Georgetown University Press Virtual Inequality: Beyond the Digital Divide
That there is a "digital divide" - which falls between those who have and can afford the latest in technological tools and those who have neither in our society - is indisputable. "Virtual Inequality" redefines the issue as it explores the cascades of that divide, which involve access, skill, political participation, as well as the obvious economics. Computer and Internet access are insufficient without the skill to use the technology, and economic opportunity and political participation provide primary justification for realizing that this inequality is a public problem and not simply a matter of private misfortune. Defying those who say the divide is growing smaller, this volume, based on a unique national survey that includes data from over 1800 respondents in low-income communities, shows otherwise. In addition to demonstrating why disparities persist in such areas as technological abilities, the survey also shows that the digitally disadvantaged often share many of the same beliefs as their more privileged counterparts. African-Americans, for instance, are even more positive in their attitudes toward technology than whites are in many respects, contrary to conventional wisdom. The rigorous research on which the conclusions are based is presented accessibly and in an easy-to-follow manner. Not content with analysis alone, nor the untangling of the complexities of policymaking, Virtual Inequality views the digital divide compassionately in its human dimensions and recommends a set of practical and common-sense policy strategies. Inequality, even in a virtual form this book reminds us, is unacceptable and a situation that society is compelled to address.

Bloomsbury Publishing PLC The Amsterdam Town Hall in Words and Images: Constructing Wonders
The most famous monument of the Dutch Golden Age is undoubtedly the Amsterdam Town Hall by architect Jacob van Campen inaugurated in 1655. Today we stand in awe confronted with the grand Classicist façade, the delightful horror of the sculptures in the Tribunal, and the magnificence of the huge Citizens’ Hall. In the period of its construction, many artists and writers tried to capture the overwhelming impact of the building by, among other comparisons, relating it to the ancient Wonders of the World and by stressing its splendour, riches, and impressive scale. In doing so, they constructed the Town Hall as the ultimate wonder, thus offering a silent, but very powerful testimony to the power and position of the City of Amsterdam and its rulers as equals of the other European regimes. To fully understand these mechanisms of power, this book relates the Town Hall to other, impressive buildings of the same period—the palace of the Louvre, Saint Peter’s Basilica, and Banqueting House—and their visual and textual representations. Thus, this book gives a broad audience of readers new insights into the agency of magnificent buildings. The Amsterdam Town Hall in Words and Images does not restrict itself to a national scope or a purely architectural analysis, but clarifies how artists and writers all over Europe presented buildings as wonders of the world. This book is pioneering in its analysis of seventeenth and eighteenth-century paintings, prints, drawings, poems, and travel accounts and offers a new understanding of how the wondrous character of these grand buildings was constructed.

NMSE - Publishing Ltd The Lewis Chessmen: Unmasked
The humorous and intricately designed Lewis Chessmen were discovered in 1831, one of the most significant archaeological discoveries ever made in Scotland. To preserve the hoard as intactly as possible in a public collection, the majority of the pieces were acquired by the British Museum where they are on permanent display. National Museums Scotland holds 11 pieces, again on permanent display. An exhibition of 30 pieces will tour Scotland from May 2010 to June 2011. This is the book produced to accompany the exhibition; it also stands alone. It looks at the mystery and intrigue surrounding the chessmen and their discovery, and shows how the characters reflected society at the time they were made.

Rutgers University Press Fight the Tower: Asian American Women Scholars’ Resistance and Renewal in the Academy
Asian American women scholars experience shockingly low rates of tenure and promotion because of the particular ways they are marginalized by the intersectionalities of race and gender in academia. Although Asian American studies critics have long since debunked the model minority myth that constructs Asian Americans as the ideal academic subject, university administrators still treat Asian American women in academia as though they will simply show up and shut up. Consequently, because silent complicity is expected, power holders will punish and oppress Asian American women severely when they question or critique the system. However, change is in the air. Fight the Tower is a continuation of the Fight the Tower movement, which supports women standing up for their rights to claim their earned place in academia and to work for positive change for all within academic institutions. The essays provide powerful portraits, reflections, and analyses of a population often rendered invisible by the lies that sustain intersectional injustices in order to operate an oppressive system.

The History Press Ltd The Landscape of Scotland: A Hidden History
From the top of the highest mountain to the bottom of the deepest peat bog, the landscape of Scotland bears the mark of the people who have lived and worked on the land for generations. It is the role of archaeology to recognise and interpret these traces, and in this book archaeological skills are brought to bear on the landscape of today. Beautiful scenery conceals traces of how the land was used by its communities — how the wealth of the land was extracted and exploited through mining and industry; how communities interacted through trade and warfare; and how religion and burial were performed. Each subject is explained using representative sites from all periods and all parts of the country, such as farmsteads, castles, Roman remains and standing stones. Each of the 150 sites bears an illustration and concise analysis using a broad range of physical and human factors. Wickham-Jones takes us to humps and bumps and piles of stone — the ordinary sites which explorers of the countryside come across every day. After reading this book a walk in the countryside will never be the same again.

De Gruyter 200 Jahre Frauenbad Baden: Baukultur und Kunstbetrieb in der Kurstadt Baden bei Wien / 200 Years of the Frauenbad: Building Culture and the Art Industry in the Spa Town of Baden near Vienna
