Interventions is a photobook by Adrian Bugge (b. 1981) presenting 57 images of human intervention in Norwegian nature. Bugge has been taking photographs for 15 years, from Kirkenes in the far north of Norway to Oslo in the south. Along the way he has stumbled across interventions on a magnitude of which many in Norway are unaware. The book contains a foreword by Bugge with an account of the background to the project, and a research-oriented text by the geologist Henrik H. Svensen, who addresses the consequences of these interventions. Text in English and Norwegian.

His Univers typeface and the machine-readable font OCR-B are milestones, as is his type for the Paris airports, which evolved into the Frutiger typeface. All set new standards for signage types. In all, he created some fifty types, including Ondine, Méridien, Avenir, and Vectora. Based on conversations with Frutiger himself and on extensive research, this publication provides a highly detailed and accurate account of the type designer’s artistic development. All of his types – from the design phase to the marketing stage – are illustrated and analyzed with reference to the technology and related types. Hitherto unpublished types that were never realized and more than one hundred logos complete the picture.

This is a true historical account of war in the air, at sea and on land in the battle for Malta's survival in the Second World War. It was a battle which decided the outcome of the war in North Africa and the Mediterranean. At least since his spectacular exhibition in the Romanian Pavilion at the 56th Venice Biennale in 2015, Adrian Ghenie (*1977 in Baia Mare, Romania) has been known to the broad public as one of the most interesting and unconventional painters of his generation. His works—painted in oils that have been scratched, applied with a palette knife, orthrown onto the canvas—have already gained entry into the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Tate Modern in London, and the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and have achieved one auction record after another in the art market. Yet neither Ghenie’s subjects nor his technique cater to the taste of the public: the history of the “century of humiliation”—which is how Ghenie refers tothe twentieth century—its perpetrators and victims are the most important sources for his collage-like compositions. These subjects are joined by his positive heroes alike, such as Van Gogh and Darwin, and time after time, his self portrait.

The first detailed study of the working relationship and productive friendship between Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) and Adrian Boult (1889-1983). From 1918 onwards, Boult became one of Vaughan Williams's most important interpreters, giving the world premieres of the Pastoral, Fourth and Sixth Symphonies, performing almost all his major works (not only at home but with some of the world's greatest orchestras), and working in close collaboration with the composer on major projects including the first complete recording of Vaughan Williams's symphonies. Boult continued to be the most devoted advocate of Vaughan Williams's music to the end of his long career. As this book shows, Boult's scores include numerous annotations derived from conversations and correspondence with Vaughan Williams and these provide important evidence of the composer's wishes including adjustments to orchestration, comments on interpretation, dynamics, phrasing and revisions to Vaughan Williams's notoriously unreliable metronome marks. The evidence of these scores is considered alongside the extensive correspondence between Vaughan Williams and Boult, Boult's private diaries and other relevant documents including contemporary press reports. In 1972 the artist Adrian Piper began periodically dressing as a persona called the Mythic Being, striding the streets of New York in a mustache, Afro wig, and mirrored sunglasses with a cigar in the corner of her mouth. Her Mythic Being performances critically engaged with popular representations of race, gender, sexuality, and class; they challenged viewers to accept personal responsibility for xenophobia and discrimination and the conditions that allowed them to persist. Piper’s work confronts viewers and forces them to reconsider assumptions about the social construction of identity. Adrian Piper: Race, Gender, and Embodiment is an in-depth analysis of this pioneering artist’s work, illustrated with more than ninety images, including twenty-one in color.Over the course of a decade, John P. This book is the tale of a small boy from Surrey who had a fascination with anything on wheels and, also, loved to learn about people and what motivated them. He read a lot about railways and was excited by the innovations of our nineteenth-century predecessors. When the Beeching report came out in 1963, he decided that he wanted to be a part of the new order and help bring back some of that excitement. He describes his upbringing and paints a picture of the 'greyness' of the 1950s and then takes the reader on a voyage of discovery into the world of 1960's engineering before he joined British Railway in 1970. The view from the inside presents readers with a whole new picture of what was really going on within British Rail at various levels. Much that is reported has never before been published, and the reasons for many decisions on previously opaque matters are explained. The author was cautioned by his school careers master to be wary of saying what he really thought. It seems that this piece of advice has not been heeded.

Interested in the symbols that represent ideologies and that construct collective identities, he searches in his photography for the memory of the historical past and its impact on his cultural present. His work is organised in series that sometimes interconnect and complement each other. Each new series is a consequence of the previous one, with similar concerns and interests, from black and white photography with a documentary perspective, to studio photography, to the use of digital media and colour photography.
