Schiffer Publishing Ltd Outsider Art of the South
Here is an intimate glimpse into the lives and work of thirty-four self-taught artists, two folk art environments, and one museum, which tells the tale of a region's fast-disappearing way of life. Kathy Moses' thoughtful, insightful portraits introduce us to these men and women, some of whom are well known and some not so well known, but who all are driven by a compelling need to create. Their stories are told with warmth, affection, and respect. For many of these artists, this is the first time they have been presented to a wider audience. With 375-plus photographs, the book beautifully illustrates the range of each artist's work, with more examples per artist than has been shown before. The book is also an invaluable reference guide, with a source section that lists museums and galleries where the art may be seen and purchased, a retail price guide, a bibliography, and many organizations, publications, shows, and auctions devoted to Southern folk, outsider, and visionary art.

Schiffer Publishing Ltd The Soviet Space Program: The Lunar Mission Years: 1959–1976
The N1 was the booster rocket for the Soviet manned moon program and was thus the direct counterpart of the Saturn V, the rocket that took American astronauts to the moon in 1969. Standing 345 feet tall, the N1 was the largest rocket ever built by the Soviets and was roughly the same height and weight as the Saturn. Though initially ahead of the US in the space race, the Soviets lagged behind as the pace for being first on the moon accelerated. Massive technical and personnel difficulties, plus spectacular failures, repeatedly delayed the N1 program. After the successful American landings on the moon, it was finally canceled without the N1 ever achieving orbit. The complete history of this rarely known Soviet program is presented here, starting in 1959, along with detailed technical descriptions of the N1’s design and development. A full discussion of its attempted launches, disasters, and ultimate cancellation in 1974 completes this definitive history.

Schiffer Publishing Ltd The True Story of Quintilius
The newborn foal peered at Caroline from her computer screen. The online photo grabbed her heart. It was followed by photo after photo of the foal frolicking, rubbing noses with his momma, and nursing in the quiet of evening. This was the foal she knew she had to buy. Caroline had worked hard and saved all her money to buy a wild Chincoteague Pony foal and now she had fallen in love with the right one. She’d even named him "Quintilius" for the star that shone over the baby Jesus in the manger long ago. After she arrived on Chincoteague Island, Caroline volunteered for The Feather Fund and helped tag foals with the saltwater cowboys. Now, after all her hard work, the saltwater cowboys had labeled her foal—her Quintilus—for return to the island. Caroline couldn’t even consider of taking home another foal. Quintilius had won her heart. She’d poured herself into saving enough money and now it seemed the chestnut pinto colt would be forever out of her life. How could things be turned around for Caroline so that she could bring her foal home? Or would she lose her dream forever?

Schiffer Publishing Ltd TBF/TBM Avenger: Grumman’s First Torpedo Bomber in World War II
The Grumman-designed TBF Avenger was unquestionably the most successful torpedo bomber in the US fleet during WWII. Developed just prior to the US entry in WWII, the type made its combat debut at the Battle of Midway. Demand for the large carrier-borne aircraft, which could drop conventional bombs and depth charges in addition to torpedoes, soon outstripped Grumman's capacity. To supply the needed aircraft to the US Navy, the US Marines, and the Royal Navy, the Eastern Aircraft Division of General Motors was contracted to build duplicate aircraft, which were designated TBM. With numerous adaptations, both the TBF and TBM continued to serve militaries well after WWII. Through carefully researched photos, many of which have never before been published and which are reproduced in remarkable clarity, the history and details of this iconic aircraft are revealed and put the reader in the skies with this historic aircraft.

Captured with a variety of imaging technology ranging from spectral karyotyping to scanning electron microscopy, we see beauty in the delicate lacework of fungal hyphae invading a blood vessel, the structure of the normal cerebellum, and the desperate drive of metastasizing cancer cells. However, appreciation of the imagery produced by disease, which smacks of modern art, is bittersweet; we simultaneously experience the beauty of the natural world and the pain of those living with these disease processes. Ultimately, this series of images will leave the viewer with an understanding and appreciation of visual beauty inherent within the field of modern medical science.
