Schiffer Publishing Ltd Loaded: Guns in Contemporary Art
Works by nearly 100 of today's most prominent artists—including Willie Cole, Mark Dion, Mona Hatoum, Peter Saul, Yinka Shonibare, and Laurie Simmons—raise questions about the many issues that firearms trigger, leaving answers up to the reader. This invigorating survey of contemporary art and guns offers insight into the mixed associations of firearms in our culture. Situating these artworks within the contexts of fire domestication, weapon history, social movements, and art history, the book touches on subjects of power, equality, and access, and the current debates surrounding gun use. What emerges is the inherently dualistic nature of firearms, which are both protective and destructive, empowering and enfeebling, supporting peace and war, life and death. While this central ambivalence can't be captured in statistical data or media sound bites, it thrives within these complex visual works. This collection reveals a striking diversity of viewpoints on guns, highlighting their inescapable duplicity and the compelling role they have come to play within our lives and imaginations.

Schiffer Publishing Ltd Blackboards and Bomb Shelters: The Perilous Journey of Americans in China during World War II
An action-packed human interest story about four young men and their life-changing experiences in China during WWII. When three Yale graduates traveled to China in the summer of 1941 to teach English to middle-school students, they routinely taught classes outside a bomb shelter. When air raid sirens wailed, classes continued until the Japanese planes could be heard, then all quickly scrambled inside to safety. The US entry into the war turned their educational mission upside down. One was recruited for a stint driving supplies along the Burma Road. A second Yale teacher took a senior staff position with "Flying Tigers" commander Gen. Claire Lee Chennault. The third man, a conscientious objector, remained at the school to keep it running during the war. Their mission was inextricably linked with the broader Yale-in-China medical mission, headed by a young surgeon in Changsha. This is an engaging story of Americans in China, educating civilians, healing the wounded, and supporting Chinese military resistance against Japanese imperialism. It is the untold story of life on the ground in Free China during the Japanese occupation.

Schiffer Publishing Ltd Hump Drivers: An American Pilot's Account of Flying over the Himalayas during WWII
A gritty, unglamorous, unfiltered look at the daily life of an American transport pilot in the WWII Burma theater. Arthur La Vove was born in Manhattan in 1909, the son of a French military attaché. Arthur flew commercial airliners for Century Airways and United in 1930s. When Pearl Harbor was attacked in 1941, he volunteered for the Army Air Force. Any enthusiasm that Arthur had for the conflict quickly eroded once he arrived in the CBI, the China-Burma-India theater of operations, for service with Air Transport Command. La Vove was a “Hump Pilot,” conducting the hazardous duty of ferrying men and material over the Himalayan Mountains, propping up American, Commonwealth, and Chinese Nationalist forces in their struggle against the Japanese in South Asia. The aircraft of the day were not well suited to handle the extreme environment, and the Himalayas remain littered with the remnants of aircraft and their crew who did not make it over the Hump. Arthur survived the war and studied journalism at Columbia University. He lived a long and prosperous life, excelling in various pursuits including writing, flying, and car racing. As to be expected from a professional journalist, Arthur’s account of the Second World War is exceptionally articulate in its prose. More unusual is the dark tone of the narrative, ranging from visceral descriptions of violence to biting irony and bitter humor. Like most WWII combat veterans, Arthur and his friends suffered multitude depredations during their time in theater, and some never returned home. What is exceptional about La Vove’s writing, particularly for an American, is that he clearly felt these sacrifices were made in vain. Each chapter begins with an original sketch by the author, drawn in-theater. This is an unusually eloquent and poignant account of service in WWII by a man who lived it.

Schiffer Publishing Ltd Sōryū, Hiryū, and Unryū-Class Aircraft Carriers: In the Imperial Japanese Navy during World War II
This book covers the design and construction of the two well-known Sōryū and Hiryū carriers, and the lesser-known ships of the Unryū class, and relies on original Japanese source material, including numerous photos, drawings, and specifications. How and why the Japanese designed and constructed the WWII-era, medium-sized Sōryū, Hiryū, and Unryū-class aircraft carriers, and how they were operated, is covered in detail. The Imperial Japanese Navy planned the construction of 45 aircraft carriers from 1918 to 1943 and commissioned 25 of them between 1922 and 1944. These types were large, medium, and small aircraft carriers, with some converted from other warship classes, and escort aircraft carriers remodeled from passenger ships. The medium type presented here formed the majority, with a total of 18 planned: five were completed, three remained in various completion stages at the end of the Pacific War, and ten were eventually canceled.

Schiffer Publishing Ltd The Story of Lime and the Lime Kilns of Lancaster County
Lime is a white, powdery substance widely used in construction, agriculture, and industry. It is manufactured by heating limestone. Small amounts may be produced in an open fire but more effectively when enclosed. Early pits were lined with stone and in time enclosed in an oven or kiln. The 19th-century lime kiln, of Roman design, was a large "pot" dug into a hillside, surrounded by a stone box resembling a huge fireplace. Many thousands were built in the Susquehanna River valley. During settlement of "Penn's Woods," large tracts were subdivided many times, and by 1925 we find 12,000 farms in Lancaster County alone, and nearly every farmer wanted to produce his own lime to sweeten the fields and make mortar, plaster, and whitewash. In the most recent record, the 1875 county atlas, we find more than 500 kilns, a peak time for "do it yourself" lime burning. Commercialization relieved the farmer of the hard and dangerous work of lime burning, and the kilns fell idle around the turn of the century. Today we find evidence of 128 extant kilns in the county. Some are little more than remnants of former stonework, but others remain sturdy and sound. Their photos in this book reveal the art and labor of our ancestors who played a major role in the development of our nation.

Schiffer Publishing Ltd Design with Love: At Home in America
Over the last 20 years, the Enterprise Rose Fellows—a program of Enterprise Community Partners—have gained a deep understanding of the conditions that cause housing insecurity, poverty, and injustice by embedding themselves in the communities where they work. By using proven design processes, artistic practices, and community engagement principles, and committing to long-term collaborations with residents, they have drastically improved the quality of life in vulnerable communities. Simply put, they have changed lives. This collection of stories and intimate documentary photographs delivers lessons in how we can work together to improve the lives of our neighbors. On the US-Mexico border, in farm country, in Rust Belt cities, and in pockets of blight and abandonment, the examples show that architecture is about human relationships and shared ambitions, and how buildings can support and embody them.

Schiffer Publishing Ltd SB2C Helldiver: Curtiss’s Carrier-Based Dive Bomber in World War II
While initally labeled as a troublesome aircraft, the Curtiss SB2C Helldiver went on to be noted for striking more Japanese targets than any other US Navy dive bomber. Despite this, the Helldiver was to be the last of a long line of US Navy dive bombers. The development, production, and combat use of the many variations of the Helldiver are examined, including experimental variants that did not progress beyond the prototype stage. Profusely illustrated with war-era photographs, both black-and-white and color, which are augmented with beautiful color photos of the only remaining flyable example, this book provides the reader with a concise yet thorough study of this legendary aircraft. Part of the Legends of Warfare series.
