The suburban, detached single-family home is a major legacy of the Fordist decades of the twentieth century. In 2011, two-thirds of German households occupied such single-family houses. These buildings have embodied the political support for a way of life and type of living arrangement since the 1950s, and continue to symbolise dreams of home, prosperity, and social status. West German suburbs today consist mainly of single-family homes built between the fifties and eighties. However, municipal administrations and politics at the local level are now faced with the emptying of single-family housing areas at the edges of villages and small towns. At the same time, young families in particular are calling for building plots in the countryside. Whilst remaining aware of critiques of the single-family home in urban planning and architecture, this interdisciplinary volume offers fresh insights into these dwellings - from their place in everyday life and popular culture, to changing welfare regimes and demographic change, and to the implementation of ecological frameworks in the construction industry.

All around the world, new city districts are being realized that draw on historical typologies and form languages. In inner cities, new buildings in a historical style are increasingly replacing established existing buildings, in order to bring back long-lost historical ensembles or sought-after images. The phenomenon of retro districts is complex, with different motivations, constellations of involved parties and forms of expression. Apart from the reconstruction of lost buildings, historical structures are simply copied and placed in a completely new spatial and socio-cultural context. This publication examines the phenomenon of historicizing construction, based on 14 international case studies, including the Dom-Römer area in Frankfurt, the Elbing old town in Poland, Hallstatt in China, Poundbury in England, or the Old Town in Dubai. How can an urban community revitalise dormant empty spaces in the long term? Since 2009, the ZwischenZeitZentrale (ZZZ) in Bremen has been opening windows of opportunity. They explore experimental space usage through short-term collaborations that serve as trial runs for the development of longer-term projects. Hamburg’s early starting point for a higher education of the built environment professionals was the initiation of a building and engineering drawing class (Bauzeichenklasse). Brought to life back in May 1767, for the following 250 years the organization and academic professionalization of the built environment education in Hamburg has undertaken a long and sometimes winding road through several organizations, times, policies. The concept of the urban parterre plays a central role in considering what makes a city liveable. The urban parterre is the zone of the city at eye level: the urban ground floor. It is a fabric composed of the built and unbuilt spaces in which we move and interact every day. While urban research has previously tended to focus on either the ground floor level or public spaces, this book considers the systemic interplay of ground floor, inner courtyards, streets, and their interfaces. Using Urban Parterre Modelling to carry out a comprehensive analysis of architectural structures dating from the late nineteenth century (the Gründerzeit), the hidden challenges and opportunities posed by these buildings are explored and discussed with reference to the sustainable, resilient, and circular future use of existing architecture. The built heritage of postwar modernism has been under threat from climate change and the high expectations of society for years. The tremendous volume of building stock was erected with high hopes for the future within just a short period of time—and frequently using construction techniques that were as yet unproven. Despite the many research efforts focusing on spatial concepts and societal utopias between the 1950s and 1970s, the practice-oriented field of construction research lacks binding recording and evaluation strategies for buildings, materials, and construction methods for the majority of buildings of all types. This affects projects from solitary churches, residential settlements, and green spaces right through to large cultural, sporting, and education constructions, as well as the engineering structures of the urban and peripheral infrastructure.In order to preserve this existing stock as a resource for the future, new recording and evaluation tools that take into account technical, construction, ecological, and economic factors are necessary. This book presents possibilities for the management of our recent constructed heritage on the basis of ongoing projects by the DFG-Netzwerk Bauforschung Jungere Baubestande 1945+ buildings preservation network.

The inter- and transdisciplinary research project Drei Zimmer, Küche, Diele, Bad used a vacant home to formulate and consider questions about the future of housing. The residence, a listed building ensemble in Weimar dating from the 1920s, initially served as a work, discussion, and exhibition space for students of architecture and urbanism. A small number of significant interventions transformed it into a space that enabled not just alternative dwelling options, but also neighborhood-focused activities. The new residents were selected through a concept proposal process, and the researchers analyzed their usage of the dwelling over the course of two years. Lasting five years in total (2017–2021), the project began as a cooperation between the Bauhaus-Universitat Weimar, the Thuringer Aufbaubank funding and development agency, and the Weimarer Wohnstatte municipal housing company under the aegis of the Thuringian Ministry for Infrastructure and Agriculture.

After the Schlehdorf monastery became too big for the aging Dominican sisters, they collectively decided to sell the building and move into a newly built extension. Artist Jutta Görlich, photographer Ulrike Myrzik, and cultural manager Ulrike Rose visited the Schlehdorf sisters and other female convents gripped by the process of change. In the book, they explore the present-day disappearance of these convents, photograph the transformations the institutions are undergoing, and carry out interviews with those who live there. The book not only reveals the paths that these shrinking communities chart when their dwellings become too large, but also what happens to the former monastery and the significance that spatial change can have for monastic coexistence. Without romanticizing its subject or focusing on monastic traditions, the book looks at contemporary ways of life in convents and the future of these centuries-old landmarks that continue to decisively shape our cultural landscape.

Le Corbusier’s Unité d’habitation "Typ Berlin"—built 1957–58—is an exceptional testimony to Berlin’s post-war architecture. Although it follows the basic concept of a "vertical village" as envisioned by the architect, the gigantic block, containing 530 apartments, clearly differs from the Marseille original. However, as a result of modifications required by the client, the construction occupies the position of an outsider in Le Corbusier’s oeuvre. Authors from the fields of architecture, urbanism, art history, and cultural studies precisely set out the genesis of the listed building for the first time. In addition, they investigate the development of the "Unité d’habitation" model, the Berlin variant’s unique color concept, and carry out a comparison with the four typologically related buildings in France. In looking at the significance, ingenuity, and creative impact of Le Corbusier’s unique creation in Berlin, the so-called "Corbusierhaus," the publication fills a gap in the literature on post-war modernism and the architect’s body of work.

"The Shanghai Oriental Sports Center (SOSC) has emerged as a model project of German architecture and engineering skill" is the verdict of the renowned architecture journalist Dirk Meyhöfer in his architectural critique of the Shanghai Oriental Sports Center. Inaugurated in 2011 on the occasion of the FINA World Swimming Championships, the site brings together the SOSC swimming facilities, a multipurpose venue, and a press centre, whose forms and materials harmonise as an ensemble. From an urban development perspective, its park grounds merge with their surroundings. The reclaiming of open spaces in cities has become a political issue that reflects quite different views and ways of dealing with this development. 25 landscape architects based in Germany, as well as an architect, outline in a prescribed form their ideal vision of an urban garden: their favourite garden. Kamel Louafi asks the contributors about their approaches and visions, their way of working, as well as about issues such as sustainability and urban gardening.
