The Poet and the King, described by the New York Review of Books as “the finest and most perceptive of all the innumerable accounts of La Fontaine,” is being offered for the first time in an English translation. La Fontaine, whose works are still memorized by French schoolchildren, is regarded by Fumaroli, and countless others, as the greatest French lyric poet of the seventeenth century. La Fontaine is best known, however, for his fables and Contes. Marc Fumaroli’s grand study is almost as much about Louis XIV as it is about La Fontaine. He provides a detailed analysis of the absolutist politics and attempts by the king and his ministers to enforce an official cultural style. Fumaroli’s work is a meditation on the plight of the artist under such a ruler during the imposition of a tyrannical, centralized political regime. Of particular interest to Fumaroli is Nicolas Foucquet, whose fall from power is the central event of the book. Foucquet, La Fontaine’s patron, was arrested and imprisoned by order of Louis XIV on false charges of embezzlement and treason. For La Fontaine, the arrest was a disaster. Foucquet had generously supported and protected La Fontaine, who remained loyal to him for decades, helping in his defense and writing pleas for pardon. Many of Foucquet’s associates were arrested. Others, including La Fontaine, prudently left town. During the reign of Louis XIV, the basic role of literature in the eyes of the court was that of an official propaganda machine. The royal cultural policy supported only tragedy and the heroic ode, and demanded works that praised the king. In the years that followed Foucquet’s arrest, La Fontaine had to rely on support from groups unconnected with the government, including Jansenists, Protestants, and the libertine, homosexual circle of the Duc de Vendôme. Fumaroli reads history with an eye on the modern world. His La Fontaine and his Foucquet, his world of free culture in opposition to state power, are models for the liberal vision of the possible role of culture in modern society. The Poet and the King offers not only a captivating history of one of France’s greatest poets, but also carries the message that great literature and art can be created in spite of repressive cultural and political regimes.

The Bargue-Gerome Drawing Course is a complete reprint of a famous, late nineteenth-century drawing course. It contains a set of almost two hundred masterful lithographs of subjects for copying by drawing students before they attempt drawing from life or nature. Consequently it is a book that will interest artists, art students, art historians, and lovers and collectors of drawings. It also introduces us to the work and life of a hitherto neglected master: Charles Bargue. The Drawing Course consists of three sections. The first consists of plates drawn after casts, usually of antique examples. Different parts of the body are studied in order of difficulty, until full figures are presented. The second section pays homage to the western school of painting, with lithographs after exemplary drawings by Renaissance and modern masters. The third part contains almost 60 academies, or drawings after nude male models, all original inventions by Bargue, the lithographer. With great care, the student is introduced to continually more difficult problems in the close observing and recording of nature. Charles Bargue started his career as a lithographer of drawings by hack artists for a popular market in comic, sentimental and soft-porn subjects. By working with Gerome, and in preparing the plates for the course, Bargue was transformed into a spectacular painter of single figures and intimate scenes; a master of precious details that always remain observation and never became self-conscious virtuosity, and colour schemes that unified his composition in exquisite tonal harmonies. The last part of the book is a biography of Bargue, along with a preliminary catalogue of his paintings, accompanied by reproductions of all that have been found and of many of those lost.

Philosophical thinking is interrupted by the finitude of what cannot be named, on the one hand, and that within which it is subsumed as one of multiple modes of sense-making, on the other. Jean Prouvé began to design portable and demountable barracks for the French army during the Second World War. After the war, the French government commissioned Prouvé to design inexpensive, effective housing for the newly homeless, prompting him to perfect his patented axial portal frame to build easily constructed demountable houses. Few of these groundbreaking structures were built, making them exceedingly rare today—prompting Galerie Patrick Seguin’s tireless efforts over the past 27 years to preserve and promote these important designs. The gallery owns the largest collection of Prouvé’s demountables, 22 in total. This volume focuses on his 1956 Demountable House, and is luxuriously illustrated with archival and contemporary photographs. Celle-ci a ete abandonnee par son auteur et remplacee par la version dite "de 1810" ou le meme materiau narratif se trouve reorganise, sensiblement modifie et conduit jusqu'a son achevement. cette version de 1810 est editee dans le volume IV, 1 de la serie. Les deux etats du roman-culte de Potocki presentent deux conceptions esthetiques tres differentes appliquees a une meme matiere romanesque. Bien que l'une d'elles soit demeuree inachevee, il sera desormais necessaire, pour se faire une idee pleine de ce chef-d'oeuvre, de prendre connaissance des deux versions. On dispose ainsi pour la premiere fois d'une edition integrale et fiable, etablie sur la base de toutes les sources disponibles, dont une partie etait restee inconnue a ce jour.Avec le volume IV, 2 des Oeuvers de Jean Potocki est livre un CD-Rom qui contient la transcription exacte de tous les documents originels connus du "Manuscrit trouve a Saragosse", manuscrits et imprimes, ainsi que le texte de trois ouvrages de chronologie de Potocki. Jean Prouvé (1901–1984) is widely recognised as one of the most extraordinary engineers of the twentieth century. His constructions and inventions in the fields of industrial manufacturing, prefabrication, and the use of new materials like aluminum and corrugated iron as well as his design sketches are an abiding and significant influence on many architects and engineers today. The fourth volume of the complete works deals with Prouvé’s creative period from 1954 to 1984, covering 200 projects, including such major works as the Alpexpo exhibition halls in Grenoble, gas stations for Total, the pump room in Evian, curtain walls – for example for the Freie Universität (Free University) in Berlin and the Medical School of Erasmus University in Rotterdam – and his final work, the radar tower in Ouessant. From 1957 to 1970 Prouvé was also professor at the Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers in Paris.
