Liberty Fund Inc History as the Story of Liberty
Written in 1938 when the Western world had succumbed to the notion that history is a creature of blind force. A reviewer at the time noted the importance of Croce's belief that "the central trend in the evolution of man is the unfolding of new potentialities, and that the task of the historian is to discover and emphasise this trend: the story of liberty". As Croce himself writes, "Even in the darkest and crassest times liberty trembles in the lines of poets and affirms itself in the pages of thinkers and burns, solitary and magnificent, in some men who cannot be assimilated by the world around them." The first edition in English of HISTORY AS THE STORY OF LIBERTY appeared in London in 1941. The new Liberty Fund edition includes modest improvements to the translation by Folke Leander and arranged by Claes Ryn.

Liberty Fund Inc Natural Law: A Study in Legal & Social History & Philosophy
Originally published in German in 1936, The Natural Law is the first work to clarify the differences between traditional natural law as represented in the writings of Cicero, Aquinas, and Hooker and the revolutionary doctrines of natural rights espoused by Hobbes, Locke, and Rousseau. Beginning with the legacies of Greek and Roman life and thought, Rommen traces the natural law tradition to its displacement by legal positivism and concludes with what the author calls 'the reappearance' of natural law thought in more recent times. In the seven chapters Rommen explores 'The History of the Idea of Natural Law' and 'The Philosophy and Content of the Natural Law'. In his introduction, Russell Hittinger places Rommen's work in the context of contemporary debate on the relevance of natural law to philosophical inquiry and constitutional interpretation.

Liberty Fund Inc Collected Works of James M Buchanan: 20-Volume Set
In one of the major publishing endeavors of recent decades, The Collected Works of James M. Buchanan, the Nobel laureate in Economics in 1986, is being published in twenty volumes under the auspices of The Liberty Fund. The series will include ten monographs and all of the important journal articles, papers, and essays that Buchanan has produced in a distinguished career spanning more than a half-century. The monographs will appear in a new form and with the addition of indexes in those cases where no index or only a partial index was originally provided. In addition, each volume includes a foreword by one of the series' three editors, Professors Geoffrey Brennan, Hartmut Kliemt, and Robert D Tollison, each of whom is a distinguished economist in his own right. This is a series that no serious scholar of public choice theory, public economics, or contemporary political theory will want to be without. It is a series that will also appeal to the general student of liberty, for Buchanan has, perhaps more than any other contemporary scholar, helped us to view politics without the romantic gloss that characterizes so much normative political theory and that slips unthinkingly into so much popular commentary. Buchanan has been a resolute defender of 'the ideal of a society of free and responsible individuals,' and has been a painstaking analyst of the institutional structure that might best support such a society. Buchanan stands with von Mises, Hayek, Popper, and Friedman as one of the great twentieth-century scholars of liberty."

Liberty Fund Inc Conversation with Steve Pejovich DVD
In this interview with Bill Jersey, Pejovich reflects on his experience in economics. With insight and humour, he demonstrates the power that empirical cases can bring to bear on theoretical problems. Born in Belgrade under the tyranny of the Nazis, Pejovich spent his early life subject to the despotism of the Communists, but his life was transformed when he moved to the United States as an adult, where he experienced a government based on ideas of "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness". In the expansive state of Texas, where he made his new home, Pejovich realised his vision of economic freedom and culture vitality. Pejovich is one of the most dynamic and insightful theorists writing on property rights. Some of his books include "The Economics of Property Rights: Towards a Theory of Comparative Systems" and "Law, Informal Rules, and Economic Performance: The Case for Common Law". Approximate running time: 52 minutes.

Liberty Fund Inc Friedrich A Heyek DVD: Profiles in Liberty
Few individuals did more to both extend our understanding of the economic processes of the free society and alert us to the dangers inherent in the growth of political power than the Nobel laureate economist and social theorist Friedrich A Hayek. In over half a century of writing and teaching, he showed why National Socialism was the very antithesis of capitalism, why communism was an economic and political philosophy ultimately doomed to failure, and why we must be wary of government intervention if we are to preserve the freedoms that make democracy and prosperity possible. In a life that spanned almost the entire 20th century, Hayak went from being dismissed, ridiculed and ignored, to being acclaimed as perhaps the century's most significant social scientist and philosopher.
