Rizzoli International Publications Modern New York: The Illustrated Story of Architecture in the Five Boroughs from 1920 to Present
Modern New York: The Illustrated Story of Architecture in the Five Boroughs from 1920 to Today takes the reader on a roller-coaster ride through the changing fortunes of New York City throughout the last hundred years, from the heights of the Roaring Twenties and Mad Men Fifties, to the depths of the Great Depression Thirties, through to Fear City in the Seventies, and beyond. Many of the featured buildings won t be found in city guides and some of them are no longer around but each one played an integral part in the fascinating story of the five boroughs. The ten decades are explored through some 150 buildings in all corners of the city, from Rockefeller Center to the Pan Am Building to the Standard Hotel, as well as treasures lost, such as the 1927 Savoy-Plaza Hotel, and treasures rescued, such as the astonishingly glamourous 1924 American Radiator Building, now the Bryant Park Hotel. New York City has been described from every possible angle through thousands of books. But not many of them venture out of Manhattan, let alone visit all five boroughs. Out of these, only a handful is accessible to non-experts and fewer still are entertaining and illustrated. And none of them offer such a crisp and visually unified picture of the Big Apple.

Rizzoli International Publications Capability Brown: Designing the English Landscape
Widely acknowledged as the most influential land- scape designer of his age, Lancelot Capability Brown was to England what Frederick Law Olmsted was to America responsible for shaping the very ideal of the nation s parkland. Brown s ambition was to bring out of a landscape the best of its potential rather than impose his own ideas upon it. His designs are organic, weaving gestures of colour and perspective into the features that the country already afforded. So natural are his designs, and so perfectly do they complement the houses within them, that for many a Capability Brown landscape is the epitome of the English estate. His gardens and park- lands as much as the houses themselves would become icons of British country life. Published to coincide with the tercentenary of his birth, this remarkable book illuminates fifteen of Brown s most celebrated landscapes. To love the great English estates is to love the settings with which Brown surrounded them from idyllic parklands at Milton and Broadlands to structured landscapes around iconic houses at Blenheim, Burghley, Wake- field, and Chatsworth. With photography commissioned for the book, and including rarely seen archival drawings that shed light on Brown s process, this book serves as a guide to Britain s most beloved landscapes and an exploration of the masterful mind behind their creation.

Rizzoli International Publications Frank Lloyd Wright: The Houses
Frank Lloyd Wright is not only synonymous with architecture, his name is also synonymous with the American house in the twentieth century. In particular, his residential work has been the subject of continuing interest and controversy. Wright's Fallingwater (1935), the seminal masterpiece perched over a waterfall deep in the Pennsylvania highlands, is perhaps the best-known private house in the history of the world. In fact, Wright's houses-from his Prairie style Robie House (1906) in Chicago, to the Storer (1923) and Freeman (1923) houses in Los Angeles, and Taliesen West (1937) in the Arizona desert-are all touchstones of modern architecture. For the first time, all 289 extant houses are shown here in exquisite color photographs. Along with Weintraub's stunning photos and a selection of floor plans and archival images, the book includes text and essays by several leading Wright scholars. Frank Lloyd Wright: The Houses is an event of great importance and a major contribution to the literature on this titan of modern architecture.

Rizzoli International Publications Stelle Lomont Rouhani: Architecture and Interiors
Modern houses that are timeless, thoughtfully detailed, marked by innovative and environmentally friendly design, and inevitably situated close to nature by the sea, on the bluff, upon the dunes are the hallmark of Stelle Lomont Rouhani. From Casa Loma and Lazy Point to House on the Point and Atlantic Dunes, mere mention of the homes is enough to inspire visions of some contemporary Xanadu. But it is the specifics, the careful use of materials, the very close attention to place, bespoke furniture and fixtures, and above all a sensitivity to those who will live in the spaces created that make these extraordinary works of architecture such beloved dwellings. With thought to an ultimate experience of comfort, to space and light, to views, and to a way of living beside nature that is considerate of nature, the architects open walls toward the sea and position decks to allow for the enjoyment of morning sunlight and scented breezes redolent of bayberries and pine. Ultimately it is a kind of harmony the architects are after and doing more with less, a Zen-like quality that renews the spirit, offering serenity and repose and which, in the houses featured here, they so warmly, so quietly find.

