"Classical works have for us become covered with the glassy armor of familiarity," wrote Victor Shklovsky in 1914. Here Kristin Thompson "defamiliarizes" the reader with eleven different films. Developing the technique formulated in her Eisenstein's Ivan the Terrible (Princeton, 1981), she clearly demonstrates the flexibility of the neoformalist approach. She argues that critics often use cut-and-dried methods and choose films that easily fit those methods. Neoformalism, on the other hand, encourages the critic to deal with each film differently and to modify his or her analytical assumptions continually. Thompson's analyses are thus refreshingly varied and revealing, ranging from an ordinary Hollywood film, Terror by Night, to such masterpieces as Late Spring and Lancelot du Lac. She proposes a formal historical way of dealing with realism, using Bicycle Thieves and The Rules of the Game as examples. Stage Fright and Laura provide cases in which the classical cinema defamiliarizes its own conventions by playing with audience expectations. Other chapters deal with Tati's Les Vacances de Monsieur Hulot and Play Time and Godard's Tout va bien and Sauve qui peut (la vie). Although neoformalist analysis is a rigorous, distinctive approach, it avoids extensive specialized vocabulary and esoteric concepts: the essays here can be read separately by those interested in the individual films. The book's overall purpose, however, goes beyond making these particular films more accessible and intriguing to propose new ways of looking at cinema as a whole.

Apres avoir rappele en guise d'introduction la maniere dont le christianisme a recu la philosophie paienne et l'apport de la theologie chretienne a la raison philosophique, le livre deploie en six grandes parties le panorama des relations entre la philosophie moderne et le christianisme. La premiere partie considere le rationalisme, l'empirisme et la crise des croyances au XVIIe siecle. La deuxieme partie traite du proces du christianisme dans la pensee du XVIIIe siecle, tandis que la troisieme presente la philosophie du christianisme developpee par Kant et par les grands philosophes idealistes (Fichte, Schelling, Hegel, Schleiermacher). La quatrieme partie expose la critique du christianisme elaboree, parmi d'autres, par les representants de la " gauche hegelienne " et par Nietzsche. La cinquieme partie lui repond en presentant les differentes formes de philosophie chretienne elaborees au XIXe siecle. La sixieme et derniere partie passe en revue le XXe siecle. Plus de 90 auteurs, qui ont faconne et alimentent encore la reflexion actuelle, sont ainsi " visites " selon la perspective choisie. Les conclusions degagent une typologie riche en contrastes. Comme le parcours propose le suggere, le rapport entre philosophie et christianisme implique une tension feconde, qu'aucune synthese n'est a meme d'extirper totalement.

Pourquoi parler du differend? Pourquoi employer ce terme comme modalite d'approche des deux 'uvres de Maurice Blanchot et d'Emmanuel Levinas? Il ne s'agit pas ici de nier leur rapport d'amitie, mais il faut inverser l'argument : c'est grace a leur amitie qu'il devient possible d'articuler les termes dans lesquels s'exprime la condition du differend. Qu'en est-il de cette condition? L'argumentation se developpe a partir de la these suivante : pour pouvoir expliquer la persistance du differend, il n'est pas possible de faire evacuer la question de la subjectivite dans l'evenement du langage. D'oA' l'enjeu d'une confrontation des rapports heterogenes de Blanchot et Levinas a cette impossibilite. Les deux auteurs nous permettent d'expliciter le differend a partir d'un contexte phenomenologique. Mais, leurs approches divergentes de l'evenement du langage menent vers un (non-)lieu decisif oA' le pouvoir du langage est en cause et qui rompt aussi avec la seule description phenomenologique. C'est ainsi, en suivant ce double mouvement qui va au-dela du descriptif, que le lecteur est aux prises avec un ecart entre les deux amis qui persiste dans leurs ecrits. La, pourtant, se passe aussi l'essentiel : l'avenement - avant meme qu'il soit question de l'etre - d'une modification du rapport a soi. En retracant l'histoire de cet ecart qui se dissimule dans le rapport entre Blanchot et Levinas, cette etude veut a la fois sonder son origine, interroger son insistance et en degager les termes qui exposent le differend comme une condition qui nous concerne.

