Plural Publishing Inc IEP Goal Writing for Speech-Language Pathologists: Utilizing State Standards
IEP Goal Writing for Speech-Language Pathologists: Utilizing State Standards, Second Edition familiarizes the speech-language pathologist (SLP) with specific Early Learning Standards (ELS) and Common Core State Standards (CCSS) as well as the speech-language skills necessary for students to be successful with the school curriculum. It also describes how to write defensible Individualized Education Plan (IEP) goals that are related to the ELS and CCSS. SLPs work through a set of steps to determine a student's speech-language needs. First, an SLP needs to determine what speech-language skills are necessary for mastery of specific standards. Then, the SLP determines what prerequisite skills are involved for each targeted speech-language skill. Finally, there is a determination of which Steps to Mastery need to be followed. It is through this process that an SLP and team of professionals can appropriately develop interventions and an effective IEP. The text takes an in-depth look at the following speech-language areas: vocabulary, questions, narrative skills/summarize, compare and contrast, main idea and details, critical thinking, pragmatics, syntax and morphology, and articulation and phonological processes. These areas were selected because they are the most commonly addressed skills of intervention for students aged three to twenty-one with all levels of functioning. For each listed area, the text analyzes the prerequisite skills and the corresponding steps to mastery. It provides a unique, step-by-step process for transforming the steps to mastery into defensible IEP goals. The key is to remember that the goal must be understandable, doable, measurable, and achievable. This text provides clear guidelines of quantifiable building blocks to achieve specific goals defined by the student's IEP. School-based SLPs are instrumental in helping students develop speech and language skills essential for mastery of the curriculum and standards. All SLPs working with school-aged children in public schools, private practice, or outpatient clinics will benefit from the information in this text. New to the Second Edition Material on measuring progress including 10 language checklists and 5 performance updates. Goal writing case studies for four students of different ages and skill levels. A thoroughly updated chapter on writing goals with up-to-date examples Revised Prerequisite Skills and Steps to Mastery to reflect the current state of research. Expanded focus on evidence-based practice. A PluralPlus companion website containing printable forms and explanatory videos.

Plural Publishing Inc The Singing Teacher's Guide to Transgender Voices
"The Singing Teacher's Guide to Transgender Voices'' is a unique resource developed for singing teachers and their students to aid in the development of a successful, culturally competent voice pedagogy by presenting information about training and repertoire specifically tailored for transgender and gender nonconforming singers. The world of singing is heavily gendered, from choral part divisi by "men" and "women," to the Fach system of "male" and "female" voices, to casting roles based on gender, to choosing pronouns for pop, rock, and other genres. Because many of the current systems for singing education are so firmly anchored in gender binary systems, transgender and gender nonconforming singers are often forced into groups with which they feel they don't belong. This resource equips teachers with a sympathetic perspective on these unique struggles and with the knowledge and resources needed to guide students to a healthy, joyful, and safe singing life. It helps the academic community understand the needs of transgender students through student narratives and suggestions for navigating academic procedures and policies. ''The Singing Teacher's Guide to Transgender Voices'' is the first book of its kind to provide thorough, organized information on the training of trans singers for music educators in both the academic and independent teaching realms.

Plural Publishing Inc Binaural Interference: A Guide for Audiologists
Binaural interference occurs when the speech input to one ear interferes with the input to the other ear during binaural stimulation. The first report on binaural interference twenty-five years ago demonstrated that some individuals, particularly older individuals, perform less well with binaural than monaural stimulation. Binaural interference is relevant to every audiologist because it may impact the successful use of binaural hearing aids. This exciting new book, written by two highly respected audiologists, first traces the history of research into binaural interference, then reviews the evidence, both direct and indirect, supporting its reality. This is followed by a discussion of the possible causes of the phenomenon, and in-depth analysis of four illustrative cases. Next, a systematic approach to the clinical detection, evaluation and amelioration of individuals who exhibit binaural interference is outlined. This is followed by suggestions on how to improve techniques for evaluation of the binaural advantage in general, and improved detection of the disorder in particular. The book ends with recommendations for future directions. Given the adverse impact of binaural interference on auditory function, and its occurrence in a significant subset of the population with hearing loss, research on binaural interference only recently has begun to flourish. Adapting audiological clinical practice to identify, assess, and manage individuals with binaural interference is not yet widespread. The authors hope that the book will provide impetus for pursuing further research and encouraging audiologists to explore the possibility of binaural interference when patient complaints suggest it. The book is intended for practicing clinical audiologists, audiology students, and anyone interested in pursuing serious research on this interesting phenomenon.

