DOM Publishers Architecture in Archives: The Collection of the Akademie der Künste
The Akademie der Künste (Academy of Arts) in Berlin has carried out its task of promoting the arts in Germany since the year it was founded in 1696. From the outset, master builders have been eligible to become members. The architect Hans Scharoun laid the groundwork for establishing the architectural archive. As the first post-war president of the academy in West Berlin, he was eager to document twentieth-century architecture in the Archive. Besides the story lying behind the assembly of a collection, this publication presents all seventy-one archives and eighty collections, including short biographies of the originators and the nature and scope of inventories. The Preußische Akademie (Prussian Academy) is represented among other things by drawings by Friedrich Gilly from the end of the eighteenth century. Expressionist designs by Bruno Taut, Alfons Anker, Paul Goesch and Adolf Behne in particular are to be found in rich abundance. In common with the archives of Richard Ermisch, Paul Baumgarten and Thilo Schoder, these offer a chronicle of the 1920s. One focus of the collection is devoted to the archives of Second World War émigré architects, among them Adolf Rading, Gabriel Epstein, Julius Posenerand Konrad Wachsmann. The post-war period and the booming 1960s are represented by the archives of Hermann Henselmann, Walter Rossow, Bernhard Hermkes, Werner Hebebrand, Werner Düttmann and Heinz Graffunder. Archives and collections which can be traced back beyond the turn of the twenty-first century emerged from Jörg Schlaich, Kurt Ackermann, Szyszkowitz + Kowalski and Valentien + Valentien. On offer for the first time is an overview in print form of these archives acquired by the Academy up to the present day – archives of architects, engineers, landscape architects and architectural photographers and critics alike. This publication presents an excerpt from around half a million documents.

Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht GmbH & Co KG Kulturinsel und Machtinstrument: Die Akademie der Künste, die Partei und die Staatssicherheit
The history of the East Berlin Academy of Arts (1950--1993) is a hallmark for quarrels between mind and power. The protagonists on behalf of the Academy were renowned writers, directors, actors, visual artists and musicians. Leading members of the Socialist Party and government, especially top officials from the cultural department and less kown members of the state security service were opposed to this faction. How much say did the regime allow the members of the Acadamy? How did the united artist elite use their political freedom? Matthias Braun is the first to examine extensively the possible influence of the SED and MfS on the Academy of Arts.

ArchiTangle GmbH urbainable/stadthaltig - Positions on the European City for the 21st Century
Constant change is what marks the history of the European city. Over centuries, architecture's reactions to social disruptions-natural disaster, plague, or war-have fashioned the city into an engine of civilization. And bound up with this has been the promise of economic independence, social cohesion, and individual freedom. Now fundamental challenges, such as climate change, are bringing cities face to face with new transformations that call into question the continuity and sustainability of the ethical foundations underpinning urban ways of life. Bold and decisive steps are needed. How far can urban planning, landscape planning, and architecture foster the vital processes of change? How can the city offset possible losses caused by altered lifestyles, integrate new technologies, or rehearse new forms of behaviour and ultimately sublimate them into a functioning culture? In this volume, the members of the Architecture Section of the Akademie der Kunste Berlin and their invited guests from all over Europe introduce their positions by means of projects, visions, and manifestos. Essays by selected authors with different viewpoints supplement the practical discourse. Published by Tim Rieniets, Matthias Sauerbruch, and Joern Walter on behalf of the Akademie der Kunste, Berlin. With a photoessay by Erik-Jan Ouwerkerk.

Park Books Hans Scharoun and the Development of Small Apartment Floor Plans: The Residential High-Rises Romeo and Julia, 1954-1959
Romeo and Julia, two residential high-rises in Stuttgart, built 1954-59 and designed by Hans Scharoun (1893-1972), constitute the most original and far-reaching of the various attempts to re-design the entire 'process of living' that this extraordinary protagonist of Germany's modern architecture undertook. Over decades, Scharoun had woven an extensive network of research and knowledge systems as a basis for his floor-plan designs. His unpublished writings and, even more importantly, his lectures from between 1947 and 1958 reveal the countless threads of research and discourse, which his work in residential architecture referenced and absorbed. They highlight the sometimes contradictory, yet constant renewal and consolidation of his knowledge in the field of housing. This new book, based on extensive research in collaboration with Berlin's Akademie der Kunste, demonstrates how closely interlocked Romeo and Julia are with their architect's immense engagement with the topic of housing. Drawing on previously unpublished archive material held at the Akademie der Kunste, the authors for the first time allow the reader an insight into Scharoun's design process. Alongside reproductions of original plans and drawings, the book features excerpts from Scharoun's unpublished text fragments. New images by Swiss architectural photographer Georg Aerni, illustrating the two towers' highly expressive appearance, round out this volume.

Birkhauser Hans Scharoun: Buildings and Projects
Hans Scharoun is one of the most important architects of the 20th century; as a proponent of organic architecture, he created unconventional and imaginative buildings which adapt to users’ needs in a dynamic way. His oeuvre includes family residences and housing estates but also encompasses the German embassy in Brazil, and urban icons such as the Berlin Philharmonie. The book, a cooperation with Baukunstarchiv (the architecture archive) of the Akademie der Künste, Berlin, documents the entire range of known completed buildings by Scharoun, including, for the first time, early works in East Prussia. The specially taken photographs by Carsten Krohn, together with the historic photographs and plans from the Hans-Scharoun-Archive offer a new overview of this expressive organic architecture.

De Gruyter HANS SCHAROUN. Architektur auf Papier
The built work of Hans Scharoun (1893 1972) has already been honored many times, but his sensational drawings with utopian contents have only been considered cursorily and his pioneering drawings as a pupil and student have not been a focus at all. Over 1,000 free sketches and drawings by Scharoun that are not connected with concrete building projects and were produced between 1909 his time at school in Bremerhaven and the end of the Second World War take center stage. Analyses of new sources now facilitate a first overall classification of his visions put down on paper. The publication honors the work of the architect, who was the first postwar president of the West-Berlin Akademie der Künste, in the fiftieth anniversary of his death.

Park Books Demo:Polis – The Right to Public Space
DEMO:POLIS is a sociological and urbanist research undertaking comprehensively examining what 'public space' means today. After two decades of appropriation of the internet's anonymous, virtual public space, people are once again taking to streets and squares for their concern. Public space today is no longer merely a large square in the heart of town: it is traffic hub, advertising medium, multi-functional space, or simply a place to hang out. It can be a combat zone for various interest groups at one time and a place for individual self-projection and collective experience at another, but also a strong manifestation of social segregation and neglect. The DEMO:POLIS project has resulted in this new book. It features a vast range of exemplary public spaces and presents controversial artistic and urban design interventions that demonstrate protests against and criticisms of the status quo. Richly illustrated, it also presents various artistic and scientific approaches and working principles, offering manifold design options for the public space. The book is published to coincide with an exhibition at Berlin's Akademie der Kunste in spring 2016.