Williamsburg VA A majority of the fiction composed in England in the second half of the sixteenth century was set inthe past. All the major prose writers of the period (Thomas Lodge, Sir Philip Sidney, Thomas Nashe, Thomas Deloney, Robert Greene) produced historical fiction, with settings ranging from the ancient world (as in Sidney's Arcadia) to the time of Henry VIII (in Nashe's The Unfortunate Traveller). Yet while studies of the historical drama of the period abound, the historical bias of prose fiction has so far escaped any sort of sustained critical consideration. Renaissance Historical Fiction is the first book-length study of this important topic. It argues for the complex ways in which these prose fictions engage with an idea of the past, and of their power to destabilize some of our dominant models for understanding the period of 'the Renaissance'. The wide range of texts discussed includes Lodge's Robin the Devil; Greene's Ciceronis Amor; John Lyly's Euphues and his England; and the anonymous Famous History of Friar Bacon. Despite some field research our knowledge of the sacred among the Mumuye is still embryonic. In all these acephalic groups of a binary and antinomic nature, the complex va constitutes an extremely varied semantic field in which certain aspects are accentuated depending on the circumstances. Religious power is linked to the strength contained in sacred objects, of which only the elders are the guardians. Moreover, this gerontocracy relies on a system of initiatory stages which one must pass to have access to the status of 'religious leader'. Geographically isolated, the Mumuye were able to resist the attacks of the Muslim invaders, the British colonial authority and the activities of the different Christian missions for a long time. As a result the Mumuye practised woodcarving until the beginning of our century. In 1970 Philip Fry published his essay on the statuary of the Mumuye of which the analysis of the endogenous network has so far lost nothing of its value. Basing himself on in situ observations, Jan Strybol attempted to analyse the exogenous network of this woodcarving. Thus he was able to document about forty figures and some masks and additionally to identify more than twenty-five Mumuye artists as well as a specific type of sculpture as being confined to the Mumuye Kpugbong group. During and after the Biafran war, hundreds of Mumuye sculptures were collected. Based on information gathered between 1970 and 1993 the author has demonstrated that a certain number of these works are not Mumuye but must be attributed to relic groups scattered in Mumuye territory.

Quant aux declarations des interesses eux-memes -- lesdits ecrivains "romantiques" --, elles ne s'accordent guere et apparaissent parfois tout a fait contradictoires.Peut-on toutefois degager d'eventuelles lignes de force, une structure latente voire un air de famille dans le chaos apparent de la production litteraire de l'epoque? Le present ouvrage en fait le pari. Le debut du XIXe siecle se caracterise, en France, par la convergence d'une remise a l'honneur de Platon et d'un mode de pensee "platonicien", qui se rencontre a des degres divers chez tous les ecrivains. The study of the history of Safavid Iran has been rather neglected, although this situation is rapidly changing. This book deals with an important and very traumatic experience in the history of Iran, the fall of the Safavid dynasty, brought about by rebellious Afghans from Kandahar. The Safavids had governed Iran for 220 years by the fall of Isfahan in 1722, and such was their charisma that their legitimacy outlasted their reign. Subsequent rulers both established an administration modeled after that of the Safavids as well tried to bolster the legitimacy of their own regime by linking their dynasty to that of the Safavids. This book is entirely based upon the unpublished materials in the archives of the Dutch East Indies Company (VOC), and, in addition to the unabridged translation of the Diary of the Siege of Isfahan, it is a summary of all available information in those archives on the political and military situation in Iran between 1715 and 1730. Because of the nature of the materials offered here (mostly eye-witness accounts) as well as the geographical spread of the points of observation (Isfahan, Kerman, Bandar 'Abbas, Shiraz) much of the information offered here is of a unique nature. There are no other contemporary sources available, either published or unpublished, Persian or foreign, that have the same level of detail and the spread of geographical vantage points over the same period. An earlier version of this book was published in 1987 in Persian under the title Bar Oftadan-e Safaviyan va Bar Amadan-e Mahmud Afghan, though lacking most of the explanatory notes that embellish this publication in English.

