Lund Humphries Publishers Ltd Outside In: Exploring the margins of art
The exclusive global art market is one which few aspiring artists manage to penetrate. How, then, can a creative person with virtually no arts engagement or formal training, perhaps with mental or other significant health issues, disability, or experiencing difficult social circumstances, find a way in? Witnessing the treatment of people in a day centre took author Marc Steene on a journey which led to the establishment of Outside In, a charity championing and promoting the work by artists encountering significant barriers and with the aim of creating a fairer art world. The book shares some of the most inspiring artwork produced outside of the mainstream. It includes work by respected ‘outsider’ artists and other, mostly contemporary, artists that the author has discovered during his work – art rescued from European asylums, the works of Madge Gill, channelled from her spirit guide Myrninerest, Rakibul Chowdhury whose work draws on his fascination with popular culture, and Drew Fox, whose otherworldly creations result from a series of near-death experiences. Exploring the necessity to create by people on the periphery, the unconventional techniques often utilised and the settings in which this work may be produced, Steene provides a compelling case for inclusivity and change.

Climate change is the existential threat of our time, but incredible new advancements in science and engineering can allow us to avoid the worst repercussions of global warming as we work to reverse it over time. The lure of the West has been strong in American history, representing the promise of beautiful, wild landscapes, broad vistas, clean air, and bright skies. Set on this magnificent land are the homes and their interiors-from the 150-year-old Rancho Camulos of Ramona fame to Jack London's Beauty Ranch on the slopes of Sonoma Mountain to the working ranches of today. Ranches: Home on the Range in California presents an expression of a lifestyle steeped in self- sufficiency, love of the land, and unpretentiousness. Arising from the tradition of the Mexican land-grant ranchos and the spread of Spanish Catholic missions, the ranches of California have a long and multifaceted history, which is examined by author Marc Appleton, who himself can attest to the challenges and charms of ranch life. Located in dramatic landscapes of rolling hills, upon the sides of mountains, or in vast plains bordered by snow-capped mountains, the featured homes demonstrate archetypal types-from the Spanish-style hacienda form of historic Rancho Camulos, with its open porch and broad eaves, to the New England clapboard traditional, as seen in Jack London's Beauty Ranch. At once a tribute to a historic form and a fading way of life, as well as a celebration of renewal, architectural beauty, and the romance of the West, this book offers the reader an immersive experience of living on the land.

Quarto Publishing PLC Pauline Boty: British Pop Art's Sole Sister
'How wonderful that one of those exciting and innovative women artists of the 60s should be recovered and celebrated in this way.'– JULIE CHRISTIE'Brings the British pop artist, Pauline Boty, into vivid focus' - VANITY FAIRPauline Boty (1938 –1966) was a founding member of the British Pop Art movement and one of its very few women. She attended London’s Royal College of Art at a watershed moment when its students included David Hockney,Peter Blake, R.B. Kitaj and Allen Jones. Dying tragically young at the age of 28, she is now seen as central to British Pop Art and an icon of Sixties culture. As well as her work as an artist, she appeared on the stage, TV and in film (including alongside Michael Caine in Alfie) and was a regular contributor on BBC radio. She was photographed by David Bailey and other society photographers and became a key player in 1960s London’s golden age.Outspoken, provocative and charismatic, she refused to accept the oppositions between sexual woman and serious artist, between celebration and critique, between high and low culture. Observer and participant, feminist and hedonist, subject and object, Boty’s ‘double vision’ was decades ahead of its time, and prefigured a diversity of artists—everyone from Cindy Sherman to Madonna. Having been largely forgotten after her death, her reputation has been growing steadily since the rediscovery and exhibition of her works in the early 1990s. As well as cropping up regularly in various books, documentaries and newspaper articles since then, she features as a central character in Ali Smith’s novel Autumn (2016) and one of her works sold for $1.4m at auction in June 2022. After seeing her work at an auction in 2013, author Marc Kristal has spent almost ten years researching her life, interviewing the people who knew her and delving into archives and libraries. This is the definitive biography of her life and work, appealing to both those interested in art but in this creative period of British culture.

American Bar Association Fandom and the Law: A Guide to Fan Fiction, Art, Film & Cosplay
Fandom is a cultural phenomenon, embraced by millions of people worldwide, and its expression is the driving force for fan conventions, websites, and other forms of expression. Fandom and the Law is a current and unique resource that looks at the sociology of fandom, as expressed in fan-created content, and how established legal doctrines affect the creation and dissemination of fan fiction, fan art, fan film, and cosplay (costume play). Author Marc H. Greenberg is a law professor who teaches in the areas of entertainment, copyright, and pop culture, and he also represents comic book creators and historians on a diverse array of legal projects. He looks at the four main areas of creative fandom--fan fiction, fan art, fan film, and cosplay, and examines the role of fan content creators within this participatory culture, explaining the meaning of this phrase, the importance of this concept to fan content creators, and the critical element of communities of fandoms. The book next discusses the legal doctrines that affect fan-created works, providing in-depth historical and legal analysis of those aspects of U.S. law whose impact is felt through all fan-created creative works, especially copyright law that is the most relevant to the fan-content creator. This section concludes with a focus on two relevant legislative developments: the PROTECT Act and the CASE Act, the latter of which is currently pending final legislative approval. Next, the book provides a narrow focus on the interaction between the law and the different types of fan-created works with consideration of the specific legal issues regarding each type of content. Further, the book examines the critical role of social media in fandom and fan-created content. This chapter examines the legal issues arising from the huge role social media plays in fandom as this is the primary means by which fan-created content is displayed and distributed. Perhaps more so than in other areas of endeavor, fan-created content, with its inherent tension between fan creators and the original creators of the works that inspire them, turns to the law and the legal system to moderate that tension. The book looks to the future of fan-created content and how legal likely to impact that future, in both positive and negative ways, including how production companies have chosen to respond to fan-created works based on their content in the past and whether those reactions are likely to change in the future. Who can use this book? First and foremost, it is written to meet the needs of attorneys who counsel fan content creators and scholars who are interested in how the law affects this creative process. Yet the book also provides approachable and practical information for fan content creators themselves and the growing number of "acafans" or academics who study pop culture and fandom.

St Martin's Press Waiting for the Punch: Words to Live by from the WTF Podcast
Since 2009, WTF with Marc Maron has been one of the most widely listened to and influential podcasts in the country. Each week over a million and a half listeners tune in to hear Marc and a guest do something remarkable: talk. Described as a “must-listen” by the New York Times, WTF perfects the lost art of conversation while attracting guests as varied and prominent as Amy Schumer, Jerry Seinfeld, and even President Barack Obama. In the course of more than 700 hours of conversation, Marc Maron and his incredible roster of guests have tackled life’s most pressing issues and deepest concerns. Waiting for the Punch is not simply a collection of these interviews, but instead a running narrative of the world’s most recognisable names working through the problems, doubts, joys, triumphs, and failures we all experience. With chapters covering parenting, childhood, relationships, and more, Punch is an everyman’s guide to life. Barack Obama candidly discusses the challenges of the presidency, and the bittersweet moments of seeing your children grow up and away from you. Robin Williams opens up about the burdens of fame and his struggles with addiction. Taken together, these voices form a chorus discussing both life’s biggest questions, and smallest, most intimate moments. Full of stories that are at once laugh-out-loud funny, heart breakingly honest, joyous, tragic and powerful.
