Gleaning Modernity shows how earlier eighteenth-century literary texts might have eased the way for Britain's increasing modernity. They allowed Modern scenarios to be played out imaginatively, as simulations for experimental, predictive ends. The process spoke to the needs and desires of readers in a world of rapid, managed change. It worked unobtrusively first because of the practice of recycling old forms, as Pope and Richardson did, for example, with Horatian and tragic models, respectively; and second because given texts offered different readers a range of interpretative options. Along with providing original readings of such major texts as Gulliver's Travels and Clarissa, this study enlarges our sense of the Modernizing process. It also shows how a consumer-driven Darwinian model of adaptive change, affecting literature and its readership, can help us understand the ways in which literature can have social efficacy.

This book contains the first systematic exposition of the global and local theory of dynamics equivariant with respect to a (compact) Lie group. Aside from general genericity and normal form theorems on equivariant bifurcation, it describes many general families of examples of equivariant bifurcation and includes a number of novel geometric techniques, in particular, equivariant transversality. This important book forms a theoretical basis of future work on equivariant reversible and Hamiltonian systems.This book also provides a general and comprehensive introduction to codimension one equivariant bifurcation theory. In particular, it includes the bifurcation theory developed with Roger Richardson on subgroups of reflection groups and the Maximal Isotropy Subgroup Conjecture. The focus of Fictive Domains is the period 1717-1770, during which nostalgia was just beginning to emerge as a cultural concept. Using psychoanalytic, feminist, and materialist theories, this book examines representations of bodies and landscapes in the cultural production of the early- to mid-eighteenth century. With considerable social anxiety surrounding changes in the structure of the family, the control of bodies within the family, and ownership and access to the land, nostalgia generated narratives that became the richly textured novels and long poems of the eighteenth century. In Samuel Richardson's Clarissa, or the History of a Young Lady (1747-48), social anxieties are played out on the body of Clarissa Harlowe; female passion is controlled in Alexander Pope's "Eloisa to Abelard" (1717) and Jean-Jacques Rousseau's Julie, ou la Nouvelle Heloise (1761); questions of domesticity and family are explored in Oliver Goldsmith's The Vicar of Wakefield (1760); and an alternative domestic structure is proposed in Sarah Scott's A Description of Millenium Hall (1762).

Cecil Higgs was a great friend and mentor who convinced Bill in 1971 that he must leave teaching and work full-time as a sculptor. The book provides fascinating insights into the institutions in which he studied and the artistic milieu in South Africa. In 2008, when Bill was recovering from lymphoma and months of debilitating treatment, Jane Raphaely commissioned a portrait bust of Nelson Mandela for the Mandela Rhodes Foundation, which now graces the entrance foyer of the Foundation's headquarters in St George's Mall in Cape Town. Bill continues his work in his studio in Vermont near Hermanus in the Western Cape. When the writing was nearing completion Jan Mostert joined the team. His expertise in design and his part in choosing the illustrative material have made a significant contribution to the beauty of the production, as do David Richardson's excellent photographs. The book includes a catalogue of Bill's works from 1952 to 2009, and is fully indexed.