La famille linguistique du meroitique, la langue du royaume pharaonique de Meroe, au Soudan, a ete depuis plus d'un siecle l'objet de debats passionnes. Etait-elle couchitique, nilo-saharienne ou isolee comme le sumerien et l'etrusque? Aucune reponse certaine ne pouvait etre apportee tant que la langue n'etait pas mieux connue, et notamment son vocabulaire fondamental, le plus utile pour reperer une filiation linguistique. Tout au plus savait-on que la piste couchitique (ou chamito-semitique en general) etait tres peu vraisemblable et la piste nilo-saharienne la plus plausible. La premiere partie de cet ouvrage est consacree a l'accroissement du lexique de base au moyen d'une etude philologique serree des textes meroitiques. Dans un second temps, ces donnees font l'objet d'une "comparaison de masse" destinee a reperer au sein du nilo-saharien le groupe ou les ressemblances sont les plus nombreuses. Il s'agit d'une branche nouvelle, nommee "soudanique oriental nord" (SON), qui comprend quatre ensembles de langues ou de dialectes: le nubien, le nara, le taman et le nyima, tous situes sur une region du Sahel qui va du Tchad a l'Erythree. Dans la partie suivante, la methode comparative classique est utilisee pour reconstruire le proto-nubien, puis, en amont, le proto-SON. Dans la derniere partie, l'auteur demontre que les donnees meroitiques s'integrent parfaitement dans cet ensemble, et etend les correspondances au niveau de la phonologie et de la morphologie. Un scenario historique est enfin propose pour determiner l'origine geographique du proto-SON et les modalites de sa dispersion, liee aux changements climatiques en Afrique durant la periode neolithique. Le choix de l’÷uvre intégrale de Plaute a été dicté par l’archaïsme de sa langue et par le registre de langue familière qui ajoute des connotations spécifiques aux emplois des pronoms-adjectifs et des adverbes déictiques. Une analyse approfondie de l’ensemble de leurs emplois a permis un affinement de leur sens et, par là même, un affinement de leur traduction, qui, si elle est mécanique, laisse échapper d’importants effets de sens. L’analyse proposée s’appuie en premier lieu sur les faits de grammaire mais aussi sur l’interprétation scénique du texte; cette interprétation permet de dégager des nuances importantes dont il faut rendre compte dans une approche discursive. L’étude des emplois anaphoriques des pronoms-adjectifs montre que is est un authentique anaphorique, doté d’une valeur neutre. Ce pronom sert aussi à assurer la continuité narrative dans le passé. En revanche, hic est employé pour relier le présent au passé dans le déroulement du récit. Hic partage avec ille une fonction «résomptive»: celle de resumed topic. Ille sert aussi à marquer la focalisation contrastive. Les emplois cataphoriques de is, hic, iste, ille introduisent des phrases, des propositions relatives avec lesquelles ils sont en corrélation, des complétives ou encore des propositions exprimant soit la temporalité soit la restriction. Le rôle de ces pronoms-adjectifs est alors d’attirer l’attention de l’interlocuteur sur ce que le locuteur va énoncer. Les emplois déictiques de hic, iste, ille, qui sont des symboles indexicaux incomplets, confirment leur assignation traditionnelle aux "personnes grammaticales" et leur valeur en rapport direct avec les rôles discursifs.

Kant le décrit comme un appel, à défaut de tout à fait le nommer ainsi, l’interprétant ensuite tout à la fois comme ce qui vient de nous (comme si le sujet éthique se donnait à lui-même la loi) et ce qui vient à nous (comme si ce même sujet répondait à la loi venue de Dieu). Prendre au sérieux cette dualité suppose que le chantier kantien de l’éthique ouvre alors sur un horizon théologique. Kant ouvre un chantier que la phénoménologie historique, celle qui naît avec Husserl et Heidegger, répète. Comme toute vraie répétition, celle-ci ne va pas sans critique ni déplacement (Merleau-Ponty, Scheler, Jonas), mais le motif de l’appel est bel et bien là. «Nous avons été appelés» - la trace laissée en nous par cet appel est trop forte pour que le moindre doute puisse encore s’élever à son propos, mais la question vient aussitôt: quelle voix s’est fait entendre? Quel appel nous surprend et nous soulève? Appel de l’être (Martin Heidegger), appel de l’Autre (Emmanuel Levinas) ou appel de la vie (Michel Henry)? Nous avons été appelés, affectés, blessés – ce qui brise la vie lui appartient encore, mais qu’est-ce donc qui la brise et la relève? La dialectique est une des notions les plus recurrentes de la tradition philosophique, que