Rizzoli International Publications Casa Santa Fe: Design, Style, Arts, and Tradition
Desert hues, natural materials, thick hand-plastered walls, and adobe brick construction are hallmarks of the Santa Fe Style, which is as much an expression in architecture, interior design, art, and crafts as it is a way of life. Rooted in a sense of earthy comfort inspired by its history, the surrounding desert, and Native American and Hispanic design influences, the style has a timeless appeal and vibrant ongoing life that has resulted in these extraordinary homes. With features such as eighteenth-century peeled vigas, tin chandeliers, romantic iron sconces, and hand-hewn wood-beamed ceilings, each house is a rich yet harmonious invitation that will engage the senses and speak to the soul. Beyond the houses, the writer and photographer spotlight those details and spaces that together convey the magic of this very special place, including patios and gardens; fireplaces, kivas, and hornos; ceramics; Native American arts; cabinets and trasteros; folk art; and weaving. Casa Santa Fe is the definitive sourcebook for architects, designers, builders, homeowners, and interior decorators seeking to expand their visual repertoire of historically defined and classically inspired architectural details and interior appointments.

Rizzoli International Publications A House in Maine
The interiors of this glorious retreat's many buildings are given the Nina Campbell treatment with vibrant palettes, sumptuous fabrics, fine antiques, and a contemporary clarity. Constructed at the turn of the last century, the core of the main house is a simple cottage overlooking a secluded cove. The pioneering couple who built it had no idea that they were creating a legacy that would become central to the lives of future generations of their family, who use the place as a retreat from busy lives in the city. The main house evolved from that summer cottage to a larger Federal-style manse whose recent reinvention was overseen by New York architects Ferguson & Shamamian in a landscape with outlets for indoor and outdoor bliss. Campbell is familiar with creating backdrops for entertaining she had previously designed Annabel s, the renowned private members club in London. With a dedicated party villa, bowling alley, pool house, and tennis pavilion as well as accommodations for family and friends, the property established itself as a place for fun and relaxation. Under the spreading branches of the tree that offered shade to the original house and garden, the place has become an oasis of peace and calm away from the din of the outside world.

Rizzoli International Publications Our Way Home: Reimagining an American Farmhouse
The glorious Connecticut property of Heide Hendricks and Rafe Churchill (of the architecture and interior design firm Hendricks Churchill) illustrates how a late nineteenth-century farmhouse can be adapted for stylish and comfortable twenty-first-century living. Rafe and Heide discovered their true home in a late 1800s New England farmhouse after a decade of living in Brooklyn, New York. The historic property, Ellsworth, is a showplace for their shared aesthetic and sensibility of designing for real life, and not for formality. At the core is a house of pared-down traditionalism with references to Shaker tranquility, Arts & Crafts practicality, and bohemian chic. Whimsical wallcoverings, striking colors, a mix of contemporary furniture and antiques, exciting works of art, and comfort abound turning a workaday house from the nineteenth century into a creative laboratory of the twenty-first. The house and its surroundings a constant work in progress with evolving interiors, landscaping objectives, a reconfigured sunroom, a barn restoration, and planned hiking trails have become an endless source of inspiration for the couple s many projects, which include residences in New England, New York s Hudson Valley, New York City, Oyster Bay, Boulder, and Austin. The narrative of the book addresses the couple s design process in terms of architecture, decoration, and final installation. As many Americans are deciding to leave cities for calmer, more connected lives in the country, Heide and Rafe illustrate how this transition can be one of beauty and logic.

Rizzoli International Publications NYC Ballet Fashion Gala
Celebrating the dual art forms of ballet and fashion, this beautiful book explores the creative collaborations between the New York City Ballet and top fashion designers of our age, including Valentino, Dries Van Noten, and Olivier Theyskens among others. Ballet and fashion have long been intertwined. From its creation in seventeenth-century France, classical ballet adapted elements from high style including the ballerina s corseted bodice, tulle skirt, and pointe shoes. The world of fashion happily reciprocated, incorporating balletic style into day and evening wear, a trend that continues to this day. The interrelationship between these beautiful art forms is exemplified by the New York City Ballet s annual Fall Fashion Gala in which the company s young choreographers collaborate with prominent fashion designers on a newly commissioned ballet. From the first gala in 2012 when renowned choreographers Peter Martins and Christopher Wheeldon worked with Valentino, up through the present, the performances have become the most glamorous cultural event of the season with the biggest names in fashion bringing their artistic vision to a never-seen-before ballet. With stunning photography, this book features incredible images of the dancers in motion, with details highlighting their couture costumes. Richly illustrated, with the designers costume sketches complementing the photography, the book also features interviews between the dancers, choreographers and designers, as well as essays by noted fashion writers, illuminating the dynamic process of design and dance.

