Fundacion Cisneros Jaime Davidovich in Conversation with Daniel R. Quiles
As a fixture on the SoHo-based experimental art scene of the 1970s and 1980s, Argentine-American video/television-art pioneer and conceptual artist Jaime Davidovich (born 1936) has worked in a broad variety of mediums throughout his long career, including video, painting and installation, while also establishing himself as an activist and TV producer. His weekly variety program, The Live! Show (1979–84), featured performances and interviews with artists such as Laurie Anderson, Eric Bogosian, Tony Oursler and Michael Smith, while other video works included appearances by the artist Stuart Sherman. Davidovich embraced a postmodernist’s eclecticism and a humorous aesthetic. In this lively conversation with scholar Daniel R. Quiles, Davidovich recounts his early years in postwar Argentina, the 1963 coup d’état that led to his relocation to New York and his long, influential career.

John Wiley and Sons Ltd Donald Davidson: Philosophy of Language
This book is an introduction to and interpretation of the philosophy of language devised by Donald Davidson over the past 25 years. The guiding intuition is that Davidson's work is best understood as an ongoing attempt to purge semantics of theoretical reifications. Seen in this light the recent attack on the notion of language itself emerges as a natural development of his Quinian scepticism towards "meanings" and his rejections of reference-based semantic theories. Linguistic understanding is, for Davidson, essentially dynamic, arising only through a continuous process of theory construction and reconstruction. The result is a conception of semantics in which the notion of interpretation and not the notion of knowing a language is fundamental. In the course of his book Bjorn Ramberg provides a critical discussion of reference-based semantic theories, challenging the standard accounts of the principle of charity and elucidating the notion of radical interpretation. The final chapter on incommensurability ties in with the discussions of Kuhn's work in the philosophy of science and suggests certain links between Davidson's analytic semantics and hermeneutic theory.

The Book Guild Ltd Travels with Maridadi: Harley-Davidson Adventures in Saudi Arabia
After a botched spinal operation left her partially paralysed aged forty-five, Bizzie Frost found herself unable to enjoy the active lifestyle she loved in Saudi Arabia. That was remedied six years later when her airline captain husband, Frosty, proposed they buy a Harley-Davidson. An invitation to join friends on a 2,500km ride to Oman was irresistible and they bought a customised Road King. They named her Maridadi, meaning 'beautiful' in Swahili. Travels with Maridadi is an epic account of their adventures on Maridadi in Saudi Arabia, a country rarely visited by outsiders during the thirty years that Bizzie called it home. Riding pillion with Frosty, she travelled thousands of kilometres across the deserts and mountains of the Kingdom, as well as other Middle Eastern countries. Her stories and photographs breathe life into the scenery, people and culture of the Kingdom, and convey the freedom and healing power of motorcycling on the open road.

Quarto Publishing Group USA Inc The Harley-Davidson Story: Tales from the Archives
The Harley-Davidson Story: Tales from the Archives is a fascinating, visually driven overview of the motor company's rich story, created in cooperation with the Harley-Davidson Museum. The story of Harley-Davidson is a classic American tale of spirit, invention, and the right idea at the right time. From its beginning in a small Milwaukee shed in 1903, William Harley and his cousins, the Davidson brothers, set in motion what would eventually become the world’s most iconic motorcycle company. While other motorcycle companies rose and fell through the teens and 1920s, Harley went from strength to strength, whether introducing its first V-twin motor or dominating race tracks across America. The Milwaukee Miracle even prospered during WWII, building war bikes for the armed forces. By the 1950s, they’d buried their last American-built competitor, Indian, and gained a hold over the US market that they maintain to this day. A remarkable story deserves a remarkable space to recount it. Such is the Harley-Davidson Museum in Milwaukee, which opened in 2009. Harley-Davidson partnered with Motorbooks to create this book relaying Harley-Davidson’s story, as told through the museum’s displays and archive assets.

Figure 1 Publishing Echoes of the Supernatural: The Graphic Art of Robert Davidson
Over six decades of brilliant prints and paintings from the most prominent Northwest Coast artist of his generation.Finalist for the Roderick Haig-Brown Regional Prize, a BC & Yukon Book Prize Since leaving Haida Gwaii to study art in Vancouver—where he carved argillite with Bill Reid in a department store and hand-sold prints on the UBC campus—Guud sans glans, Robert Davidson has moved between two worlds. As a host of Potlatches, carver of masks and totem poles, and performer and teacher of traditional Haida songs and dances, he has been one of the driving forces in the resurgence of Haida culture in the aftermath of colonization. As an artist working in serigraphs, acrylic, wood, silver, and aluminum to preserve and breathe new life into Haida formline, he has become among the most respected, celebrated, and thrilling artists in the country, if not the world.Echoes of the Supernatural is the first publication in over forty years to offer a comprehensive visual retrospective of his astonishing career. It includes new photography of over 150 prints, as well as images of over fifty paintings; numerous painted woven hats, painted and carved sculptures, jewellery, aluminum sculpture; and dozens of archival photos. His long-time gallerist Gary Wyatt, who worked closely with Davidson in shaping the book and received full access to his archives, details the artist’s life and career, and offers insights on the work based on extensive new interviews. A foreword by Karen Duffek situates the contours of Davidson’s practice within the broader Northwest Coast art world.

Encounter Books,USA David's Sling: A History of Democracy in Ten Works of Art
Throughout Western history, the societies that have made the greatest contributions to the spread of freedom have created iconic works of art to celebrate their achievements. Yet despite the enduring appeal of these works--from the Parthenon to Michelangelo's David to Picasso's Guernica--histories of both art and democracy have ignored this phenomenon. Millions have admired the artworks covered in this book but relatively few know why they were commissioned, what was happening in the culture that produced them, or what they were meant to achieve. Even scholars who have studied them for decades often miss the big picture by viewing them in isolation from a larger story of human striving. David's Sling places into context ten canonical works of art executed to commemorate the successes of free societies that exerted political and economic influence far beyond what might have been expected of them. Fusing political and art history with a judicious dose of creative reconstruction, Victoria Coates has crafted a lively narrative around each artistic object and the free system that inspired it. This book integrates the themes of creative excellence and political freedom to bring a fresh, new perspective to both. In telling the stories of ten masterpieces, David's Sling invites reflection on the synergy between liberty and human achievement.

Cambridge University Press Wittgenstein and Davidson on Language, Thought, and Action
Wittgenstein and Davidson are two of the most influential and controversial figures of twentieth-century philosophy. However, whereas Wittgenstein is often regarded as a deflationary philosopher, Davidson is considered to be a theory builder and systematic philosopher par excellence. Consequently, little work has been devoted to comparing their philosophies with each other. In this volume of new essays, leading scholars show that in fact there is much that the two share. By focusing on the similarities between Wittgenstein and Davidson, the essays present compelling defences of their views and develop more coherent and convincing approaches than either philosopher was able to propose on his own. They show how philosophically fruitful and constructive reflection on Wittgenstein and Davidson continues to be, and how relevant the writings of both philosophers are to current debates in philosophy of mind, language, and action.
