Watkins Media Limited Retreat: How the Counterculture invented Wellness
The counterculture of the Sixties and the Seventies is remembered chiefly for music, fashion, art, feminism, computing, black power, cultural revolt and the New Left. But an until-now unexplored, yet no less important aspect — both in its core identity and in terms of its ongoing significance and impact — is its relationship with health. In this popular and illuminating cultural history of the relationship between health and the counterculture, Matthew Ingram connects the dots between the beats, yoga, meditation, psychedelics, psychoanalysis, Eastern philosophy, sex, and veganism, showing how the hippies still have a lot to teach us about our wellbeing.

University of Toronto Press Zarathustra's Sisters: Women's Autobiography and the Shaping of Cultural History
Although the names Mandel'shtam and Nijinsky more commonly evoke the Russian poet and the ballet dancer, their wives, Nadezhda and Romola are also beginning to attract attention. Similarly, the lives and works of Simone de Beauvoir, Lou Andreas-Salome, Asja Lacis, and Maitreyi Devi all have been represented as having been dominated by their association with some of the most important men of Western letters, but they too are coming into their own. These six women all wrote the stories of their own lives, creating powerful narratives that channelled cultural forces at the same time as parrying them. Susan Ingram analyzes the literary, cultural, and ethical effects of these writers whose lives were intertwined with the cultural vibrations of their time, and who heralded the postmodern in having to negotiate their subject positions in the form of a relational autonomy, an ethical sense of alterity, and a strong desire to make an intervention in the cultures of their times. Interdisciplinary in approach, this study brings together scholarship on auto/biography, post/modernity, ethics, identity, and relationality, and makes available material from a variety of languages, some of which appears in English for the first time. In relating the life-stories of six remarkable women to the increasingly popular genre of academic personal criticism, Ingram concludes that the ambiguous, problematic way these women represent their autonomy encourages us to read such academic criticism with attention to the way it represents and often blurs personal and collective identity.

Lund Humphries Publishers Ltd Gerald Laing: A Catalogue Raisonné
This is a complete, illustrated catalogue of the painting and sculpture of Pop Art pioneer Gerald Laing (1936–2011), who shot to fame in the 1960s with his large-scale, iconic paintings of film-stars such as Brigitte Bardot and Anna Karina, conveyed in styles and colours that aped the crude but powerful printing processes of mass advertising. In 1964 Laing moved to New York and transformed effortlessly from Pop artist to abstract minimalist, showing works in the seminal Primary Structures exhibition of 1966 and forming lasting friendships with leading lights of the US art world, such as Andy Warhol, Larry Poons, Roy Lichtenstein and Larry Bell. A self-imposed exile to a restored Scottish castle in 1969 removed him from the art world’s centre, but allowed him the space to develop a more personal, sculptural vocabulary in which the hard edges of his abstraction gradually gave way to anthropomorphic form. This catalogue raisonné covers each distinct phase of Laing’s career and includes a fully illustrated catalogue of his works alongside comprehensive related reference material: chronology, exhibition history and list of public collections. An introductory essay by Michael Findlay, a close friend of Laing, provides an overview of his artistic development while essays by gallerist Lyndsey Ingram, editor David Knight and Marco Livingstone, a leading authority on Pop Art, examine specific periods and aspects of Laing’s practice.

Orion Publishing Co This is Warhol
Andy Warhol, the iconic Pop artist, presented himself as the vacuous, dumb kid, famously saying, 'If you want to know all about Andy Warhol, just look at the surface of my paintings … and there I am. There's nothing behind it.' This book penetrates the surface and explores Warhol’s art from his beginnings as a commercial artist to his apotheosis as a society portrait painter. Vivid illustrations reveal Andy’s worlds: his childhood in Pittsburgh, his chaotic Manhattan mansion and the Silver Factory, where New York’s bright new things hung out and had fun. Series writer Catherine Ingram brings her extensive knowledge to the book, while specially commissioned illustrations by Andrew Rae vividly portray the text.

