Throughout, the design methods are illustrated by calculations in accordance with the Eurocode for composite structures, EN 1994, Part 1-1, ‘General rules and rules for buildings’ and Part 1-2, ‘Structural fire design’, and their cross-references to ENs 1990 to 1993. The methods are stated and explained, so that no reference to Eurocodes is needed. The use of Eurocodes has been required in the UK since 2010 for building and bridge structures that are publicly funded. Their first major revision began in 2015, with the new versions due in the early 2020s. Both authors are involved in the work on Eurocode 4. The history of Peebles spans nine centuries, so it is inevitable that there is a wealth of history in which to delve for nuggets of interest. David I of Scotland used to visit Peebles Castle in the late 1100s to hunt, the parish church of St Andrew was founded in 1195, and the town was made into a royal burgh by David II in 1367. The River Tweed did not have a bridge at Peebles until 1467, just a few years after burgh records were started during the reign of James II. In the sixteenth century, the town was surrounded by a wall with defensive bastel houses, remains of which can still be seen. The social history changed dramatically with the arrival of the railways in the nineteenth century as woollen mills took advantage of both the fast flow of the river and easy transportation of goods; the trains also brought flocks of tourists to the picturesque setting, establishing Peebles as a holiday location. Traces of the town’s fascinating history are visible to the enquiring eye and local author Liz Hanson endeavours to uncover some of the secrets of Peebles.

The Rhine was crossed in March 1945, first by the seizure of the railway bridge at Remagen and then by the combined American, British and Canadian ground and airborne operation codenamed Varsity. In the closing stages of the War, the western allies pushed remorselessly in the heart of Germany. Shocking evidence of Nazi atrocities was uncovered. Berlin fell to the Russians in early May and the Allies met up on the River Elbe. In the chaos that followed, Germany was divided into four zones of occupation. The immediate tasks were ensuring the survival of the civilian population, establishing law and order, and the capture of war criminals. Many audacious and improbable schemes for new railways were dreamed up in the nineteenth century, but surely none matched the plan to link the Cromford Canal with the Peak Forest Canal at Whaley Bridge in Derbyshire using a series of rope-worked inclines. This railway oddity opened in 1831 and somehow survived almost unnoticed until 1967, when there was a flurry of publicity when it closed. The line weaved its way through some of the finest scenery in England and was dotted with crazy gradients and whiplash curves. Here was the steepest normal railway in Britain and the only place where you could see a gradient post saying ‘1 in 8.’ It also used steam right to the end, by which time it had outlived many more illustrious undertakings. John Evans visited the line many times in its later years, his camera nearly always loaded with priceless colour film. His pictures are published here for the first time, giving a unique view of a railway which was full of intrigue and history. Popular today with walkers and cyclists, the route of the Cromford & High Peak Railway refuses to die.
