In Building Theory in Political Communication, Gadi Wolfsfeld, Tamir Sheafer, and Scott Althaus present the first generalizable conceptual framework for political communication that is also falsifiable, explaining how media performance contributes to successful political performance across nations, regime types, and information systems. The book identifies three tensions in the current literature that have thus far prevented a general theory of political communication. Their main application as a method for the stereoselective synthesis of homoallylic alcohols by allyl-transfer to carbonyl compounds is essentially unmatched. In this process, a new carbon-carbon bond is formed, and up to two new stereogenic centers are created in a predictably controlled manner. Highly effective and general enantioselective variants are available, with countless applications in the total syntheses of polyacetate and polypropionate natural products. Furthermore, the residual allylic unit can be manipulated through a number of different transformations such as oxidative cleavage, olefin metathesis, hydrometalations, and many others. The discovery of Lewis and Brønsted acid catalyzed manifolds recently, has opened new doors for further development of this important reaction. This book provides an up-to-date, comprehensive survey of the literature of this rich chemistry as it pertains to organic synthesis. Consistent with the goal of Organic Reactions, the content and presentation emphasize the preparative aspects of the reactions, giving considerable attention to the scope and limitations of the individual transformations along with detailed experimental procedures. Inspired by recent studies of materiality and infrastructures, we introduce “residual materialism” as a framework for attending to the socio-material properties of chemicals and their world-making powers. Tracking residues through time, space, and understanding helps us see how the past has been built into our present chemical environments and future-oriented regulatory systems, why contaminants seem to always evade control, and why the Anthropocene is as inextricably harnessed to the synthesis of carbon into new molecules as it is driven by carbon’s combustion.

The early 21st century has not been kind to California's reputation for good government. But the Golden State's governance flaws reflect worrisome national trends with origins in the 1970s and 1980s. Growing voter distrust with government, a demand for services but not taxes to pay for them, a sharp decline in enlightened leadership and effective civic watchdogs, and dysfunctional political institutions have all contributed to the current governance malaise. Until recently, San Diego, California—America's 8th largest city—seemed immune to such systematic governance disorders. This sunny beach town entered the 1990s proclaiming to be "America's Finest City," but in a few short years its reputation went from "Futureville" to "Enron-by-the-Sea." In this eye-opening and telling narrative, Steven P. Erie, Vladimir Kogan, and Scott A. MacKenzie mix policy analysis, political theory, and history to explore and explain the unintended but largely predictable failures of governance in San Diego. Colorectal Surgery has continued to experience tremendous growth in both the community and academic settings over the past few years.
