The social, cultural and economic significance of leisure is increasing around the world. Watching television, reading, socializing with friends and family, playing sport, attending entertainment, arts and sporting events, and visiting the coast, the countryside, historic sites, museums, galleries and exhibitions are important aspects of modern life, and providing for these activities is an increasingly significant feature of modern economies. In most developed countries nationwide surveys are conducted periodically to assess levels of participation in leisure activities. This book brings together the results of such surveys from thirteen different countries, namely: Australia, Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Israel, Japan, New Zealand, Poland, Spain and the USA. While the surveys vary enormously in scope, methodology, scale and timing, making it difficult to compare leisure patterns directly, they nevertheless indicate some marked similarities in leisure participation in industrial societies in the ‘global village’. The book provides a unique reference source on patterns of leisure participation in the thirteen countries, and also examines the methodological problems of conducting national leisure participation surveys, and their future prospects.

Conservationist Grant Fowlds lives to save and protect Africa's rhinos, elephants and other iconic wildlife, to preserve their habitats, to increase their range and bring back the animals where they have been decimated by decades of war, as in Angola, Mozambique and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The city of Ur—now modern Tell el-Muqayyar in southern Iraq, also called Ur of the Chaldees in the Bible—was one of the most important Sumerian cities in Mesopotamia during the Early Dynastic Period in the first half of the third millennium BCE. The city is known for its impressive wealth and artistic achievements, evidenced by the richly decorated objects found in the so-called Royal Cemetery, which was excavated by the British Museum and the University of Pennsylvania from 1922 until 1934. Ur was also the cult center of the moon god, and during the twenty-first century BCE, it was the capital of southern Mesopotamia.With contributions from both established and rising Assyriologists from ten countries and edited by three leading scholars of Assyriology, this volume presents thirty-two essays based on papers delivered at the 62nd Rencontre Assyriologique Internationale held in Philadelphia in 2016. Equipped with the “Carrera” 4-cam engine, the 356 was a force in sports car racing. Dedicated competition models were developed beginning in 1953, and the Rennsport Spyders dominated road racing, endurance, and hill climb events for over a decade.The 356 story includes a cast of fascinating characters, from those engineers who designed the cars, to race drivers who built the “giant-killer” mystique, to owners like James Dean and Janis Joplin who fell in love with the little bathtub-shaped sports cars. This volume contains the full texts of 175 acts issued under the seal of King Alexander III, together with notes on a further 155 'lost acts' that survive only in notices. These acts, many of which have never been published before, have been collected from a variety of archives in Scotland, England, Belgium and France.
