What is the evidence? Evidence-based medicine, or EBM which slips off the tongue more readily, seeks to offer proof that what we offer patients whenever we treat them, do a diagnostic test, or recommend anything from an operation to change in life style, is known to be effective. Fifty to 100 years ago, health care was delivered patchily, much less of it was effective, and was based on an image of a kindly doctor treating the sick, who were glad of whatever help could be offered. Now, medicine is effective and whether you look at it as major government expense or big business in private health care insurance, there is no sense in spending money on ineffective treatments, while we do not have enough to spend on what is of proven worth. Individual doctors cannot read everything and cannot possibly synthesise what they do read, so that they are aware of what is proven to be effective and what probably is not. The "The Evidence for ..." series seeks to fill that need. The scope of this volume is intentionally broad. We review applications of spatially realistic occupancy models and age- or stage-structured demographic models as well as individual-based demographic models. These three main Population Viability Analysis (PVA) approaches initially are compared with other conservation assessment tools in an overview by Akcakaya, Lacy and Sjogren-Gulve and Hanski, with a special chapter on plant PVAs by Menges, all using illustrative examples. Fleishman et al. subsequently outline how nested subsets analyses can help discern focal species, taxa whose habitat requirements may encompass those of larger species groups and can be subjected to PVAs. Kindvall then compares the predictive accuracy of simpler occupancy models versus a democratic model for predicting local extinctions and colonizations in a bush-cricket metapopulation. Thereafter, four case studies which use the three model categories are presented (papers by Berglind, Ebenhard, Lennartsson, and Vos et al.). The volume concludes with Gardenfors' paper on the use of PVAs in the classification of threatened species, and Lacy's presentation of the structure and logic of VORTEX, a widely used demographic and genetic PVA model.

Yes, that is the beauty of it - absurdly determined to metamorphose themselves into a glossy photograph seen in a glossy magazine that caused a spark of desire within the tinder-dry kindling of their imagination. They were consumed with all that the photograph promised until that reality could be made theirs: to achieve all of the experience, the life's journey implied within it, to redefine their already long lives, to change themselves, to fast-track to the achievement of the decades of experience exemplified by those young adventurers in that glossy photograph in that glossy magazine. What an absurd notion. For no other reason, it had to be: three quickly became five guys on heritage motorcycles, hooking up with an ex-Special Forces operative and a combat zone photographer to make it seven for a safari across the top of Africa. From Spain to Tangier, they traversed the Riff, navigated the Atlas Mountains, circled Cirque du Jaffar, and rode through the Gorges du Ziz. Rough-riding across Morocco has never been so much fun. Wild camping on the way under star-spattered sky, across unforgiving terrain where luxury is a warm sleeping bag. In places where if you don't guard it you lose it, and where changing co-ordinates on a fast and furious basis makes good sense. Through oft sudden lows where the warmth of a Moroccan welcome exceeds the heat from black coffee, honeyed mint teas, or a meal from a hot tajine. Until dusty boots touch down on the sands of the Sahara at Erg Chebbi to witness a new dawn rise.

So schreibt der Kölner Stadtanzeiger „Alles ging den Bach runter – Kinder schwänzen zunehmend die Schule“ (Ksta 15. 07. 2002), die Süddeutsche Zeitung titelt „Schulsport Blaumachen“ (Süddeutsche Zeitung 15. 02. 2000), und dem WDR zufolge liegt das „Schwänzen im Trend“ (WDR 22. 02. 2002), Spiegel Online betont „Schwänzer sind Störenfriede“ (Spiegel 22. 02. 2002) und der Fokus warnt „Schulschwänzer riskieren Lehrstelle“ (Fokus 13. 05. 2007). Trotz der Tatsache, dass in vielen Medienberichten von einer Zunahme des Sch- schwänzens berichtet wird, ist unklar, ob diese Aussage zutrifft oder nicht, denn letztlich fehlen repräsentative Daten, die eine solche Darstellung zulassen w- den. Auch die relativ abgesicherten Kenntnisse über eine Zunahme der Anz- gen und Bußgeldbescheide (Bundesministerien des Innern und der Justiz 2001: 1 557 oder Bezirksregierung Düsseldorf 2001) sagen nichts über die Entwicklung des Schulschwänzens aus, da auch angenommen werden kann, dass sich nur das Anzeigenverhalten verändert hat, nicht aber das eigentliche Schwänzen. Ferner hängt die Zahl der Bußgeldbescheide auch von behördeninternen Regelungen ab, die sich auf die Meldepraxis der Schulen auswirken können, ohne dass sich die Verbreitung des Schulschwänzens verändert haben muss.
