The Asset Recovery Handbook: A Guide for Practitioners has been updated in 2020 by the Stolen Asset Recovery (StAR) initiative, a joint initiative of the United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime and the World Bank focused on encouraging and facilitating a more systematic and timely return of stolen assets. Designed as a how-to manual, the handbook guides practitioners as they grapple with the strategic, organizational, investigative, and legal challenges of recovering assets that have been stolen by corrupt leaders and hidden abroad. It provides common approaches to recovering stolen assets located in foreign jurisdictions, identifies the challenges that practitioners are likely to encounter, and introduces good practices. Much of the terrain in American studies has been transformed in recent years by a fundamental reconsideration of the relationship among capitalism, the nation-state, and human migration. Nation and Migration focuses on this disciplinary shift and offers a contemporary understanding of the transnational circulation of migrants and immigrants in a global economy. In the first section, contributors evaluate issues of citizenship and state power, examining the mechanisms through which immigrants are regulated, restricted, and disciplined by state institutions and agents. The next section presents differing perspectives on transnationalism. This discussion is followed by essays that address how migrants and migrant communities experience their tenuous positions. Nouvelle edition, entierement revue, d'un manuel destine aux etudiants et aux lecteurs cultives desireux de s'initier a la phonetique et a l'histoire de la prononciation du francais, cet ouvrage contient deux grandes parties: une initiation a la phonetique generale et un panorama de la phonetique historique du francais. Les notions de phonetique generale se basent surtout sur l'observation du francais contemporain. Elles ont pour but de faire prendre conscience au lecteur francophone, habitue a accorder une attention toute particuliere a la forme ecrite des messages, que toute langue est d'abord un phenomene oral. Un bref apercu de phonetique acoustique est suivi d'une longue description des mecanismes articulatoires mis en oeuvre pour la production des sons qui composent les langues et des modifications que subissent ces sons lorsqu'ils sont inseres dans la chaine parlee. Si la forme ecrite des messages des locuteurs francophones est presque toujours unique, il en va tout autrement de leur forme orale et les memes enonces se trouvent realises dans des prononciations bien differentes dans les diverses regions de la francophonie. Des lors se pose un probleme de norme: quelle prononciation recommander ou admettre? C'est a la phonetique normative (ou orthoepie) qu'il revient de repondre a cette question et de proposer des conseils portant sur des points plus particuliers, comme la prononciation des nnoms propres, la liaison ou l'elision du "e muet". L'expose de cette partie normative est specialement attentive aux principales caracteristiques du francais de Wallonie et de Bruxelles. Les graphies du francais, souvent fort complexes, gardent le temoignage de prononciations anciennes et montrent que les sons evoluent. Ainsi les voyelles contenues dans beau, fleur, main, soeur ...etaient autrefois des sons complexes; la liaison en t que l'on fait apres l'adjectif grand rapelle q'au moyen age, la consonne finale cet adjectif etait une sourde (grant). La phonetique historique (une des premieres disciplines elaborees par la linguistique scientifique) a etabli que ces evolutions ne se sont pas faites de maniere aleatoire. La derniere partie du manuel decrit ces evolutions, du latin au francais, et montre comment s'est constitue le phonetisme du francais contemporain. Elle insiste particulierement sur les traits qui distinguent le francais des autres langues romanes et ca et la, elle releve les phenomenes qui sont responsables de la differentiation des dialectes de la Wallonie. L'ouvrage est enrichi de nombreuses illustrations qui rendent les exposes plus concrets et il se termine par trois index: un index analytique contenant tous les termes techniques utilises, un index des etynoms et un index des mots francais cites dans la partie historique.

The Oise-Aisne American Cemetery is the last resting place of 6,012 American soldiers who died fighting in a small portion of Northern France during the First World War. The impressive cemetery is divided into four plots marked A to D. However, few visitors are aware that across the road, behind the immaculate fa ade of the superintendent's office, unmarked and completely surrounded by impassable shrubbery, is Plot E, a semi-secret fifth plot that contains the bodies of ninety-four American soldiers. These were men who were executed for crimes committed in the European Theatre of Operations during and just after the Second World War. Originally, the men whose death sentences were carried out were buried near the sites of their executions in locations as far afield as England, France, Belgium, Germany, Italy, and Algeria. A number of the men were executed in the grounds of Shepton Mallet prison in Somerset - the majority of whom were hanged in the execution block, with two being shot by a firing squad in the prison yard. The executioner at most of the hangings was Thomas William Pierrepoint, assisted mainly by his more-famous nephew Albert Pierrepoint. Then, in 1949, under a veil of secrecy, the plot of shame', as it has become known, was established in France. The site does not exist on maps of the cemetery and it is not mentioned on the American Battle Monuments Commission's website. Visits to Plot E are not encouraged. Indeed, public access is difficult because the area is concealed, surrounded by bushes, and is closed to visitors. No US flag is permitted to fly over the plot and the graves themselves have no names, just small, simple stones the size of index cards that are differentiated only by reference numbers. Even underground the dishonoured are set apart, with each body being positioned with its back to the main cemetery. In The Plot of Shame, the historian Paul Johnson uncovers the history of Plot E and the terrible stories of wartime crime linked to it.

In this study, contributors focus on informal economies such as health care, domestic work, street vending, and the garment industry, where displaced and undocumented women are more likely to work. Because such informal labor markets are unregulated, many of these workers face abusive working conditions that are not reported for fear of job loss or deportation. In examining the complex dynamics of how immigrant women navigate political and economic uncertainties, this collection highlights the important role of citizenship status in defining immigrant women's opportunities, wages, and labor conditions.
