Brigitte Kronauer's work prompted a leading German literary critic to call her 'the greatest German [female] fiction writer of our time'. Yet this uniquely sophisticated and appealing European literary voice - 'so austere and intelligent, so northern German and reticent, so complex and unpretentious, so seductive and misleading' - has until now remained virtually unknown in the English-speaking world. Fortunately, her multi-layered novels lend themselves beautifully to the selective approach employed in this anthology, each individual passage balancing and interpreting the others. These selections also illustrate Kronauer's literary development from an associative, highly structured early prose to the more chronologically narrated novels that the author herself sees not as a return to traditional storytelling but rather as a step in a new direction. The excerpts and stories in "Constructs of Desire" are annotated and preceded by critical introductions. They are supplemented by Kronauer's irreverent and ironic critical essays, her fictional and non-fictional reflections on the question 'What is Literature?'. The anthology concludes with an interview in which Kronauer considers the psychology of writing, the relationship of literature and reality, and the creation of her own imaginative literary universe.

This volume rethinks the opposition between "canonical" and "noncanonical," opting instead for understanding the literary canon as a segment of the larger archive of literature. Beyond what is presently regarded as canonical, this archive includes previously valued works that have been forgotten, as well as an indefinite supply of works as yet unconsecrated or unknown. Drawing from an eclectic array of theoretical sources - from Stanley Fish, Barbara Herrnstein Smith, John Guillory, Pierre Bourdieu, and Itamar Evan-Zohar to Michel Foucault and Jacques Derrida - Wadda C. Rios-Font re-reads nineteenth- and twentieth-century Spanish texts and authors who have tested the boundary between high and low culture, repositioning them within Spanish literary history and criticism. Through these self-reflexive readings, the book explores how the definition of literature has changed in more than two centuries of modernity in Spain, as well as the critical, institutional, and cultural negotiations behind this change. First and last, what moors poetry to society is speech: the speech that gets into writing. So why do most political readings of literature neglect this fundamental orientation? Mikhail Bakhtin never forgets the central role of utterance: his philosophy of literary dialogism is based on the idea of fighting out social issues on the ground of the spoken word. Accordingly, conflict-in-language is the theme of this book's introduction as if it is of the whole volume. In this book, Donald Wesling offers an organized reading of Bakhtin's thought, to achieve an account of why Bakhtin scamped poetry; and an account of how a poetics of utterance is a major achievemnt, if we employ in the dialogic reading of poetry many of the powerful terms Bakhtin developed for the novel. After an Introductory chapter that is polemical and pedagogical, this book contains chapters on the social poetics of dialect writing, on the clash of inner and outer speech, on the problem of rhythm, and on broader conflicts of types of discourse in English Romanticism and in the American 1990s. Examples come from England and Scotland, Russia, and the USA. Traveling with and beyond Bakhtin, this book extends to Anglo-American instances of communication theory with Russian origins.

Italian Americans made a significant contribution to Franklin D. Roosevelt's election to the White House in 1932 and to the victory of the Democratic Party in the four subsequent presidential contests. This volume offers a case study of their electoral behavior. Through a quantitative analysis of the Italian-American vote between 1916 and 1948, this study demonstrates that, contrary to conventional wisdom, the creation of a Democratic majority in the "Little Italy" of Providence foreran both Alfred Smith's 1928 candidacy for the presidency and the Depression of the 1930s. It also shows that Italian. Americans' Democratic allegiance survived World War II and underwent a revitalization in the postwar years. Political recognition and patronage were so central to Italian Americans' party choice that their support for the Democratic Party reached a climax when a member of the community, John Pastore, ran for governor on the Democratic ticket in the mid 1940s.