Plural Publishing Inc Videofluoroscopy: A Multidisciplinary Team Approach
Videofluoroscopy: A Multidisciplinary Team Approach is a timely volume that helps to meet the growing need for multidisciplinary team knowledge of the videofluoroscopic swallowing study (VFSS). Clinicians increasingly rely on the objective examination of swallowing to create a baseline as part of the patient's diagnosis and treatment. Much of the current literature focuses on the speech and language therapist working alongside a radiologist. However, the radiologist is increasingly no longer involved in the investigation, highlighting the need to amplify the multidisciplinary team knowledge of the procedure. Increasing demand for new and established diagnostic and interventional procedures has encouraged innovative models of service delivery, resulting in an extended range of health professionals crossing the traditional practice boundaries. In particular, the radiographers who complete the examination, along with the speech and language therapists, need to learn more about the swallowing function. Likewise, it is essential that speech and language therapists increase their knowledge base on the radiographic aspects of the examination.Authored by numerous highly regarded scholars, Videofluoroscopy: A Multidisciplinary Team Approach serves as a crucial resource to help all members of the videofluoroscopy service team acquire the knowledge and skills they require. The book is divided into two parts: Part One provides an overview of swallowing and an introduction to the VFSS. Part Two covers various clinical indications for VFSS, including stroke, neuromuscular conditions, pediatric disorders, learning disabilities, dementia, and head and neck cancers.

Plural Publishing Inc Hearing: Anatomy, Physiology, and Disorders of the Auditory System
Hearing: Anatomy, Physiology and Disorders of the Auditory System, Third Edition, provides detailed information about the anatomy and physiology of the entire auditory system and describes important aspects of disorders of the middle ear, the cochlea, and the nervous system in a comprehensive manner. It has become apparent that the function of the ear affects the function of the auditory nervous system, and that pathologies of the peripheral parts of the auditory system can affect the function of the nervous system, and vice versa. The classical separation of the auditory system in peripheral and central parts is therefore no longer valid. This book integrates descriptions of disorders of the ear and the nervous system and provides a comprehensive coverage of anatomy and physiology of the entire auditory system; it also introduces the role of neural plasticity in creating symptoms of diseases of hearing such as tinnitus, hyperacusis and phonophobia. A separate chapter discuses cochlear and auditory brainstem implants.

Plural Publishing Inc Cutaneous Malignancy of the Head and Neck: A Multidisciplinary Approach
Skin cancer, including melanoma and nonmelanoma cancers, is the most common malignancy in the United States and constitutes an evolving global epidemic. Although the majority of these lesions occur on the head and neck, the treatment of skin cancer crosses numerous medical and surgical specialties. Unfortunately, the preponderance of treatment occurs in a disjointed fashion as dermatologists, surgeons, primary care providers, and radiation oncologists endeavor to cure patients within their own spheres. Consequently, aggressive malignancies are often identified late, and patient outcomes are unsatisfactory, with potentially avoidable morbidity and mortality. Dr. Randal Weber, Professor and Chairman of Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center and a world-renowned leader in the treatment of aggressive cutaneous malignancy, and Dr. Brian A. Moore have assembled a panel of current and emerging leaders in comprehensive oncologic care to clarify the challenges and advances in treating skin cancer of the head and neck.Unlike other anatomic regions, the complex anatomy, unique functions, and aesthetic import of head and neck structures demand great technical expertise and a collaborative approach to meet the expectations of patients. For the first time, a true multidisciplinary approach to cutaneous malignancy of the head and neck is presented, as international experts in head and neck surgical oncology, dermatology, Mohs micrographic surgery, plastic and reconstructive surgery, radiation oncology, and medical oncology present state-of-the-art techniques and promising horizons in the treatment of cutaneous malignancy of the head and neck. Whether in primary care or a specialty practice, this text should prove invaluable to any practitioner who treats patients with skin cancer of the head and neck. This is the only textbook on this subject that comprehensively addresses patient management - from diagnosis, treatment (in all forms, including chemotherapy and radiation), and reconstruction. This book makes preparation for actual patient care or presentations simpler and easier; currently, someone wanting to study this field would have to get articles, a head and neck surgery text, and a facial plastic/reconstruction text to gather all the information that is presented here. This book is suitable for ENT surgeons, plastic surgeons, general surgical oncologists, dermatologists, and even radiation/medical oncologists in endemic areas who treat patients with aggressive cutaneous malignancies. Each chapter has information that will be valuable to both seasoned practitioners and residents in training.