University of Notre Dame Press Beyond High Courts: The Justice Complex in Latin America
Beyond High Courts: The Justice Complex in Latin America is a much-needed volume that will make a significant contribution to the growing fields of comparative law and politics and Latin American legal institutions. The book moves these research agendas beyond the study of high courts by offering theoretically and conceptually rich empirical analyses of a set of critical supranational, national, and subnational justice sector institutions that are generally neglected in the literature. The chapters examine the region’s large federal systems (Argentina, Brazil, and Mexico), courts in Chile and Venezuela, and the main supranational tribunal in the region, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights. Aimed at students of comparative legal institutions while simultaneously offering lessons for practitioners charged with designing such institutions, the volume advances our understanding of the design of justice institutions, how their form and function change over time, what causes those changes, and what consequences they have. The volume also pays close attention to how justice institutions function as a system, exploring institutional interactions across branches and among levels of government (subnational, national, supranational) and analyzing how they help to shape, and are shaped by, politics and law. Incorporating the institutions examined in the volume into the literature on comparative legal institutions deepens our understanding of justice systems and how their component institutions can both bolster and compromise democracy and the rule of law.Contributors: Matthew C. Ingram, Diana Kapiszewski, Azul A. Taylor & Francis Ltd Critical Theory to Structuralism: Philosophy, Politics and the Human Sciences
Philosophy in the middle of the 20th Century, between 1920 and 1968, responded to the cataclysmic events of the time. Thinkers on the Right turned to authoritarian forms of nationalism in search of stable forms of collective identity, will, and purpose. Thinkers on the Left promoted egalitarian forms of humanism under the banner of international communism. Others saw these opposed tendencies as converging in the extinction of the individual and sought to retrieve the ideals of the Enlightenment in ways that critically acknowledged the contradictions of a liberal democracy racked by class, cultural, and racial conflict. Key figures and movements discussed in this volume include Schmitt, Adorno and the Frankfurt School, Arendt, Benjamin, Bataille, French Marxism, Black Existentialism, Saussure and Structuralism, Levi Strauss, Lacan and Late Pragmatism. These individuals and schools of thought responded to this 'modernity crisis' in different ways, but largely focused on what they perceived to be liberal democracy's betrayal of its own rationalist ideals of freedom, equality, and fraternity.

HarperCollins Publishers The Black Ridge: Amongst the Cuillin of Skye
‘Will undoubtedly become a classic narrative of this scenically magnificent, legend-rich and geologically unique part of Scotland’ Cameron McNeish, The Herald Rising a kilometre out of the storm-scoured waters around Scotland’s Isle of Skye is a dark battlement of pinnacles and ridgelines: the Cuillin. Plagued by ferocious weather and built from rock that tears skin and confounds compasses, a crossing of the Cuillin is the toughest mountaineering expedition in the British Isles. But the traverse is only part of its lure. Hewn from the innards of an ancient volcano, this mountain range stands like a crown on an island drenched in intrigue. While nineteenth-century climbers flocked to the Alps, the ridge lay untrodden and unyielding. When a generation of mountaineers did come, they found a remarkable prize: the last peaks of Britain to be climbed – peaks that would be named after those who climbed them. Along the way, many others, from artists and poets to mystics and wanderers, have been lured by the Cuillin’s haunting beauty and magic. Those who have been seduced by the deadly magic of these mountains attest to the complexity of humans’ relationship with the intrigue of our wildest, most dangerous places. The Black Ridge is a journey through the history and into the heights of the Cuillin of Skye – from the ridge’s violent birth to the tales of its pioneers, its thrills, its myths and its monsters. From a night spent in a cave beneath its highest peak to the ascent of its most infamous pinnacle, this is an adventure on foot through all seasons across the most mesmerising mountain range in Britain.

Vanderbilt University Press Women's Work: How Culinary Cultures Shaped Modern Spain
We are living a moment in which famous chefs, Michelin stars, culinary techniques, and gastronomical accolades attract moneyed tourists to Spain from all over the world. This has prompted the Spanish government to declare its cuisine as part of Spanish patrimony.Yet even with this widespread global attention, we know little about how Spanish cooking became a litmus test for demonstrating Spain’s modernity and, in relation, the roles ascribed to the modern Spanish women responsible for daily cooking. Efforts to articulate a new, modern Spain infiltrated writing in multiple genres and media. Women’s Work places these efforts in their historical context to yield a better understanding of the roles of food within an inherently uneven modernization process. Further, the book reveals the paradoxical messages women have navigated, even in texts about a daily practice that shaped their domestic and work lives. This argument is significant because of the degree to which domestic activities, including cooking, occupied women’s daily lives, even while issues like their fitness as citizens and participation in the public sphere were hotly debated. At the same time, progressive intellectuals from diverse backgrounds began to invoke Spanish cooking and eating as one measure of Spanish modernity.Women’s Work shows how culinary writing engaged these debates and reached women at the site of much of their daily labor—the kitchen—and, in this way, shaped their thinking about their roles in modernizing Spain.
