Dr Christopher Dresser is best remembered for his pioneering advances in design and associated technology. In the new industrial world of the nineteenth century, Dresser was the first designer to understand that machinery was a good servant but a poor master; he made it his business to understand how machines worked. His success gained him credibility. Dresser became a sought-after consultant to several textile manufacturers, most notably Barlow & Jones, Tootal, Warner & Sons, Turnbull & Stockdale, and Wardle, which allowed him to establish the largest design practice in Britain by 1870. Equally, it was his success in promoting textiles at affordable prices that attracted his popular following in the press. Unlike his contemporaries, he was interested in making designs available to everyone. However, Dresser is less celebrated in comparison to other designers of the era, such as William Morris, because Dresser was obliged to abandon this campaign to improve British taste due to an unexplained illness in the early 1880s. At the same time, Morris was expanding his business just as the Arts and Crafts movement was beginning to gain momentum. Despite being the first Victorian to address the decorative needs of all the population, there is a severe lack of appreciation for Dresser's work - whose influence can be found in many textiles that we take for granted today. This book redresses that balance, giving Dresser the monograph he deserves.

Christopher's elegant and understated works reveal connections with a vast spectrum of sources from across the globe, such as rock formations in Israel, fossils from the Cretaceous chalks of Hertfordshire, prehistoric standing stones in Avebury and early Aegean figurines. The marks Christopher makes on her works are suggestive both of natural processes, such as weathering, and the forms and tools of mechanised industry. Christopher has been exhibiting sculpture for over 45 years. During that period she has won many awards and prizes, including the Silver Medal for Sculpture of Outstanding Merit by the Royal Society of British Sculptors and the Otto Beit Medal of Sculpture of Outstanding Merit. She is a fellow of the Royal Society of British Sculptors and was elected a Royal Academician in 1989. She lives and works near Bath.

Kai Akagi considers the christological significance of Jesus' role in judgement in the speeches in Acts 10:34-43 and 17:22-31. Reading these speeches as part of the narrative of Luke-Acts with attention to scriptural use and influence, along with extended analysis of judgment figures in Jewish pseudepigraphal and Qumran literature, reveals that the scope of Jesus' judgment and the use of scriptural patterns in the speeches suggest his divine authority by associating him with God's final judgment at the resurrection. At the same time, his judgment identifies him as the appointed human messiah whom the speeches proclaim. While further tracing the contours and characteristics of messianism and mediatorial figures in Judaism contemporary with the beginnings of Christianity and the New Testament texts, this volume integrates study of the speeches in Acts, Lukan theology, early christology, and scriptural use and influence, whether direct and through the shaping of collective cultural knowledge.

Christopher Nolan is the writer and director of Hollywood blockbusters like The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises, and also of arthouse films like Memento and Inception. Underlying his staggering commercial success however, is a darker sensibility that questions the veracity of human knowledge, the allure of appearance over reality and the latent disorder in contemporary society. This appreciation of the sinister owes a huge debt to philosophy and especially modern thinkers like Friedrich Nietzsche, Sigmund Freud and Jacques Derrida. The English historian of culture Christopher Dawson (1889-1970) was an independent scholar and the author of more than twenty books. He served as assistant lecturer in the History of Culture, University College, Exeter (1925), Forwood Lecturer in the Philosophy of Religion, University of Liverpool (1934), Gifford Lecturer at the University of Edinburgh (1947-1949), and as Professor of Catholic Studies at Harvard University (1958-1962). He was elected Fellow of the British Academy in 1943 and edited the Dublin Review during the Second World War. This biography by Christina Scott, Dawson's daughter, is a sensitive portrait of a complex and fascinating scholar.Unlike other English Christian converts of the twentieth century who excelled in literature, like G. K. Chesterton or C. S. Lewis, Dawson turned to the social sciences. He drew from the new idea of culture as a common way of life emerging from anthropology at the time of the Great War to shape a new approach to history.
