This volume contains a collection of twenty-one essays of John S. Kloppenborg, with four foci: conceptual and methodological issues in the Synoptic Problem; the Sayings Gospel Q; the Gospel of Mark; and the Parables of Jesus. Kloppenborg, a major contributor to the Synoptic Problem, is especially interested in how one constructs synoptic hypotheses, always aware of the many gaps in our knowledge, the presence of competing hypotheses, and the theological and historical entailments in any given hypothesis. Common to the essays in the remaining three sections is the insistence that the literature, thought and practices of the early Jesus movement must be treated with a deep awareness of their social, literary, and intellectual contexts. The context of the early Jesus movement is illumined not simply by resort to the literary and historical sources produced by Greek and Roman elites but, more importantly, by data gathered from documentary sources available in non-literary papyri.

Over the past decades, biblical scholars have gradually become more aware of the importance of the social sciences for their own field. This has produced a steady flow of studies informed by work that was done in the fields of group formation psychology, the sociology of emerging movements and the sociology of religion, and historical anthropology. This volume offers the proceedings of a conference that brought together a number of expert biblical scholars, specialists of ancient religious practices, and proponents of an anthropological approach to ancient Christian and Greco-Roman religious tradition. It was the explicit purpose not to focus exclusively on purely methodological reflections, but to explore and evaluate how methodological concepts and constructs can be developed and then also checked in applying them on specific cases and topics that are typical for understanding earliest Christianity.

This volume contains the acts of the international conference on the Synoptic Problem that was organised at Lincoln College, Oxford, in April 2008. The conference focused on offering a comprehensive assessment of the state of research into the Synoptic Problem over the last hundred years, indicating potential ways in which the discussion might be advanced. In more than thirty essays contributors have dealt with various aspects of the question, including the current state of synoptic studies in general, a comparative assessment of the major synoptic hypotheses, the synoptic gospels and ancient scribal practices, the role and function of hypothetical sources, the synoptic gospels and other gospels, and the reception history of the research. This volume marks the centenary of the publication of the Studies in the Synoptic Problem by Members of the University of Oxford, the results of William Sanday's 'Seminar' that had ran for some fifteen years. But primarily it honours a distinguished contributor to current scholarship on the Synoptic Problem, Christopher M. Tuckett, Professor of New Testament studies at the University of Oxford and a Fellow of Pembroke College.

The Sayings Gospel Q in Greek and English with Parallels from the Gospels of Mark and Thomas is the outcome of a generation's work by the International Q Project, in reconstructing the collection of sayings ascribed to Jesus (and some to John) that lies behind the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. It thus makes available in a convenient form the most important source for reconstructing the message of Jesus' original Galilean followers, as they proclaimed anew after his death his message of God's reign. Q is, as a result, the most important single source for the study of the historical Jesus.
