Between 1960 and 1965 Gio Ponti worked on the headquarters of the religious congregation Notre Dame de Sion, located on the Janiculum Hill in Rome. His contribution to the project has been unidentified until recently. In 2014, the building was converted to house the Catholic University of America and the Australian Catholic University. This occasion gave architects of AeV Architetti the opportunity to carry out historical and archival research on the original project, the results of which are presented here. Eliseo Mattiacci (Cagli, 1940) is considered a leading figure in modern and contemporary Italian art. Afro Libio Basaldella (Udine, 1912-Zurich, 1976) was perhaps the most renowned member of the Friuli Avant-garde Movement, which influenced his approach towards a more Expressionist sense of painting that had always been based on traditional Venetian Colourism. In the 1940s, Afro joined the Fronte Nuovo delle Arti, and following a visit to the United States, he joined the Gruppo degli Otto, with whom he exhibited at the Venice Biennale in 1952. Although in certain aspects his style seemed similar to American Action Painting, his harmonious tonal modulation and later research into abstract shapes and forms produced intellectually sophisticated results. This is the catalogue of the first French retrospective of the artist, held at the Tornabuoni Art Gallery in Paris, showing works ranging from the 1930s to the 1970.

Catalogue of the exhibition dedicated by La Galleria Nazionale di Roma to Vasco Bendini on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his birth, which opened in March 2022. The volume accompanies the discovery of the career of one of the major artists of the second half of the Italian 20th century, from his early training with Giorgio Morandi, up to the great Roman solo exhibitions and the Biennales of his maturity. The work of Vasco Bendini, dear to critics such as Francesco Arcangeli and Maurizio Calvesi, opens in the immediate postwar period, following an informal language in search of the volto as a universal archetype, to then focus on gesture and matter, under the influence of, among others, Jean Fautrier. Beautiful Lies documents Teheran-born, New York-based artist Ali Banisadr’s 2021 show in Florence in honour of the 700th anniversary of the death of Dante Alighieri. The “beautiful lies” beneath which truth is hidden is an expression used by Dante in describing his writing - and allegorical poetry in general - and it is perfectly suited to Banisadr’s work. His powerful brushwork and strong colours go below the surface of his personal reality, revealing violence and isolation, anguish and wonder, but also memories and imagination. For this show, which was split between two venues, he was commissioned to create an installation of site-specific paintings (also called Beautiful Lies). Florence is not a static city. It has often been guilty of long delays and a certain lack of courage in assimilating new approaches, but its way of introducing contemporary architecture into a consolidated context, is unique. Changes with great impact began in Florence at the end of the 19th century with the urban planning transformations designed by Giuseppe Poggi. The strongly defined limits of the historic centre became blurred with the demolition of the fortifications and the city was opened up to permit expansion. From Burri's combustions to Klein's, Arman's and Kounellis's use of gas flame, as well as Calzolari's and Parmiggiani's use of flames and smoke in different ways, the artists have explored both the destructive and generative effects of fire, using different materials, as well as ash and light, creating an innovative form of expression. The exhibition includes works on international loan from the most prestigious public and private collections in Europe and North America, offering thus the opportunity to see some masterpieces that have never or rarely been seen before.

Gender Gap, curated by Laura Andreini, documents an exhibition of projects and maquettes by 20 international female architects. Between 1970 and 1971, Italian artists Paolo Scheggi and Vincenzo Agnetti worked together on a project they called The Temple. Birth of Eidos. Due to Scheggi’s untimely death in 1971 at the age of 31, the project remained unfinished. These previously unpublished preparatory sketches, drawings, and notes, which were shown at the Museo Novecento in Florence, are examined in essays by Ilaria Bignotti and Bruno Corà and texts by Germana Agnetti and Cosima Scheggi, daughters of the two artists and directors of their respective archives. The concept of the project was to create a sacred place, a temple, to contain linguistic objects representing primary forms of community, subjectivity and power, linking these with the artistic and theoretical research the two artists were conducting at the time. Agnetti died 10 years after his friend and colleague. His research followed a new route but remained closely linked with that idea born in 1968, that “any work, any artistic object, any gesture is a critical reminder of reality and our existence”. The Green Energy Laboratory (GEL) is a research centre for low environmental impact building technologies on the the Minhang Campus of Jiao Tong University in Shanghai. Created in collaboration between the university and the Italian Ministry for Environment, Land and Sea Protection, it was designed and built by the Florentine architectural firm Archea Associati in 2012. This book features critical essays, technical drawings, photos of the construction site and the completed project, and illustrates the harmony of this structure through its perfect blend of tradition, architectural ingenuity, and sustainability. The GEL building is based around a central courtyard with a retractable roof. The top, or third floor, is recessed in relation to the main block, with a steeply sloped roof to house solar panels. The outer shell of the building’s double skin is composed of terracotta elements designed to form pictograms common in the Chinese language. This landmark project represents a symbol of intercultural cooperation between Italy and China. Text in English and Italian.

