My brother John Larmour was a police officer in the Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC). On October 11th 1988 he was off duty and looking after my family-run ice cream parlour, Barnam's World of Ice Cream. I was on holiday in Spain with my wife and two young daughters at the time. John was shot dead that night by the IRA. A teenage couple were also in the parlour. The gunmen callously opened fire on them too. One of the guns they used had been taken from a murdered soldier. The other was a police issue pistol that had been used in other killings. My brother's brutal murder has been gently immortalised in a poem 'The Ice Cream Man' by award winning poet, Michael Longley. His thoughtful words brought a degree of comfort to my Mum and Dad who died of broken hearts. My brother, like all police officers, lived with constant danger. He knew that. But he couldn't have known the complexity of the story that would unfold after his death. My search for the truth behind John's murder started on that fateful night in October 1988. Wrangling with the police and the 'cold case' Historical Enquiries Team, raised suspicions, not lightly dispelled, of collusion. The more I learned the more I came to suspect that recruiting and protecting an agent, a 'Supertout' inside the upper echelons of the IRA was more important to some of John's police colleagues than catching his killers. This is my story.

This is a new edition of Dr EM Patterson's first volume on the history of the narrow-gauge railways of North-West Ireland, originally published in 1962. The County Donegal Railways had a route of 124 miles, five termini and three junction stations. For the most part they traversed hilly and thinly-populated country and for two generations they were a busy and efficient operation. This edition adds a valuable chapter of interviews and memories of some of the surviving workers and others who had contact with the railway. It also includes a chapter on the County Donegal Railway today (as over 50 years after closure, much can still be seen of the former network), and some additional Glover drawings of locomotive, carriage and wagon stock.

At the height of its existence, the Fishguard & Rosslare Railways & Harbours Company owned a total of 104 miles of track in Ireland as well as just short of a mile of line at Fishguard Harbour. The Company is now jointly owned by Irish Rail and Stena and board meetings are still held once a year, attended by representatives of both organizations. When the author began his research into the history of this Company, he was of the view that there would be little to record, bearing in mind the comparatively short mileage and the fact that the Company has only been in existence for a little over 100 years, but as time has gone by it has become patently obvious that the history of the F&RR&H is a complicated one, full of interest and, at times, intrigue. To do full justice to the story, it has been found necessary to broaden the research beyond the actual Fishguard Company. For example, on the Irish side it has been necessary to begin the story with Brunel s original schemes for railways connecting Dublin with Waterford and the latter city with Cork.On the Welsh side, the original South Wales Railway played an important part in the story, as did the line from Clynderwen through the Preseli Mountains to Fishguard.Many years of research by author Ernie Shepherd have produced this first history of the Company including some 80 plus images, most previously unpublished."
