This volume contains the administrative and parliamentary history of the county, a chapter on its forests, and a table of population. As a County Palatine in the later middle ages Cheshire developed institutions which differed from those of other English counties. No justices of the peace were appointed there until the 16th century, and the palatine courts were abolished only in 1830. The first part of the volume describes Cheshire's government in the middle ages and its gradual assimilation to `normal' counties, the work of the justices of the peace from the 16th to the 19th century, and that of the County Council until local government reorganization in 1974. Cheshire was also unusual in its failure to achieve parliamentary representation until the 16th century. The story of Cheshire's representation, including that of the city of Chester, is carried from that time to the second general election of 1974.It reveals the influence of many of the leading county families, and particularly that of the Grosvenors in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. Much of Cheshire lay within the forests of Delamere and Mondrem, Macclesfield, and Wirral, whose administration is described in this volume. A table sets out the population of the county, and of all boroughs, urban and rural districts, ancient parishes with their constituent townships, and civil parishes, at everycensus between 1801 and 1971; the table therefore serves also as a key to the administrative geography and economic expansion of the county in the 19th and 20th centuries.

The Rescue Ships and the Convoys tells the history of one of the least known aspects of Second World War maritime history. Despite the threat of heavy losses of ships and lives, no hospital ships, which had to be lit, could accompany the convoys as they would betray a convoy's position. The solution was to create a fleet of 30 small Merchant Navy vessels of about 1,500 gross tons, mostly from coastal trade. These Rescue Ships', commanded and manned by Merchant Navy personnel, carried medical teams, and life-saving equipment including operating theatres, hospital beds, Carley' floats, and hoists. Undeterred either by either enemy action or atrocious weather conditions, these vessels accompanied close to 800 convoys and saved 4,194 lives from ships sunk in the North Atlantic and with the Arctic convoys. The anthology titled "Spacetime Energy: A Twenty First Century Perspective" encompasses novel and avant garde ideas that delineate the intrinsic nature of spacetime and several of its aspects. The collection of papers epitomises the fundamental aspects of the physical world. For instance, the authors have considered the affine connection between gravitation and electromagnetism. The non-commutative nature of spacetime has also been elaborated in connection with gravitation and electromagnetism and also in terms of monopoles. On the other hand, the rudimentary nature of the zero point field or the field of the vacuum has also been considered to describe the 2-state asymmetries that are found in nature. Several interesting models have been considered to get a novel perspective on the nature of the universe we live in; the importance of dark energy has been implied therein. The authors have also considered the phenomenon of photoelectric effect in case of grapheme and other similar crystals. A new formula has also been found for the conductance in case of carbon nano tubes. Ultra-high energy fermionic behaviour has been elaborately discussed from a novel perspective and the anomalous gyromagnetic ratio of the electron has also been elucidated on the pedestal of the noncommutative nature of spacetime.
