This book is comprised of seven chapters about the experiences of teachers and principals in the public education system. Chapter One investigates teachers' and principals' perspectives on the issue of students' risky online behaviours as well as the role of their resilience in their perspectives on this topic. Chapter Two assesses the extent to which English Language Learner status was related to the reading achievement of Texas Grade 4 boys and girls in special education. Chapter Three studies the degree to which differences were present between experienced, moderately experienced, and new school principals in terms of what they emphasized and how they spent their work time at their campuses. Chapter Four examines the reading, mathematics, and science performance of elementary school students based on the years of experience of their school principal. Chapter Five presents the results of a study that was conducted to examine the relationship between the number of school counsellors employed at the elementary, middle, and high school levels and the percentage of students determined to be at risk during the 2018-2019 school year in Texas. Chapter Six examines the effect of bilingual education programs on the reading performance of Grade 5 students in Texas during the 2018-2019 school year. Finally, Chapter Seven studies the degree to which differences were present in the percentages of all students who enrolled in a dual-credit mathematics course in Texas public high schools by their economic status.

The large-scale, formal consumption of huge quantities of food and drink is a feature of many societies, but extracting evidence for feasting from the archaeological record has, until recently, been problematic. Now new techniques of scientific analysis are being combined with greater theoretical sophistication to shed exciting new light on this conspicuous social practice. This collection of essays, also published as a special issue (73:2) of the journal Hesperia, investigates the rich evidence for the character of the Mycenaean feast. While much of the evidence discussed comes from the Palace of Nestor near Pylos, the authors also present new material from Tsoungiza near Nemea, and from other Bronze Age sites on mainland Greece and Crete. Textual evidence (from Linear B tablets) for the collection of raw materials, and the stocktaking of equipment, is complemented by discussions of the faunal and artifactual assemblages feasts left behind. Specially commissioned papers put Mycenaean practice in context by comparing it to contemporary activities on Cyprus and in Minoan Crete, while a final chapter compares Bronze with Iron Age Greece, especially as seen through the lens of Homeric epic. While not claiming to be a comprehensive survey of the practice of feasting, this volume offers, nonetheless, a rich and detailed collection of evidence, from a variety of sources, for conspicuous consumption in the Mycenaean period. As analysis of the revenue available to Qing garrisons in Xinjiang reveals, imperial control over the region in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries depended upon sizeable yearly subsidies from China. In an effort to satisfy criticism of their expansion into Xinjiang and make the territory pay for itself, the Qing court permitted local authorities great latitude in fiscal matters and encouraged the presence of Han and Chinese Muslim merchants. At the same time, the court recognized the potential for unrest posed by Chinese mercantile penetration of this Muslim, Turkic-speaking area. They consequently attempted, through administrative and legal means, to defend the native Uyghur population against economic depredation. This ethnic policy reflected a conception of the realm that was not Sinocentric, but rather placed the Uyghur on a par with Han Chinese. Both this ethnic policy and Xinjiang’s place in the realm shifted following a series of invasions from western Turkestan starting in the 1820’s. Because of the economic importance of Chinese merchants and the efficacy of merchant militia in Xinjiang, the Qing court revised its policies in their favor, for the first time allowing permanent Han settlement in the area. At the same time, the court began to advocate provincehood and the Sinicization of Xinjiang as a resolution to the perennial security problem. These shifts, the author argues, marked the beginning of a reconception of China to include Inner Asian lands and peoples—a notion that would, by the twentieth century, become a deeply held tenet of Chinese nationalism.
