In this intellectually ambitious study, Elizabeth McKillen explores the significance of Wilsonian internationalism for workers and the influence of American labor in both shaping and undermining the foreign policies and war mobilization efforts of Woodrow Wilson's administration. McKillen highlights the major fault lines that emerged within labor circles as Wilson pursued his agenda in the context of Mexican and European revolutions, World War I, and the Versailles Peace Conference. McKillen's spotlight falls on the American Federation of Labor, whose leadership collaborated extensively with Wilson, assisting with propaganda, policy, and diplomacy. At the same time, other labor groups (and even sub-groups within the AFL) vehemently opposed Wilsonian internationalism. As McKillen shows, the choice to collaborate with or resist U.S. foreign policy remained an important one for labor throughout the twentieth century. Gladys Kalichini (born 1989 in Chingola, Zambia) is a contemporary visual artist and academic who investigates how women have been portrayed in relation to a dominant, colonial past. For example, the artist sheds light on instances in which women have been deleted from historical narratives and the collective memory of society. As a result of her extensive research, Kalichini has demonstrated that women were intentionally marginalised in the official representations of Zambia’s and Zimbabwe’s struggles for independence. In her elaborate multimedia installations and video art, which she often develops on the basis of research material and photos from archives, Kalichini highlights the omissions in the dominant representations of the two countries’ fight for freedom. She thus expands the history of their liberation struggle by drawing attention to the deletion and invisibility of female freedom fighters. By reminding the public of several of these women, Kalichini creates a diverse and complex alternative narrative of national independence.

Through a detailed reconstruction of American rearmament programs to Italy from the birth of NATO through the implementation of multilateral military assistance during the early 1950s, this research challenges the idea that the end of reconstruction marked a striking American shift from economic aid to defense policies. The case study of Italy highlights the impact that the defense procurement contracts had both on monetary stability and balance of payments, as well as the integration of the Italian products within the infant European trade area. This monograph demonstrates that through military assistance the United States promoted balance of payments equilibrium and expansionary domestic aggregate demand to lay down the foundation of a mass consumption market. Furthermore, this work makes the point that the Italian elites resorted to Italy’s industrial role as production source for NATO to both export manufactured products to the West European economies and import high added value instrumental goods from the U.S. markets.

Dominique Bondy, born in Zurich in 1946, created an extensive artistic oeuvre starting in her youth, and later also alongside her studies of comparative literature and Romance philology and her work as a psychoanalyst. It comprises pen and ink drawings and paintings in an art brut style, as well as surrealistic collages. In the 1980s and 1990s her works were displayed in several gallery exhibitions in Zurich. This is the first book to be published about Bondy’s art. The volume highlights what Bondy is concerned with in her artistic work: tracing her own life in order to find herself. The full colour plates are accompanied by Bondy’s own poems, which she writes in French, English, and German, some of which were written specifically for this book. Financial Gothic explores the persistent concern of American Gothic literature with finance – and finance as having always been a gothic phenomenon – from 1880 to the present day. The study reads Frankensteinian monsters, haunted houses, vampires and zombies in American literature and film as cultural responses to such twentieth and twenty-first century financial phenomena as the 1929 Wall Street Crash, post-war housing debt, financial deregulation, and the 2008 Credit Crunch. Consideration is also given to the pre-existing consensus on racial readings of American gothic, and how these interpretations of the slave trade can be expanded upon in conversation with their financial contexts.
