On trouvera, dans ce premier volume des Oeuvres de Jean Potocki (1761-1815) un ensemble de textes d'une grande variete, meme s'ils sont tous relatifs a l'une des activites favorites de leur auteur: le voyage, qu'il a pratique depuis ses plus jeunes annees. Ainsi, quand il effectue son periple en Turquie et en Egypte, il a deja derriere lui de nombreux voyages, mais c'est la premiere fois qu'il en donne un temoignage ecrit elabore et surtout, ce "Voyage en Turquie et en Egypte fait en l'annee 1784" sera le premier de ses nombreux livres publies. Encourage sans doute par le succes de cette publication, Potocki ne fera plus de grands voyages, desormais, sans en livrer de relation. Certaines ont malheureusement ete perdues (celles d'Espagne, de France, d'Angleterre); celles qui nous restent sont suffisamment riches pour qu'on puisse considerer leur auteur comme un maitre dans ce genre. Beaucoup d'elements permettent de distinguer nettement le "Voyage en Turquie et en Egypte" du "Voyage en Hollande fait pendant la Revolution de 1787", puis du "Voyage dans l'Empire de Maroc fait en l'annee 1791" et enfin, du "Voyage dans quelques parties de la Basse-Saxe"; sans parler bien sur du voyage fictif, invente par Potocki sur le modele du conte oriental, "Le voyage de Hafez", publie a la suite du texte du Maroc. mais ils portent tous la marque originale de cet ecrivain-voyageur, nanti d'une erudition vertigineuse et en meme temps ouvert a toutes les lecons de l'experience immediate du monde, curieux de tout, jamais engonce dans de quelconques certitudes ni dans aucun prejuge, dote d'une plume qui est a la fois aceree et legere. On July 30, 2014, shortly after completing this autobiography, Robert Halmi, the prolific producer of television movies and miniseries, died at the age of 90. Hailed by Variety as “A Gulliver Among TV Movie Producers,” he had a hand in more than 200 long-form narrative television projects from 1989’s Lonesome Dove, starring Robert Duvall, to 2000’s “Don Quixote” starring John Lithgow. Filled with so much of the marquee talent of the past century, his life story—from fighting against the Nazis to becoming a photographer for Life and Sports Illustrated to his television work—is truly amazing. Robert Halmi was born in Hungary to a father who served as official photographer to the Vatican and the last Habsburg court. When the Nazis invaded, he fought in the resistance, and like many of his countrymen he was captured and condemned to death. But the advancing Red Army freed him before the Germans could carry out the execution. Seeing the dangers of the expanding Soviet empire, which also took hold of his homeland in a military dictatorship, he turned heel and joined the OSS to fight the fall of the Iron Curtain. In 1951, with $5 in his pocket and a Leica around his neck, he made his way to America. As a photographer for Life and Sports Illustrated, he again showcased his Bond-like talents for chasing adventure and cheating death by dangling from helicopters, hunting big game in Africa with dictators, blowing himself up, marooning himself on a glacier for three weeks, and even painting Marilyn Monroe’s naked body for a photo shoot. In the third act of his rollicking life, as a TV mogul, he received an astonishing 448 Emmy nods while befriending a Who’s Who of Hollywood and working with the great boldface actors of our time: Jimmy Cagney gave him his last performance. He chased George C. Scott (on a bender) through a hotel. Omar Sharif did the Twist for him. He watched Patrick Stewart nearly drown on the back of an animatronic whale, and Isabella Rossellini braved a herd of rampaging elephants for him. He has lived the American dream to the hilt. Analysing the decorative programmes of the most opulent European palaces of the time, Margaretha Rossholm Lagerlöf investigates how meaning was conveyed through display and visual effects. She explores the visual meaning inherent in the scheme of spatial relations; in effects of scale, perspective, lighting, figures' positions and postures; and in relations among image types. The analysis concerns the interrelations of various kinds of images in the ensembles; the relations between images and physical site; and the address to the beholder. Lagerlöf considers the visual impact of the imagery in conjunction with 'readable' or symbolically 'coded' meanings; thus, the study does not merely subject these decorations to formalist aesthetic principles. She shows the visual meaning generally to sustain the verbal or readable messages, but often in subtle ways, extending or elaborating the meaning. Occasionally, the visual meaning comes forth as an undercurrent or complication, deviating from the proclaimed and symbolic meaning. German occupation, the horror at the battlefield and the experience of exile, led to multiple narratives and artistic expressions by Belgian artists during and after the war. Belgian interbellum art is extremely vibrant and diverse. 