From the New York Times bestselling author of Black Man in a White Coat comes a powerful and urgent call to center psychiatry and mental health care into the mainstream of medicineAs much as we all might wish that mental health problems, with their elusive causes and unsettling behaviors, simply did not exist, millions of people suffer from them, sometimes to an extreme extent. Many others face addiction to alcohol and other drugs, as overdose and suicide deaths abound. Yet the vast majority of doctors receive minimal instruction in treating these conditions during their lengthy medical training. This mismatch ignores the clear overlap between physical and mental distress, and too-often puts psychiatrists on the outside looking in as the medical system continues to fail many patients. In Facing The Unseen, bestselling author, professor of psychiatry, and practicing physician Damon Tweedy guides us through his days working in outpatient cl

Ronin Publishing The Steersman: Metabeliefs and Self-Navigation
In this intellectually bracing work, John C. Lilly, whose groundbreaking research inspired Day of the Dolphins and Altered States, likens humans to biochemical robots without an operating manual. By learning to program the robot, he argues, humans gain spiritual independence. Knowing one’s core beliefs and understanding how they direct one’s actions are critical steps towards such independence. But for many people, spiritual beliefs are like clothes, put on and taken off for various occasions and like clothes, become a kind of confining uniform, rendering one person virtually identical to the next. In The Steersman, Lilly shows readers how to identify their guiding beliefs and, most importantly, how to change them in ways that they choose, making it possible to break out of the confines of beliefs accepted without consideration and navigate a new path of self-discovery.

It is easy to turn a blind eye. Schiffer Publishing Ltd Nutrition Health and Disease
Dr. Todd demonstrates first that our diet is not only deficient and why, but that it cannot be made adequate without supplementation. He explains the concept of free radical pathology in simple, understandable terms, and shows how elevated blood cholesterol is the result of the body's attempt to neutralize the destructive free radicals. Cholesterol is a friend, rather than an enemy, and selected vitamins and minerals effectively neutralize free radicals and thus allow cholesterol levels to drop. There is no reason, Dr. Todd concludes, that our normal life span shouldn't be about 120 years. Concisely written, this book is aimed squarely at the people who are increasingly concerned about their health, and accept responsibility for their own destiny. It is without a doubt the best book on health and nutrition ever written for a growing health-conscious population.

University of California Press Blind Spot: How Neoliberalism Infiltrated Global Health
Neoliberalism has been the defining paradigm in global health since the latter part of the twentieth century. What started as an untested and unproven theory that the creation of unfettered markets would give rise to political democracy led to policies that promoted the belief that private markets were the optimal agents for the distribution of social goods, including health care. A vivid illustration of the infiltration of neoliberal ideology into the design and implementation of development programs, this case study, set in post-Soviet Tajikistan's remote eastern province of Badakhshan, draws on extensive ethnographic and historical material to examine a revolving drug fund" program used by numerous nongovernmental organizations globally to address shortages of high-quality pharmaceuticals in poor communities. Provocative, rigorous, and accessible, Blind Spot offers a cautionary tale about the forces driving decision making in health and development policy today, illustrating how the privatization of health care can have catastrophic outcomes for some of the world's most vulnerable populations.

Simon & Schuster The Five Archetypes: Discover Your True Nature and Transform Your Life and Relationships
Discover the personality archetypes within you and improve your life and relationships with a new self-guided system of personal transformation. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) philosophy, the elements Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water are the foundation of how nature grows and evolves. They are believed to help us understand everything from illness and healing to the fundamental processes of child development—and they continue to inform Chinese medicine practice today. But as Ayurvedic nutritionist, reiki master, and Tournesol founder Carey Davidson demonstrates in this book, each of the five elements can also be seen as a personality archetype—and inside all of us is a unique blend of these archetypes that serves as a window into living a more fulfilling life on every level. In The Five Archetypes, Davidson explains that by knowing the personality traits associated with each type and using what she calls the Five Archetypes method, you can actually start to predict your behavioral patterns—not only with yourself but also with your friends, your romantic partner, your children, and even your colleagues. By practicing this method, you will also: -Learn how to exercise more control over behaviors that thwart your potential -Hone your self-awareness and self-regulation skills in the face of day-to-day stress -And understand what really makes people tick, so that you spend less time in stagnant relationships and more time in gratifying ones Through her study of the elements and the observations she’s made in her work with individuals, couples, companies, parents, kids, and educators, Davidson has created a simplified and practical guide to harnessing the strengths of our five archetypes. Complete with an assessment designed to help you discover your primary, secondary, and lowest types, The Five Archetypes will not only teach you more about yourself and others but also transform your relationships and set you on the path to personal and interpersonal harmony.

Oxbow Books Building for Eternity: The History and Technology of Roman Concrete Engineering in the Sea
One marker of the majesty of ancient Rome is its surviving architectural legacy, the stunning remains of which are scattered throughout the circum-Mediterranean landscape. Surprisingly, one truly remarkable aspect of this heritage remains relatively unknown. There exists beneath the waters of the Mediterranean the physical remnants of a vast maritime infrastructure that sustained and connected the western world’s first global empire and economy. The key to this incredible accomplishment and to the survival of structures in the hostile environment of the sea for two thousand years was maritime concrete, a building material invented and then employed by Roman builders on a grand scale to construct harbor installations anywhere they were needed, rather than only in locations with advantageous geography or topography. This book explains how the Romans built so successfully in the sea with their new invention. The story is a stimulating mix of archaeological, geological, historical and chemical research, with relevance to both ancient and modern technology. It also breaks new ground in bridging the gap between science and the humanities by integrating analytical materials science, history, and archaeology, along with underwater exploration. The book will be of interest to anyone interested in Roman architecture and engineering, and it will hold special interest for geologists and mineralogists studying the material characteristics of pyroclastic volcanic rocks and their alteration in seawater brines. The demonstrable durability and longevity of Roman maritime concrete structures may be of special interest to engineers working on cementing materials appropriate for the long-term storage of hazardous substances such as radioactive waste.A pioneering methodology was used to bore into maritime structures both on land and in the sea to collect concrete cores for testing in the research laboratories of the CTG Italcementi Group, a leading cement producer in Italy, the University of Berkeley, and elsewhere. The resulting mechanical, chemical and physical analysis of 36 concrete samples taken from 11 sites in Italy and the eastern Mediterranean have helped fill many gaps in our knowledge of how the Romans built in the sea. To gain even more knowledge of the ancient maritime technology, the directors of the Roman Maritime Concrete Study (ROMACONS) engaged in an ambitious and unique experimental archaeological project – the construction underwater of a reproduction of a Roman concrete pier or pila. The same raw materials and tools available to the ancient builders were employed to produce a reproduction concrete structure that appears to be remarkably similar to the ancient one studied during ROMACON’s fieldwork between 2002-2009.This volume reveals a remarkable and unique archaeological project that highlights the synergy that now exists between the humanities and science in our continuing efforts to understand the past. It will quickly become a standard research tool for all interested in Roman building both in the sea and on land, and in the history and chemistry of marine concrete. The authors also hope that the data and observations it presents will stimulate further research by scholars and students into related topics, since we have so much more to learn in the years ahead.
