Schiffer Publishing Ltd Kevin Smith: His Films and Fans
This fun and photo-filled biography celebrates the life, films, and fans of the director responsible for such indie cult classics as Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. Movie-industry veteran David Gati has compiled and edited a humorous and insightful look at Smith’s nearly 30-year filmmaking journey. Through Smith’s own funny, honest, and uncensored stories—taken from podcasts, Q&As, and documentaries—readers get to know him as a person, the struggles he’s been through, and the people he’s worked with, as well as his process for writing, directing, casting, shooting, editing, and showing his films to the public. The book is arranged chronologically with each chapter exploring how an aspect of Kevin’s life is reflected in one of his 14 films. Not to be overlooked is Smith’s outsized fan base, who relate to the director’s down-to-earth persona and his geeky, sometimes juvenile, often-nostalgic regular-person characters. Gati uses their fan art to add a visual facet to the book’s colorful narrative gems. Rounding out this scrapbook presentation are on-set stills, candid personal photos, and memorabilia. The result is an exploration of how films affect and reflect the popular culture of their time, with a light-hearted analysis of the phenomenon of fandom. This unusual biography is a must-have collectible dedicated to a member of the ’90s independent filmmakers—which includes Quentin Tarantino, Allison Anders, Robert Rodriguez, Hal Hartley, and Spike Lee—whose relevance and popularity will only continue to grow.

Schiffer Publishing Ltd Fubuki-Class Destroyers: In the Imperial Japanese Navy during World War II
A comprehensive look at World War II-era Fubuki class destroyers, giving readers an understanding of why and how the Imperial Japanese Navy took the lead in destroyer design The World War II–era destroyers of the Japanese Fubuki class were the first of a type sometimes referred to as "super destroyers." These destroyers were extremely large and heavily armed with guns and torpedoes. Ironically, the IJN was pushed to create heavier destroyers by the terms of the Washington Naval Treaty, which discouraged the construction of new capital ships. Particular emphasis was placed on ships that were important for the night battle preceding the "decisive battle." Thereby the stage was prepared for the Fubuki class. This book presents: The history of their design, construction, and combat history Original Japanese war-era source material, including numerous diagrams and photos. The coauthors are recognized authorities in the study of the IJN in WWII The Fubuki class introduced a new standard for Japanese destroyers, a standard followed by almost all Japanese destroyers designed afterward.

Schiffer Publishing Ltd The Last One Out: Yates McDaniel, World War II's Most Daring Reporter
The exciting story of a newspaper reporter who risked his life in Nanking, Singapore, and Manila to provide the world with riveting coverage of World War II in Asia. When Yates McDaniel died in Florida in 1983, few outside his family paid much attention. The only hint of his fame came in a brief obituary buried on the inside pages of the New York Times. The obit suggested bravery and a past far more exciting than almost anyone knew. Even those who worked alongside him in the 1960s at the Associated Press were startled to learn what McDaniel had been, what he had done when he was a young man and the world was at war. McDaniel covered more of the Asian war than anyone else—from the savage Japanese assault on Nanking in 1937 to the fall of Singapore in 1942 to landing with US Marines on New Britain in 1943. He took risks no other reporter ever accepted, and colleagues joked that Japanese bombers followed him wherever he went. He was the last reporter to leave Singapore before its fall to the Japanese in 1942. He escaped on one of the last ships leaving Singapore, and when it was sunk by Japanese aircraft, he and 130 others had to survive on a deserted island. Author Jack Torry spent two and a half years reading hundreds of the subject's newspaper articles, examining scores of letters written by McDaniel's parents and sister, going through personal letters he wrote during the war, and reviewing extensive interview notes in the Library of Congress.

Schiffer Publishing Ltd Who Are They Really?: New Approaches to Identifying UFOs, Abductions, and Extraterrestrials
Who are they really? You may be astounded to learn that UFOs and extraterrestrial beings have been visiting Earth regularly for ages—but not in the way you might think. And abductions are terrifyingly real. For a very long time, men and women have been confronted with nonhuman beings who physically abused them. Supported by previously overlooked traditional, religious, and spiritual knowledge, this first-of-its-kind study shows that abductions of human beings into UFOs are committed by beings connected to humankind. The philosophical significance of these discoveries is immense. These “space travelers,” or visitors, or kidnappers conduct themselves as neutral observers of the progress of Earth’s affairs. Even more surprising, they can be human beings like us or elementals (such as fairies and elves), and some of them live among us. His shocking, science-based analysis turns previous notions about UFOs and abductions on their head. The presence of aliens on Earth is now established—but not all aliens are extraterrestrials.

Schiffer Publishing Ltd AD and A-1 Skyraider: Douglas's "Spad" in Korea and Vietnam
Design work on the Skyraider began at the behest of the US Navy late in WWII. Production began in 1946, and the type made its combat debut in the hands of naval aviators during the Korean War. In the following years, the rugged airframe and powerful engine meant that the type could be adapted into ever-expanding roles of attack, reconnaissance, weather, and electronic-countermeasure types. Though regarded by many as obsolete, in Vietnam the Skyraider again saw combat, now in the hands of not only US Navy and Marine pilots, but also USAF and Republic of Vietnam airmen. Capable of flying low and slow while armed with a massive array of ordnance, the Skyraider not only took on the role of attack aircraft but was also used as air cover for troops on the ground. Its impressive payload earned it the nickname of the "flying dump truck," while its reliance on a massive radial engine in an otherwise jet age caused others to refer to the Skyraider as the "Spad," in homage to the WWI fighter.

This corps comprised the three most controversial divisions of the Second World War: Leibstandarte, Das Reich, and Totenkopf. The war crimes committed by these units (at places like Oradour, Malmedy, and Le Paradis) remain contentious topics of discussion to this day, and their fighting qualities have been analyzed for decades. By examining a focused group of men in great detail, specifically the 226 Tiger crewmen at Kursk, the author provides an insight into the sprawling and enigmatic organization that was the Waffen-SS. This project aims to scrape away the mythology surrounding the most-feared soldiers, who crewed the most iconic tank, at one of the most vicious battles of the Second World War.

Schiffer Publishing Ltd LVT(4) Amtrac: The Most Widely Used Amphibious Tractor of World War II
Originally developed as a swamp rescue vehicle by millionaire philanthropists Donald and John Roebling, the LVT (Landing Vehicle, Tracked), or "Alligator," was widely used in the Allied island-hopping campaign in the Pacific during World War II. Powered by a mammoth aircraft-type engine, the LVT(4) could cross treacherous coral reefs, deep water, and swamps to land troops ashore. The LVT(4) also introduced the rear ramp, which when lowered allowed troops to rush out, rather than clamber over the tall sides as on previous models. Produced by Food Machinery Corporation (FMC), railway equipment manufacturer St. Louis Car Company, and automobile maker Graham-Paige, over 8,000 LVT(4)s were built during the war; today only a few remain. Through dozens of archival photos as well as detailed photographs of some of the finest existent examples of these vehicles, this iconic landing vehicle is explored, and its history is explained.