Rizzoli International Publications Stephen Antonakos: Neon and Geometry
The first major retrospective of the preeminent Greek-born American artist, who was a pioneer in the use of neon in the realm of fine art. Prolific multimedia artist Stephen Antonakos (1926 2013) is best known for his resplendent abstract neon sculptures instantly recognizable for their vibrant colors and crisp geometry. His later pieces feature neon lights placed behind painted or gold-leaf panels, often bathing the surfaces and the surrounding space in gold halos like Byzantine icons, a tradition that has long fascinated this extraordinary artist. Author David Ebony provides research on Antonakos as a central figure in the international avant-garde of the 1960s and 70s. He also discusses the artist s Greek heritage and legacy, as well as the spiritual and mystical aspects of his later works.

Rizzoli International Publications Messana O'Rorke: Building Blocks
Founded in 1996 by Brian Messana and Toby O Rorke in New York City, Messana O Rorke describe their particular brand of minimalist-infected modernism as pragmatism, with their approach to design capturing as much usable square footage as possible, rigorously limiting the number of interior elements, and extracting maximum impact from the chosen interventions. This distinctive approach extends to their entire material vocabulary: white walls stripped of mouldings, with recessed lighting at their perimeter; honey-toned oak floors; highly polished stainless steel railings and hardware; and marble fixtures and countertops and dark limestone flooring in the bathrooms and kitchen. With their masterful manipulation of space and judicious selection of materials oak flooring wire-brushed and lightly limed to contrast white walls but also to bring out its vivid grain, simultaneously conveying the woodworker s craft and the rawness of nature; statuary marble in a kitchen chosen for the painterly quality of the veining; architectural photography and ceramic objects adding sophisticated drama Messana O Rorke create complete environments of simplicity and serenity.

Rizzoli International Publications Inventing the California Look : Interiors by Frances Elkins, Michael Taylor, John Dickinson, and Other Design In novators
From the 1940s to the 1980s, some of the best resi-dences in Northern California were decorated by a coterie of designers whose names were once recognized only by the cognoscenti of interior design. From Frances Elkins and Tony Hail, with their aristocratic aesthetics, to Michael Taylor and John Dickinson, with their bold fantasies, these designers created revolutionary settings that were idiomatic of their time and place fresh, luxurious spaces complementing the various terrains and lifestyles of the northern part of the state. Fred Lyon (b. 1924) is perhaps the only photographer who knew and documented the work of this talented group. Akin to what Julius Shulman was doing in Southern California, Lyon worked closely with the designers and magazine editors to help shape the look for posterity. In the years following the work of these giants, most of the spaces they created are gone or vastly changed, replaced by different tastes and new styles. Now re-appreciated for their artistry, we can relive this exciting era through Lyon s superb photography.

Rizzoli International Publications Saved: My Picture World
A visual autobiography of a kind as only Diane Keaton could tell it, via the celebrated star s idiosyncratic and personal collections and ruminative texts, Savedoffers an unprecedented glimpse into the mind of the legendary film star. The book begins with an homage to movies curiously, to old b grade horror flicks, such as Attack of the Puppet People a passion that manifests in a collection of rare film stills showing large-brain aliens with crablike hands and terrified men with eyes growing from their shoulders. In a second chapter or collection, the reader encoun-ters Cracked, a startling selection of crinkled and neglected negatives: found portraits that speak of the past through the broken lens of time. Even more intimately revealing are photographs taken by the star herself, be they of pigeons while on downtime from the set of Reds in London or of the greeters of Hollywood Boulevard, caught at the other end of her Rolleiflex camera lens, now revealed as the seen, the experienced, the remembered, the cherished. But this is only the beginning, the surface of a very deep dive into the wellsprings of one of the great creative talents at work today. The book is an invitation to dive in.
