Essays shedding fresh and significant light on Gower's poetry, major and minor, as it was received, read, and re-produced in England and in Iberia from the fourteenth to the twentieth centuries. John Gower's great poem, the Confessio Amantis, was the first work of English literature translated into any European language. Occasioned by the existence in Spain of fifteenth-century Portuguese and Spanish manuscripts ofthe Confessio, the nineteen essays brought together here represent new and original approaches to Gower's role in Anglo-Iberian literary relations. They include major studies of the palaeography of the Iberian manuscripts;of the ownership history of the Portuguese Confessio manuscript; of the glosses of Gowerian manuscripts; and of the manuscript of the Yale Confessio Amantis. Other essays situate the translations amidst Anglo-Spanish relations generally in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries; examine possible Spanish influences on Gower's writing; and speculate on possible providers of the Confessio to Philippa, daughter of John of Gaunt and queenof Portugal. Further chapters broaden the scope of the volume. A cross-cultural, comparative view on the transition from a predominant ‘culture of handwriting’ to a predominant ‘culture of print’ in the late medieval and early modern periods is provided here, combining research on Christian and Jewish European book culture with findings on East Asian manuscript and print culture. This approach highlights interactions and interdependencies instead of retracing a linear process from the manuscript book to its printed successor.While each chapter is written as a disciplinary study focused on one specific case from the respective field, the volume as a whole allows for transcultural perspectives. It thereby not only focusses on change, but also on simultaneities of manuscript and printing practices as well as on shifts in the perception of media, writing surfaces, and materials: Which values did writers, printers, and readers attribute to the handwritten and printed materials? Winner, LASA Mexico Humanities Book Prize, 2017Among the surviving documents from the colonial period in Mexico are rare Maya-authored manuscript compilations of Christian texts, translated and adapted into the Maya language and worldview, which were used to evangelize the local population. The Morely Manuscript is well known to scholars, and now The Teabo Manuscript introduces an additional example of what Mark Z. Christensen terms a Maya Christian copybook. Recently discovered in the archives of Brigham Young University, the Teabo Manuscript represents a Yucatecan Maya recounting of various aspects of Christian doctrine, including the creation of the world, the Fall of Adam and Eve, and the genealogy of Christ.The Teabo Manuscript presents the first English translation and analysis of this late colonial Maya-language document, a facsimile and transcription of which are also included in the book. Working through the manuscript section by section, Christensen makes a strong case for its native authorship, as well as its connections with other European and Maya religious texts, including the Morely Manuscript and the Books of Chilam Balam. He uses the Teabo Manuscript as a platform to explore various topics, such as the evangelization of the Maya, their literary compositions, and the aspects of Christianity that they deemed important enough to write about and preserve. This pioneering research offers important new insights into how the Maya negotiated their precontact intellectual traditions within a Spanish and Catholic colonial world.

The work of Ioannis Spatharakis on Byzantine manuscript painting has resulted in the standard corpus of dated illuminated Greek manuscripts, and an important survey of the history of the portrait in Byzantine manuscripts. His numerous papers published over the last twenty years have dealt with illuminated manuscripts from the era of Iconoclasm and the Macedonian Renaissance in the eighth and ninth centuries to the productions of the Palaeologan period in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. These are reproduced here, along with a number of papers on iconographical themes, and unpublished studies of wall paintings in Crete. One paper is translated from Greek, and a number of others are published here for the first time.

Persian Manuscripts & Paintings from the Berenson Collection presents an in-depth analysis of the little-known Persian manuscripts and paintings collected by the world-renowned art historian, art critic, and connoisseur Bernard Berenson (1865–1959). It focuses on three manuscripts and four detached folios (containing over fifty paintings) from the fourteenth to the seventeenth century produced in Iran and Central Asia (with a later addition in Mughal India).Fourteen essays are written by an international team of specialists in art history, Persian literature, statistics, conservation, and conservation science. This carto-bibliography of over 1300 Devon manuscript maps published in two volumes contains details not only of the maps themselves, extracted from 30 separate repositories in addition to some in private hands, but also biographical information on the surveyors who made them, over a third of whom have not appeared in any national cartographic reference book. There is also an Introduction which explains the significance of these, mostly large-scale, Devonmaps and how they fit into the national cartographic picture. The detailed list of maps is arranged in alphabetical order of parish for ease of reference and there is a Personal Names index. There are coloured illustrations of some of the maps and the two volumes will be presented in a slipcase. This collection which comprises 25 full manuscripts as well as one in Armeno-Turkish and two vellum fragments, though originating in the 18th century, is mainly constituted by small bequests and purchases from the last decades of the last, and early years of the current century. The detailed description of each codex afforded in the present volume expands on the Ellis' handlist of 1926, briefly listing the 16 items then in the library's possession. The holdings are representative of Armenian book arts in consisting of ecclesiastical genres designed for scriptural, liturgical and didactic functions. Their chronological range extends from the 13th to the 19th centuries, about half dating directly or indirectly to the 17th as commissions displaying merchant munificence. Equally diverse in provenance, approximately four fifths evince a modicum of illumination, while half exhibit a full programme of miniatures and marginal scenes.

A companion to the prize-winning exhibition catalogue "Illuminating the Renaissance: The Triumph of Flemish Manuscript Painting in Europe", edited by Thomas Kren and Scot McKendrick (2003), this volume contains thirteen selected papers presented at the two conferences held in conjunction with the exhibition. The first was organized by the Getty Museum, and the second was held at the Courtauld Institute of Art, under the sponsorship of the Courtauld and the Royal Academy of Arts. Added here is an essay by Margaret Scott on the role of dress in the Burgundian court. Chapters include Lorne Campbell's research into Rogier van der Weyden's work as an illuminator, Nancy Turner's investigation of materials and methods of painting in Flemish manuscripts, and trenchant commentary by Jonathan Alexander and James Marrow on the state of current research on Flemish illumination.
