Dass man sich so intensiv auseinandersetzte, lag daran, dass diese theologische Problematik im Grunde weit ëber den Zusammenhang der "conversio" hinausging und zugleich die grundsätzliche, anthropologisch bedeutsame Frage tangierte, ob sich der Mensch frei und aus eigenem Antrieb dem Guten zuwenden könne. Den Spaltungen, den dieser Streit besonders innerhalb des Herzogtums Sachsen herauffëhrte, versuchte Herzog Johann Friedrich der Mittlere teils durch Vermittlungsbemëhungen, teils durch Entlassungen von Pfarrern und Professoren entgegenzuwirken. Im fënften Band der Edition "Controversia et Confessio" werden die fër den Streit ausschlaggebenden Texte von Johann Pfeffinger, Nikolaus von Amsdorf, Victorin Strigel, Matthias Flacius, Nikolaus Gallus und anderen Theologen geboten. Auch das "Weimarer Konfutationsbuchs", das hier erstmals kritisch ediert wird, ist in diesem Zusammenhang von Bedeutung.

Master Incapable (Wunengzi) is an important but relatively little-known Daoist work written in 887, as the Tang dynasty (618-907) was breathing its last. The unknown author, a former government official now living as a recluse, witnesses internecine warfare, widespread poverty, and rampant social injustice, and attempts to explain why humanity seems to be plunging into a state of utter chaos. The nucleus of Master Incapable's analysis is his view of the separation of humanity from the natural world, caused by an abnormal growth of the intellect. His critique is as radical as that in the so-called "primitivist" chapters of the Daoist classic Zhuangzi, in which civilization is considered a disease spread by an intellectual and societal elite, "those who are called sages." The way out of mankind's predicament, he argues, consists in deconstructing conventional wisdom, and in ridding oneself of desire and intentionality, thereby finding one's way back to naturalness and effortless action. Fiercely egalitarian in tone, Master Incapable also criticizes superstition, offers a coherent philosophy of reclusion, and holds highly original views on life and death, and language and intellect in the animal world. As a work of literature, it combines forcefully argued discussions and alternative interpretations on well-known historical episodes with glimpses into the private life of the philosopher, his family members and entourage. Israel Finkelstein is perhaps the best-known Israeli archaeologist in the world. Israel Finkelstein is a member of the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities and a correspondant étranger of the French Académie des Inscriptions et Belles Lettres.Professor Finkelstein is the recipient of the prestigious 2005 Dan David Prize for his radical revision of the history of Israel in the 10th and 9th centuries BCE. In 2009, he was named Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Minister of Culture, and in 2010 received an honorary doctorate from the University of Lausanne. He is a member of the selection committee of the Shanghai Archaeology Forum, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. In 2014, his book The Forgotten Kingdom was awarded the esteemed Prix Delalande-Guérineau by the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres in Paris.This volume, dedicated to Professor Finkelstein’s accomplishments and contributions, features 36 articles written by his colleagues, friends, and students in honor of his decades of scholarship and leadership in the field of biblical archaeology.