Tornabuoni art returns to the origins of sculptor Arnaldo Pomodoro's work (1926, Morciano di Romagna), specifically to the years 1956-1965, a pivotal period of the artist's production. His creations, initially derived from the goldsmithing produced side by side with the brothers Gio and Giorgio Perfetti, evolves towards small concrete and lead reliefs, then in large mural panels engraved with illegible glyphs, inspired by Mesopotamian tablets' cuneiform writing, Egyptian papyruses and Paul Klee's graphic style. In 1960, Pomodoro was among the founders of the group Continuità, next to Novelli, Consagra, Tancredi, Dorazio and Fontana, preaching an 'aesthetic of continuity', defined as 'the absence, the incertitude of limit' and attached to the formal aspects of artworks. He thus produced his first Sfere, adopting gilded polished bronze as his preferred material of work, and of which the creation marks the definitive transition to monumental scale of his career. Today, Pomodoro's creations can be found in prestigious museum collections such as the Guggenheim in New York and the Vatican Museums. Moreover, his monumental artworks are exhibited in more than 40 public squares in major cities around the world. The artist lives and works in Milan, Italy. Text in English and Italian.

Founder of Superstudio and initiator of the so-called 'Radical Architecture' movement (one of the most important avant-garde movements of the sixties and seventies), Adolfo Natalini describes years of designed and constructed architectural projects through his preferred media: drawings and sketches shown in his Black notebooks (Quaderni Neri). This book contains many of his numerous designs and constructed projects, witness to almost fifty years of his career, collected in four new Notebooks. The first section describes the experiences shaping Natalini's education, including his studies and work at Superstudio and the 'Pistioia school'. The other chapters present his designs and completed projects, divided by geographic area and then in chronological order. The Italian, German and Dutch sketchbooks show the work he considers the best representations of his career, told through images, technical drawings and original sketches from his famed sketchbooks. Many excerpts from interviews with the Natalini are interspersed throughout, complementing and tying everything together. Renato Mambor, an Italian painter, photographer, and performing artist, was a member of the 1960's Scuola di Piazza del Popolo group in Rome, together with Mario Schifano, Pino Pascali, and Jannis Kounellis. This book documents a retrospective exhibition of his career, which brings together thirty works created between the 1960s and 2013. Mambor played a major role in the return to a form of figuration, also becoming a celebrated performer, theatre director and stage designer. The book includes a wide selection of archival images and texts by the artist, and highlights his creative process in a number of mediums, from painting to performance. This book starts from the Lucio Fontana exhibition, curated by Enrico Crispolti, that was held from 1 October until 30 November 2009, at Tornabuoni Art Gallery, Paris. The same exhibition is presented again in Arezzo, as 'Lucio Fontana - Hic et Nunc', from 6 May until 24 June 2018 at the Municipal Gallery of Contemporary Art, for which this book acts as the catalogue. The volume explores, through a selection of approximately seventy works, including sculptures and paintings, the Master's artistic activity from the 1950s onwards. The critical essays by Enrico Crispolti enrich the text by providing some important insights into the life of Lucio Fontana, his visits to Paris and Milan, during which he continued to have an extensive range of exchanges with artists, architects and intellectuals of his time. Vintage photographs, direct quotations from the artist, and a thorough biography contextualise the art of Fontana in the specific cultural climate in which he lived and help to better understand the evolutionary spirit of this person who, until his death, was driven by a constant creative tension.
