This book highlights the connection between Damien Hirst (born 1965) and the British modernist artist Margaret Mellis (1914–2009), who became a close friend and mentor to the YBA protagonist during the development of his early career. In the 1980s Hirst made regular visits to Mellis' home and studio in Southwold, on the North Sea coast of England, where he spent much time studying her beautiful drawings of "half-dead flowers" on envelopes and driftwood assemblages fashioned from her beachcombing forays. In 2001 Hirst expressed the view that she had been unjustly neglected and deserved to be "up there—large on the map with her contemporaries"; their works were first exhibited side by side at the Tate in 2008. Alongside reproductions of assemblages and drawings by Mellis and Hirst, this volume includes a reproduction of a letter written to Hirst by Mellis from c. 1987, and an essay on Mellis by Hirst.

Melly opens with an account of the generation of urban men who came of age on the heels of the era of structural adjustment, a diverse cohort with great dreams of building, moving, and belonging, but frustratingly few opportunities for doing so. From there, she moves to a close study of taxi drivers and state workers, and shows how bottlenecks physical and institutional affect both. The third section of the book covers a seemingly stalled state effort to solve housing problems by building large numbers of concrete houses, while the fourth takes up the thousands of migrants who annually attempt, often with tragic results, to cross the Mediterranean on rickety boats in search of new opportunities. The resulting book offers a remarkable portrait of contemporary Senegal, the constraints and hopes of its urban citizens, and a means of theorizing mobility and its impossibilities far beyond the African continent.

The Mellah Society is a compact yet detailed and fascinating account of Jewish life in precolonial Morocco, based on the voluminous but rarely studied writings of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Judeo-Moroccan sages. Shlomo Deshen, author of several books on North African Jewish immigrants to Israel, here turns his attention to the past. Taking as his focus the tension between individualism and communal authority—symbolized by the walls of the mellahs, the Jewish quarters—he applies to traditional Moroccan Jewish society questions of concern to sociologists everywhere regarding political organization, economic activity, religion, and the family. From such documents as private correspondence, archival photographs, and the legal commentaries of rabbis who served in the Jewish community courts, Deshen draws out details of daily life: disputes between spouses, businessmen, craftsmen, and inheritors; the ramifications of marriage contracts; and claims involving community taxes and extortions by Muslim potentates. Linking this material with recent historical and anthropological studies of the Maghreb, Deshen reconstructs a community about which little has been known and places it squarely within the context of traditional Moroccan society. Individual chapters deal with relations between Muslims and Jews, the material conditions of Jewish life, and the nature of politics within the mellah.
