Skyhorse Publishing A Flyfisher's World
This ample selection of articles and essays by one of America’s most popular writers about fly-fishing begins with a moment on Michigan’s Au Sable River—the exact moment when the author lost his heart to fly-fishing. This collection chronicles a fishing life punctuated by a revealing trip with one of his grown sons and mellow reflections from a hospital bed. This is the broadest of Nick Lyons’s books, with sections on tarpon and pike fishing in the Marquesas and in France, bass bugging on a small Connecticut pond, and trout fishing on unnamed creeks and blue-ribbon western rivers, as well as reflections on such aspects of the sport as the flies that are the underpinning of it all, the pursuit of records, the odd characters he’s met along the way, and the increasing challenge of crowds who pursue this ever-popular sport.By turns canny, hilarious, inquiring, and philosophic, A Flyfisher’s World is an impressive addition to Nick Lyons’s important body of writing about fly-fishing.

Skyhorse Publishing Fishing Dogs: A Guide to the History, Talents, and Training of the Baildale, the Flounderhounder, the Angler Dog, and Sundry Other Breeds of Aquatic Dogs (Canis piscatorius)
If you’re familiar with the world of hunting, you know how important dogs are in the field. Less known, however, is how vital these canines are to fishermen. For many anglers, packing your tackle and wading through the river without a trusted fishing dog is a recipe for disaster. In Fishing Dogs, Raymond Coppinger sheds light on the true value of fishing dogs of every size, shape, and color. Monsoon dogs, for example, lay in the bilge of boats until they are disturbed by the shipping of water. At that point, they rise up out of the bilge and unleash with tremendous power a series of epicentric rotational reciprocations, thus expelling inches of boat-threatening water. Coppinger also introduces readers to the Maine bowplunk dog, which received its name from its deeply ingrained habit of standing, proud and brave, on the bow of his master’s boat as it moves through the choppy waters off Maine’s coast. As a biologist, distinguished fisherman, and a known storyteller and fan of satire, Coppinger is more than qualified to discuss the various breeds of fishing dogs, in addition to topics as the evolution of dogs from wolves, the dangers of crossbreeding, and finding a fisherman’s perfect fishing dog.Skyhorse Publishing is proud to publish a broad range of books for fishermen. Our books for anglers include titles that focus on fly fishing, bait fishing, fly-casting, spin casting, deep sea fishing, and surf fishing. Skyhorse Publishing Painter's Life: Talks, Journals, Paintings
A Painter’s Lifeis a rare glimpse into the mind of an uncompromising painter. Mari Lyons was a life-long “every-day” painter and from an early journal she kept for a short time she reveals the heartbreaks, the pain of rejection, the intense and abiding love of her work, and the quiet triumphs of a painter juggling the demanding life of a mother of four, a busy husband, constant financial pressure; she had a fierce desire to make ever-better work, and for her work to become more visible in the world. Later talks she gave at the Munson William Proctor Institute and Rider University frame the journal entries with the aesthetic concepts that animate her work. This look at her inner life is made more palpable by a selection of more than eighty-five representative paintings in color, along with sketches and photographs. Mari studied with Max Beckmann as a teenager, and later at Bard College, Yale-Norfolk, and with Stanley William Hayter. Her early work received high praise in college and from her first exhibition at the Polari Gallery in Woodstock when she was nineteen and still a student. She married at twenty-one, had three children in as many years, and then moved from the Midwest to New York City, where her fourth child was born.At first influenced by the Abstract Expressionists of the 1950s, she painted non-objectively but soon found the rich thingness of the world irresistible and her work developed into what she called “painterly figuration.” Her journals and notes reveal the intimate details of her long mediation between these two commitments. In time she exhibited regularly at the First Street Gallery in Chelsea and received praise in such places as The Wall Street Journal, The New Republic, The New York Times, The Sun, Forbes FYI, and elsewhere. Today her paintings are in The Museum of the City of New York, The New York State Museum, Bard College, The Montana Historical Society, Mills, Wellesley, and Russell Sage colleges, The Montana Museum of Art, and many other museums and private collections.
