World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Physics Of Cancer, The: Research Advances
Cancer deaths per capita have decreased in recent years, but the improvement is attributed to prevention, not treatment. The difficulty in treating cancer may be due to its 'complexity', in the mathematical physics sense of the word. Tumors evolve and spread in response to internal and external factors that involve feedback mechanisms and nonlinear behavior. Investigations of the nonlinear interactions among cells, and between cells and their environment, are crucial for developing a sufficiently detailed understanding of the system's emergent phenomenology to be able to control the behavior. In the case of cancer, controlling the system's behavior will mean the ability to treat and cure the disease. Physicists have been studying various complex, nonlinear systems for many years using a variety of techniques. These investigations have provided insights that allow physicists to make unique contributions towards the treatment of cancer. This interdisciplinary book presents recent advancements in physicists' research on cancer. The work presented in this volume uses a variety of physical, biochemical, mathematical, theoretical, and computational techniques to gain a deeper molecular and cellular understanding of the horrific disease that is cancer.

World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Linear Algebra And Optimization With Applications To Machine Learning - Volume Ii: Fundamentals Of Optimization Theory With Applications To Machine Learning
Volume 2 applies the linear algebra concepts presented in Volume 1 to optimization problems which frequently occur throughout machine learning. This book blends theory with practice by not only carefully discussing the mathematical under pinnings of each optimization technique but by applying these techniques to linear programming, support vector machines (SVM), principal component analysis (PCA), and ridge regression. Volume 2 begins by discussing preliminary concepts of optimization theory such as metric spaces, derivatives, and the Lagrange multiplier technique for finding extrema of real valued functions. The focus then shifts to the special case of optimizing a linear function over a region determined by affine constraints, namely linear programming. Highlights include careful derivations and applications of the simplex algorithm, the dual-simplex algorithm, and the primal-dual algorithm. The theoretical heart of this book is the mathematically rigorous presentation of various nonlinear optimization methods, including but not limited to gradient decent, the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) conditions, Lagrangian duality, alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM), and the kernel method. These methods are carefully applied to hard margin SVM, soft margin SVM, kernel PCA, ridge regression, lasso regression, and elastic-net regression. Matlab programs implementing these methods are included.

World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Our Celestial Clockwork: From Ancient Origins To Modern Astronomy Of The Solar System
This book is a superposition of two distinct narratives: the first is historical, discussing the evolution of astronomical knowledge since the dawn of civilizations; the second is scientific, conveying mathematical and physical content of each advancement. Great scientists of antiquity, Middle Ages and modern times until the 18th century, are presented along with their discoveries, through short biographies and anecdotes. Special care is taken to explain their achievements using mathematical and physical concepts of their time, with modern perspective added only when ancient methodology is too cumbersome or its language hardly understandable to contemporary readers. The book conveys a lot of astronomical facts and data in a pleasant and accessible manner. Almost all findings and discoveries made in ancient times are followed by simple mathematical exercises using basic knowledge, so that the reader can check the assertions himself. The book contains a lot of inedited illustrations. Geometrical schemes are given extra attention to make the examples clear and understandable. The language is simple and accessible to the young audience.

World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Regional Economics: Fundamental Concepts, Policies, And Institutions
Regional Economics: Fundamental Concepts, Policies, and Institutions is a unique and unconventional economics textbook which emphasizes the role of 'space' in economics and highlights the importance of non-economic factors particularly the role of institutions in regional development. It also presents the approach on how to evaluate regional development performance based on economic, social, and environmental considerations, which is the organizing principle for meeting people-oriented development and sustainable development goals. Other essential concepts such as 'regional science' and 'spatial economics' are also explored in this book. Why activities tend to be spatially concentrated and can get more intensified despite efforts to disperse them toward other regions? Why infrastructure development intended to increase activities and improve the population's welfare can produce the opposite outcome of greater interregional inequality? What is the role of regional and national policies in affecting growth incentives, and how non-economic factors such as institutions and the quality of local leaders can make a difference in welfare achievement? Addressing these questions allows readers to better understand the various phenomena in the actual development process.

