*36:00:00* The clock activates so suddenly in my mind, my head involuntarily jerks a bit to the side. The fog vanishes, dissipated in an instant as though it never was. Memories come slotting into place, their edges sharp enough to leave furrows, and suddenly I know. I know exactly who I am. My name is Lia Johansen, and I was named for a prisoner of war. She lived in the Tiersten Internment Colony for two years, and when they negotiated the return of the prisoners, I was given her memories and sent back in her place. And I am a genetically engineered human bomb. Lia Johansen was created for only one purpose: to slip onto the strategically placed New Sol Space Station and explode. But her mission goes to hell when her clock malfunctions, freezing her countdown with just two minutes to go. With no Plan B, no memories of her past, and no identity besides a name stolen from a dead POW, Lia has no idea what to do next. Her life gets even more complicated when she meets Michael Sorenson, the real Lia’s childhood best friend. Drawn to Michael and his family against her better judgment, Lia starts learning what it means to live and love, and to be human. It is only when her countdown clock begins sporadically losing time that she realizes even duds can still blow up. If she wants any chance at a future, she must find a way to unlock the secrets of her past and stop her clock. But as Lia digs into her origins, she begins to suspect there’s far more to her mission and to this war, than meets the eye. With the fate of not just a space station but an entire empire hanging in the balance, Lia races to find the truth before her time—literally—runs out.

Thirty years since we last met him and Lucille in the Garden of Remembrance, Phil McCann faces the New Millennium with fortitude and good humour. The leading arts correspondent of the day is on her way to the far north to record a radio profile, which Paul is confident will relaunch his career as a painter and establish him once and for all as a colossus of contemporary Caledonian culture. There are, however, a number of stumbling blocks on the road to Phil's rediscovery and the recognition of his genius, not least of which is his rocky marriage to much younger Didi, a video artist of some renown, who has just been nominated for the Turner Prize. Then there's the old pal, Spanky, who turns up out of the blue with new bride, Lucille, on his arm...Nova Scotia premiered at the Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh, in April 2008.

It is some time after Ed Chianese's trip into the Kefahuchi Tract. A major industry of the Halo is now tourism. The Tract has begun to expand and change, but, more problematically, parts of it have also begun to fall to earth, piecemeal, on the Beach planets. We are in a city, perhaps on New Venusport or Motel Splendido: next to the city is the event site, the zone, from out of which pour new, inexplicable artefacts, organisms and escapes of living algorithm - the wrong physics loose in the universe. They can cause plague and change. An entire department of the local police, Site Crime, exists to stop them being imported into the city by adventurers, entradistas, and the men known as 'travel agents', profiteers who can manage - or think they can manage - the bad physics, skewed geographies and psychic onslaughts of the event site. But now a new class of semi-biological artefact is finding its way out of the site, and this may be more than anyone can handle.

Louise Gluck's collection is a work of ends and beginnings. Her poetry comes in white-hot sequences of passionate intensity. "Vita Nova" is a sequence of poems which dramatises the end of a relationship and the beginning of a new life. Vibrant, at times anguished, but never resigned, the voices in this collection are a reminder of both the pleasure and pain which accompany all our relationships. Gluck manages an act of perspective that brings into resolution the smallest human Hope and the vast forces that shape and thwart it.

Vita nova

Pegasus Books Terra Nova: A Novel
A haunting story of love, art, and betrayal, set against the heart-pounding backdrop of Antarctic exploration—from the Boston Globe-bestselling author of The Clover House. The year is 1910, and two Antarctic explorers, Watts and Heywoud, are racing to the South Pole. Back in London, Viola, a photo-journalist, harbors love for them both. In Terra Nova, Henriette Lazaridis seamlessly ushers the reader back and forth between the austere, forbidding, yet intoxicating polar landscape of Antarctica to the bustle of early twentieth century London. Though anxious for both men, Viola has little time to pine. She is photographing hunger strikers in the suffrage movement, capturing the female nude in challenging and politically powerful ways. As she comes into her own as an artist, she's eager for recognition and to fulfill her ambitions. And then the men return, eager to share news of their triumph. But in her darkroom, Viola discovers a lie. Watts and Heywoud have doctored their photos of the Pole to fake their success. Viola must now decide whether to betray her husband and her lover, or keep their secret and use their fame to help her pursue her artistic ambitions. Rich and moving, Terra Nova is a novel that challenges us to consider how love and lies, adventure and art, can intersect.

Batsford Ltd Nova 1965–1975
A reissue of a cult design book about Nova, the groundbreaking British magazine of the 60s and 70s, with a new introduction. Nova 1965–1975 celebrates one of the most influential magazines in history. Known as ‘the thinking woman’s magazine’ Nova was a British publication that set itself apart from its contemporaries by creating a magazine that was not just about fashion but was also politically, socially and sexually aware. The magazine covered issues that were controversial at the time, such as abortion, racism, gay rights and The Pill, and featured writers such as Susan Sontag, Harold Pinter, Elizabeth David, Prue Leith, William Trevor, Christopher Booker and Graham Greene. The book is compiled by David Hillman and Harri Peccinotti, who worked as Art Directors on the magazine. The design and layout of the magazine were as groundbreaking as the content, and borrowed ideas from the psychedelic subculture and underground press of the day. Nova was one of the first magazines to include black models in their photoshoots, and regular photographers for the magazine included Helmut Newton, Guy Bourdin, Terence Donovan, Don McCullin, Bob Richards and Diane Arbus. The book selects the best covers and articles from the magazine’s decade-long output and looks at them in detail, featuring many of the iconic magazine covers.