les differents siecles invoquent, soit pour s'en reclamer, soit pour s'en distancier. Chez Platon, elle conquiert ses lettres de noblesse en etant promue au statut de science supreme, mais chez Aristote, elle redevient ce qu'elle etait avant la Republique, un art du dialogue, de la decouverte a tatons de la verite, une methode de raisonnement sur des premisses simplement probables, qui fraie la voie a la saisie de la verite, qui defend les principes du savoir contre les objections possibles mais qui ne peut pretendre au statut apodictique de la science. Ce differend originaire sur le statut et la portee va se diffracter au cours de l'histoire en une multiplicite impressionnante de figures qui sont autant de sources d'inspiration ou de repoussoirs pour les productions philosophiques ulterieures. Mais par dela les differences et les oppositions dans la conception de la dialectique, n'y a-t-il pas moyen de degager des lignes de convergence, des caracteristiques communes ? C'est le pari qu'ont tente les participants d'un colloque tenu a Louvain-la-Neuve en 2007, consacre a la dialectique. Le present volume reprend une serie de contributions qui y ont ete presentees et discutees. Les livres de Samuel (1 S 1 – 1 R 2)se présentent comme un récit à prétention historiographique. Ils relatent le siècle d’histoire qui va de la naissance de Samuel à la mort de David. Pour raconter cette longue période dans la durée relativement brève du récit, le narrateur ne cesse d’opérer des choix temporels d’ordre divers. Le présent ouvrage s’intéresse à la construction du temps du récit. Il s’agit de voir comment cette construction vise non seulement à rendre compte du cours de l’histoire mais surtout à le qualifier. En effet, l’ensemble des choix temporels semble conduit par un souci mimétique mais il constitue surtout un propos implicite sur la signification des événements rapportés. Les formes et les modes de l’articulation entre le temps du récit et le temps de l’histoire se révèlent donc être un lieu privilégié pour appréhender la visée du projet historiographique de 1 S 1 – 1 R 2. Les composantes les plus significatives de cette articulation sont les indications calendaires qui balisent la narration, la prééminence donnée à l’unité du jour, l’organisation de séquences de jours, la conjugaison des ressources temporelles propres aux trois genres littéraires présents en 1 S 1 – 1 R 2: le récit, l’oracle prophétique et le poème lyrique. Chacun des cinq livres du Psautier s’est révélé composé et bien composé. Au niveau de l’ensemble du Livre des Louanges, il en va de même. Les procédures de l’analyse rhétorique biblique ont permis de le montrer, malgré les lacunes d’une recherche qui ne pouvait guère s’appuyer sur beaucoup de travaux antérieurs. Selon la tradition, les cinq livres du Psautier correspondent aux cinq livres de la Tora. Dans la Tora, Dieu parle à l’homme, par les merveilles qu’il accomplit en sa faveur, puis par la loi qu’il lui donne ; ainsi il l’éduque, il l’« enseigne », selon le sens du mot tôrâ. Dans le Psautier, c’est l’homme qui parle à Dieu, qui lui dit ses malheurs, qui l’appelle au secours, qui le loue aussi pour son salut. Dans l’oppression, le psalmiste revendique quelquefois son innocence, mais Dieu lui fait prendre conscience de son péché. Alors, il confesse ses fautes et demande pardon. Enfin et surtout il se rend compte qu’il est incapable de comprendre la loi, de voir le chemin qui conduit à la vie. Et il demande, avec insistance, d’en être instruit. Dès le Premier livre, le psalmiste supplie : « Tes chemins, Yhwh, fais-moi connaitre, tes sentiers apprends-moi ! » (Ps 25,4). Et il le répètera à l’envi dans l’immense psaume de la Loi : « Instruis-moi, Yhwh, du chemin de tes décrets [...] Fais-moi comprendre et je garderai ta loi » (Ps 119,33-34). Ainsi la loi gravée sur la pierre, sera écrite sur son cœur de chair. C’est là le point de contact le plus visible entre la Tora et le Psautier. Moïse disait : « Écoute, Israël, les lois et les coutumes que je prononce aujourd’hui à vos oreilles » (Dt 5,1) et Dieu dit au cœur du Psautier : « Écoute, mon peuple, et je t’avertis, Israël, si tu m’écoutais... » (Ps 81,9). Incapable d’écouter et de comprendre, Israël demande donc d’être instruit de la Tora. Le Psautier est le remède guérissant de la surdité qui empêche d’entendre la Parole de Dieu, de la cécité qui empêche de voir le chemin de la vie. Ainsi commence à prendre corps la nouvelle alliance annoncée par les prophètes de l’exil, quand Dieu donnera à l’homme un cœur de chair sur lequel il écrira sa loi.