World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Stalin And Medicine: Untold Stories
'Rapoport has written a remarkable family memoir about growing up in the loftiest of Soviet Kremlin medical circles, where her father (Yakov Rapoport) was a distinguished pathologist, a man of scientific brilliance, technical expertise, great humor, and even greater courage during the rule of Joseph Stalin, around whom many suffered violent and mysterious deaths. The author's tone is lively, direct, humorous, and bluntly honest about her family and the rarified scientific and political circles in which they lived and worked. She reveals the heights of greatness that brilliant Jews could attain under the Soviet system, and also the discriminatory prejudice and harms, including threats and likelihood of arrest, torture, and death, that they experienced under Stalin and his successors … This marvelous book is an accessible work of important historical memory and warm scholarly and personal analysis. Summing Up: Highly recommended. All readers.'CHOICEThis manuscript offers a behind-the-scenes glimpse into some extraordinary moments of 20th century Russia. In a series of entrancing stories, the book demonstrates the disastrous consequences of a totalitarian regime's intervention in medicine and medical science. The narration is based on first-hand accounts the author gathered in conversations with her father, a world-renowned pathologist, and family friends, members of the Soviet intellectual elite. As one of the leading pathologists in the country, the author's father participated in many dramatic events that were hidden from the general public. The author describes Stalin's revenge on his doctors and the fabrication of the 'Doctors' Plot'; the thrilling story of the Moscow Brain Institute; the mysterious circumstances of the death of Stalin's second wife, Nadezhda Alliluyeva; the outbreak of plague in the center of Moscow and the NKVD's approach to curbing an epidemic; the fraught drama associated with the death and autopsy of the 'father' of the H-bomb, Andrey Sakharov; and the world's first attempt at cancer biotherapy. In the Afterward entitled A Different Globe the author depicts the difficult and sometimes hilarious process of her family's adjustment to their new life in America.A number of TV programs, documentaries, and movies were shot in the author's Moscow apartment by Russian, European, and American media and movie companies.

World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Financial Risk Management: An End User Perspective
In the field of financial risk management, the 'sell side' is the set of financial institutions who offer risk management products to corporations, governments, and institutional investors, who comprise the 'buy side'. The sell side is often at a significant advantage as it employs quantitative experts who provide specialized knowledge. Further, the existing body of knowledge on risk management, while extensive, is highly technical and mathematical and is directed to the sell side. This book levels the playing field by approaching risk management from the buy side instead, focusing on educating corporate and institutional users of risk management products on the essential knowledge they need to be an intelligent buyer. Rather than teach financial engineering, this volume covers the principles that the buy side should know to enable it to ask the right questions and avoid being misled by the complexity often presented by the sell side.Written in a user-friendly manner, this textbook is ideal for graduate and advanced undergraduate classes in finance and risk management, MBA students specializing in finance, and corporate and institutional investors. The text is accompanied by extensive supporting material including exhibits, end-of-chapter questions and problems, solutions, and PowerPoint slides for lecturers.

Mathematical Society of Japan Monte Carlo Method, Random Number, And Pseudorandom Number
Although the Monte Carlo method is used in so many fields, its mathematical foundation has been weak until now because of the fundamental problem that a computer cannot generate random numbers. This book presents a strong mathematical formulation of the Monte Carlo method which is based on the theory of random number by Kolmogorov and others and that of pseudorandom number by Blum and others. As a result, we see that the Monte Carlo method may not need random numbers and pseudorandom numbers may suffice. In particular, for the Monte Carlo integration, there exist pseudorandom numbers which serve as complete substitutes for random numbers.Published by Mathematical Society of Japan and distributed by World Scientific Publishing Co. for all markets

