Heidegger as an extremely limited thinker and for that reason all the more dangerous. In these lectures, he highlights Heidegger’s increasing fixation with the concept of ontology to show that the doctrine of being can only truly be understood through a process of dialectical thinking. Rather than exploiting overt political denunciation, Adorno deftly highlights the connections between Heidegger’s philosophy and his political views and, in doing so, offers an alternative plea for enlightenment and rationality. These seminal lectures, in which Adorno dissects the thought of one of the most influential twentieth-century philosophers, will appeal to students and scholars in philosophy and critical theory and throughout the humanities and social sciences.
