WW Norton & Co The Blue Buick: New and Selected Poems
Gathering works from five of B. H. Fairchild's previous volumes stretching over thirty years, and adding twenty-six brilliant new poems, The Blue Buick showcases the career of a poet who represents "the American voice at its best: confident and conflicted, celebratory and melancholic" (The New York Times). Fairchild's poetry covers a wide range, both geographically and intellectually, though it finds its centre in the rural Midwest: in oilfields and dying small towns, in taverns, baseball fields, one-screen movie theatres and skies "vast, mysterious and bored." Ultimately, its cultural scope—where Mozart stands beside Patsy Cline, with Grunewald, Gödel and Rothko only a subway ride from the Hollywood films of the 1950s—transcends region and decade to explore the relationship of memory to the imagination and the mysteries of time and being. And finally there is the character of Roy Eldridge Garcia, a machinist/poet/philosopher who sees in the landscape and silence of the high plains the held breath of the earth, "as if we haven't quite begun to exist. That coming into being still going on."

Oxford University Press A History of the County of Chester: Volume II
This volume contains the administrative and parliamentary history of the county, a chapter on its forests, and a table of population. As a County Palatine in the later middle ages Cheshire developed institutions which differed from those of other English counties. No justices of the peace were appointed there until the 16th century, and the palatine courts were abolished only in 1830. The first part of the volume describes Cheshire's government in the middle ages and its gradual assimilation to `normal' counties, the work of the justices of the peace from the 16th to the 19th century, and that of the County Council until local government reorganization in 1974. Cheshire was also unusual in its failure to achieve parliamentary representation until the 16th century. The story of Cheshire's representation, including that of the city of Chester, is carried from that time to the second general election of 1974.It reveals the influence of many of the leading county families, and particularly that of the Grosvenors in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. Much of Cheshire lay within the forests of Delamere and Mondrem, Macclesfield, and Wirral, whose administration is described in this volume. A table sets out the population of the county, and of all boroughs, urban and rural districts, ancient parishes with their constituent townships, and civil parishes, at everycensus between 1801 and 1971; the table therefore serves also as a key to the administrative geography and economic expansion of the county in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Pen & Sword Books Ltd The Rescue Ships and The Convoys
The Rescue Ships and the Convoys tells the history of one of the least known aspects of Second World War maritime history. Despite the threat of heavy losses of ships and lives, no hospital ships, which had to be lit, could accompany the convoys as they would betray a convoy's position. The solution was to create a fleet of 30 small Merchant Navy vessels of about 1,500 gross tons, mostly from coastal trade. These Rescue Ships', commanded and manned by Merchant Navy personnel, carried medical teams, and life-saving equipment including operating theatres, hospital beds, Carley' floats, and hoists. Undeterred either by either enemy action or atrocious weather conditions, these vessels accompanied close to 800 convoys and saved 4,194 lives from ships sunk in the North Atlantic and with the Arctic convoys. During their service, seven Rescue Ships were lost. This is a story packed with suspense, danger, achievement and tragedy. As the author, Vice Admiral Schofield, who was closely inv

Nova Science Publishers Inc Spacetime Energy: A Twenty First Century Perspective
The anthology titled "Spacetime Energy: A Twenty First Century Perspective" encompasses novel and avant garde ideas that delineate the intrinsic nature of spacetime and several of its aspects. The collection of papers epitomises the fundamental aspects of the physical world. For instance, the authors have considered the affine connection between gravitation and electromagnetism. The non-commutative nature of spacetime has also been elaborated in connection with gravitation and electromagnetism and also in terms of monopoles. On the other hand, the rudimentary nature of the zero point field or the field of the vacuum has also been considered to describe the 2-state asymmetries that are found in nature. Several interesting models have been considered to get a novel perspective on the nature of the universe we live in; the importance of dark energy has been implied therein. The authors have also considered the phenomenon of photoelectric effect in case of grapheme and other similar crystals. A new formula has also been found for the conductance in case of carbon nano tubes. Ultra-high energy fermionic behaviour has been elaborately discussed from a novel perspective and the anomalous gyromagnetic ratio of the electron has also been elucidated on the pedestal of the noncommutative nature of spacetime. Resorting to an altogether different approach, the nature of symmetry breaking and the details related to the relevant Lie algebras has also been discussed. Essentially, the collection of works provides a broad range of conceptual understanding of the universe, both in the macroscopic and the microscopic scale. Nevertheless, the reader should find the works to broaden their view of the physical world that exists around us.

Manchester University Press The British New Wave: A Certain Tendency?
This book offers an opportunity to reconsider the films of the British New Wave in the light of forty years of heated debate. By eschewing the usual tendency to view films like A Kind of Loving and The Entertainer collectively and include them in broader debates about class, gender, and ideology, this book presents a new and innovative look at this famous cycle of British films. For each film, a re-distribution of existing critical emphasis also allows the problematic relationship between these films and the question of realism to be reconsidered. Drawing upon existing sources and returning to long-standing and unchallenged assumptions about these films, this book offers the opportunity for the reader to return to the British New Wave and decide for themselves where they stand in relation to the films.

Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd Policy Problems and Policy Design
B. Guy Peters presents a critique of conventional policy design methods, placing emphasis on the need to formulate interconnecting designs for issues that cross multiple policy areas. He advocates the use of analytic categories for understanding problems rather than functional categories, such as defence and health, to change the perspective of problems and modernise policy design. Whereas previous literature takes a top-down, technocratic approach, this new perspective emphasises the importance of context and the pressing need to unite designs between policy areas. Effective methods should be open and inclusive by reviewing a wider range of policy alternatives. Chapters discuss the logic of policy design, the different problems that can arise in policy and how to successfully link these issues with the correct policy instruments. Peters also provides a set of ten key principles that can be used to improve the technique of policy formulation for effective and realistic designs. For any academic, researcher or student of public policy interested in the formulation of policy decisions, this book will be an essential tool for successful policy analysis. Current policy-makers and strategists will benefit from the in-depth discussion on tackling policy problems as well as improving and interconnecting policy designs.