14/18 - Rupture or Continuity takes a look at Belgian artistic life in the years around the First World War and how it was affected by this event. When the photographs depicting torture at Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison were released in 2004, U.S. politicians attributed the incident to a few bad apples in the American military, exonerated high-ranking members of the George W. The Cayuga are one of the original five nations of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, a powerful alliance of Native American tribes in the Northeast, inhabiting much of the land in what is now central New York State. When their nation was destroyed in the Sullivan–Clinton campaign of 1779, the Cayuga endured 200 years of displacement. As a result, relatively little is known about the location, organization, or ambience of their ancestral villages. Perched on a triangular finger of land against steep cliffs, the sixteenth-century village of Corey represents a rare source of knowledge about the Cayuga past, transforming our understanding of how this nation lived.In Corey Village and the Cayuga World, Rossen collects data from archaeological investigations of the Corey site, including artifacts that are often neglected, such as nonprojectile lithics and ground stone. Felice Rix-Ueno studied under Josef Hoffmann, a co-founder of the Wiener Werkstätte (1903–1932). Inspired by the Japanese formal language, she formed her own style, which was expressed in particularly imaginative fabric and wallpaper patterns, fashion and home accessories, and wall paintings. After her marriage to the Japanese architect Isaburo Ueno, she moved to Japan in 1926. There they created joint works that received much attention, such as the Star Bar in Kyoto, which was shown in the famous exhibition Modern Architecture in New York’s MoMa in 1932. Felice Rix-Ueno, who was already prominently represented in the successful MAK exhibition Women Artists of the Wiener Werkstätte, is given a substantial monographic treatment for the first time outside Japan with this catalog. Que le manuscrit trouve a Saragosse, tout a la fois recit initiatique, roman picaresque, gothique, fantastique ...soit une anthologie de tous les genres narratifs du XVIIIe siecle et qu'il porte de nombreuses traces des grands modeles que sont le Decameron, les Mille et une Nuits, le Don Quichotte, etc. qui en doutera? Mais, au-dela de cette intertextualite visible, le roman de Jean Potocki semble reserver plus d'une surprise, il semble cacher plus d'un emprunt inattendu, plus d'une parodie, sans parler des plagiats auxquels il s'est prete. La narration du Manuscrit trouve a Saragosse est a l'image du Guadalquivir qui traverse le site oA' se deroule le recit, disparaissant sous terre, refaisant surface et enrichissant ses rives du depot ininterrompu de sediments anciens charries par le fleuve depuis sa source. Remonter le fleuve, fouiller les terrains alluviaux du recit, etudier les differentes formes de copresence de deux ou de plusieurs textes dans le Manuscrit, tel etait l'objectif du Colloque International Jean Potocki qui s'est tenu a Louvain et a Anvers, du 30 mars au 1er avril 2000. La demarche entendait combiner les approches historique et typologique, l'etude detaillee de cas et les survols plus panoramiques, sans oublier le defi theorique que pose l'intertextualite potockienne au lecteur.

Embedded systems are everywhere in contemporary life and are supposed to make our lives more comfortable. In industry, embedded systems are used to manage and control complex systems (e.g. nuclear power plants, telecommunications and flight control) and they are also taking an important place in our daily activities (e.g. smartphones, security alarms and traffic lights). In the design of embedded systems, memory allocation and data assignment are among the main challenges that electronic designers have to face. In fact, they impact heavily on the main cost metrics (power consumption, performance and area) in electronic devices. Thus designers of embedded systems have to pay careful attention in order to minimize memory requirements, thus improving memory throughput and limiting the power consumption by the system’s memory. Electronic designers attempt to minimize memory requirements with the aim of lowering the overall system costs. A state of the art of optimization techniques for memory management and data assignment is presented in this book.