Mathematical Society of Japan On Congruence Monodromy Problems
It is now well-known that the group SL2(Z[1/p]) and the system of modular curves over Fp2 are “closely related”, and that the latter provided first “examples” of curves over finite fields having many rational points. However, the “three basic relationships”, which really justify the former to be called the arithmetic fundamental group of the latter, still do not seem to be so commonly known. This book consists of two parts; a reproduction of the author's unpublished Lecture Notes (1968,69), and Author's Notes (2008). The former starts with explicit three main conjectural relationships for more general cases and gives various approaches towards their proofs. Though remained formally unpublished, these Lecture Notes had been widely circulated and have stimulated researches in various directions. The main conjectures themselves have also been proved since then. The Author's Notes (2008) gives detailed explanations of these developments, together with open problems.Published by Mathematical Society of Japan and distributed by World Scientific Publishing Co. for all markets

Mathematical Society of Japan Algebraic And Arithmetic Structures Of Moduli Spaces (Sapporo 2007)
The conference “Algebraic and Arithmetic Structures of Moduli Spaces” was held in September 2007, at Sapporo (Hokkaido University). Twenty talks were delivered by invited speakers on arithmetic geometry, algebraic geometry and complex geometry. This volume is the proceedings of the conference, to be exact, a collection of eleven papers contributed by some of the speakers which have undergone rigorous refereeing. The topics that are discussed in the articles are diverse in nature such as class field theory, zeta functions, moduli of arithmetic vector bundles, moduli of complex vector bundles, moduli of abelian varieties and theory of display, moduli of Fermat varieties and some topics on cubic threefolds. Among others, the papers of Pappas-Rapoport, Rajan and Weng address many new interesting questions in the related fields, which seem to be worthy of reading for young researchers.Published by Mathematical Society of Japan and distributed by World Scientific Publishing Co. for all markets except North America

Mathematical Society of Japan Geometry, Dynamics, And Foliations 2013: In Honor Of Steven Hurder And Takashi Tsuboi On The Occasion Of Their 60th Birthdays
This volume is an outcome of the conference 'Geometry and Foliations 2013' held in Tokyo in September 2013 and associated meetings, aimed for providing a good overview of the present studies as well as some perspective for further studies. The aspects and quality of the volume is represented by B Deroin's survey on Brownian motions on foliated complex surfaces which contains many essential results and ideas.Other articles cover wide topics of foliations and groups of diffeomorphisms old and new; some discuss characteristic classes such as Godbillon-Vey class or homotopy theory of foliations while others deal with topological and differential geometrical aspects, particularly in the holomorphic setting. Also, several articles shows relationship to the geometric group theory.Highly recommended to researchers and graduate students who are interested in and going to study the theories of foliations and related topics such as diffeomorphism groups, geometric group theory.Published by Mathematical Society of Japan and distributed by World Scientific Publishing Co. for all markets except North America

Mathematical Society of Japan Moduli Spaces And Arithmetic Geometry
Since its birth algebraic geometry has been closely related to and deeply motivated by number theory. Particularly the modern study of moduli spaces and arithmetic geometry have many important techniques and ideas in common. With this close relation in mind, the RIMS conference Moduli Spaces and Arithmetic Geometry was held at Kyoto University during September 8-15, 2004 as the 13th International Research Institute of the Mathematical Society of Japan. This volume is the outcome of this conference and consists of thirteen papers by invited speakers, including C Soulé, A Beauville and C Faber, and participants. All papers, with two exceptions by C Voisin and Yoshinori Namikawa, treat moduli problem and/or arithmetic geometry. Algebraic curves, Abelian varieties, algebraic vector bundles, connections and D-modules are the subjects of those moduli papers. Arakelov geometry and rigid geometry are studied in arithmetic papers. In the two exceptions, integral Hodge classes on Calabi-Yau threefolds and symplectic resolutions of nilpotent orbits are studied.Published by Mathematical Society of Japan and distributed by World Scientific Publishing Co. for all markets except North America
