Hirmer Verlag Alicja Kwade
The most recent installation by the internationally acclaimed artist Alicja Kwade (b. 1979), who comes from Katowice, explores the French physicist Léon Foucault’s (1819–1868) proof that the world rotates and develops the experiment further. The present volume illustrates the playful exploration of space and time using recent pictures from the Schirn rotunda. The Berlin-based artist Alicja Kwade’s scientificlooking experimental setups are reminiscent of surreal and phantasmagorical constellations and objects. The fascination of her work, which cannot be explained by reason alone, is rooted in the skilful superimposition and sometimes paradoxical nature of scientific and social realities. Things that are generally taken to be established facts are called into question and disproved. Here the artist explores the true movement of time, which will have an immediate effect on both space and the viewer.

Hirmer Verlag Ori Gersht: Forces of Nature : Film and Photography
Blurred landscapes, falling trees and the lofty peaks of the Pyrenees – the extraordinary aesthetics of Ori Gersht’s work seduce the viewer. But beneath the beautiful first appearances lie the sites of historical events – in this way the artist makes visible what is no longer plain to see. Ori Gersht (* 1967) views the landscape as the location of past events. On his journeys he follows the traces of the past and translates the process of remembering into powerfully expressive images. The impressive panorama of the Pyrenees, for example, is a site of a desperate flight from the National Socialists. His works of art are metaphors for the unsolvable relationships between past and present, between life and death. They are in the liminal space between (natural) forces and destruction on the one hand, and beauty and grandeur on the other. The images unfold their poetry and horror simultaneously in an extensive pictorial series.

Hirmer Verlag Minh Häusler: The Fusion of Flora and Art
In Minh Hausler’s oeuvre art and nature come together to form an unusual symbiosis. The floral creations made by the photographer and master of the Sogetsu School of Ikebana mesmerise the viewer with their clear and simultaneously powerful formal language, which allows the natural beauty of the flowers and blossoms to fully unfold. The literal meaning of the Japanese term “ikebana” is “living flowers”. The observation of nature therefore also represents one of the fundamental artistic principles of the artist Minh Hausler, who is originally from Vietnam. This is the source of her inspiration, which she transforms into delicate and powerfully expressive arrangements. Minh Hausler learned the art of ikebana, which is steeped in tradition, in Asia before developing her own, unmistakable style in Europe. Nowadays she teaches all over the world and presents more than 200 selected pieces from her oeuvre for the first time in this publication. In doing so, she showcases the various levels and styles of this timeless art, which strives for perfect harmony.

Hirmer Verlag Alfons Mucha
At the beginning of the twentieth century, when Alfons Mucha went to the United States for four years as a lecturer, the world-famous poster designer, Art-Nouveau book illustrator, designer, photographer and painter was greeted with enthusiasm. Mucha is regarded as one of the most important representatives of Jugendstil; he knew how to move between the various genres more skilfully than virtually any other artist of his day. After training as a stage decorator in Vienna, Mucha travelled via Munich to Paris. There he created a stir in the 1890s with his stylistically refined and elegantly executed posters. These designs were not only his artistic breakthrough; they also revolutionised the aesthetic of what was still a new medium. Mucha’s later works also demonstrated the inimitable “Mucha style,” which celebrated floral elements, lines and beauty and which is lavishly illustrated in this book.

Hirmer Verlag African Art from the Mack Collection
Like many great artists, Heinz Mack also found inspiration in African art. His artistic expeditions into the African desert and his encounters with the special light, the people and the architecture have continued to influence his art to this day. His collection of African art is being published for the first time. Since 1955 Heinz Mack has undertaken artistic expeditions into the deserts of Africa. It was here that he created his Sahara Project, with which he became a pioneer of Land Art. During his travels he purchased works by African artists which moved him, aroused his curiosity about foreign objects and which were then absorbed naturally into his life and work. The ornamental, sculptural and woven works by unknown African artists inspired Mack, and their power has been integrated into his own works on a subconscious level. The collection includes sculptures and objects made of wood, clay or metal – materials which are also characteristic for the reception of Mack’s art.

Hirmer Verlag Hans Purrmann
The painter Hans Purrmann (1880–1966) ranks among the most important colourists of twentieth- entury art. Drawing on Henri Matisse and the expressionists, he developed a distinct and acclaimed artistic practice over the course of a life lived in places from Munich to Paris to Berlin to Florence to Switzerland. Part of the secret of Hans Purrmann’s art is that in his work he translated the visible in a very specific and vibrant manner. With irrepressible curiosity, attentiveness and an unerring eye for beauty and the primal and essential, he produced works whose classification as “representational painting” falls short. In fact, his place in art history is one which continues to offer points of departure for modernism [“einen für die Moderne bis heute anschlussfähigen Rang”: in der Kunst ist die Moderne eine abgeschlossene Epoche]: in 1955 Purrmann was included in documenta I in Kassel, and in 1962 he was the subject of a major retrospective at the Haus der Kunst in Munich which was hailed by the press as a sensation. Based on new sources, Christoph Wagner presents the life and work of Hans Purrmann and places the painter as a prominent protagonist within the coordinates of twentieth-century art history.
