This is a textual and contextual study of an early Arabic mirror for princes. 'Mirrors for princes' offer advice to rulers on the ethical and practical aspects of statecraft. Adopting an interdisciplinary approach to an early Arabic mirror, the 'Counsel for Kings' of Pseudo Mawardi, this study evokes the mentality of the distinctive environment - the border region of eastern Iran - in which, it is argued, the text originated. Exploring the 'Counsel for Kings' as the product of a specific cultural milieu at a particular historical moment, as a substantial and influential work of Arabic literature, and as a critical commentary on the political and social conditions of the author's time, this book restores this multi faceted mirror for princes to history. The first volume in this two part study covers the literary, cultural, political and historical contexts and their confluence in Pseudo Mawardi's Nasihat al muluk. Het Hof Bladelin in het hart van Brugge is vernoemd naar zijn oorspronkelijke bewoner, Pieter Bladelin. Die oefende tussen 1441 en 1465 een topfunctie uit aan het Bourgondische hof. Later die eeuw bood het stadspaleis onderdak aan het Brugse filiaal van de Florentijnse Medicibank. De huidige site weerspiegelt die bloeiperiode, maar ook de hele verdere geschiedenis van het gebouw tot in de negentiende eeuw. In 1816 kwam het Hof Bladelin in de handen van priester Leo de Foere, die er een klooster en een kantklosschool voor arme meisjes vestigde. In de grote zaal van de historische westvleugel liet hij monumentale schilderijen aanbrengen, die in het begin van de achttiende eeuw in een Romeins atelier vervaardigd waren. Het zijn kopieën naar de fresco’s van Rafaël in de Vaticaanse Kamers, die onder meer het epische verhaal verbeelden van de bekering van keizer Constantijn tot het christendom. Deze vier imposante schilderijen werden tussen 2017 en 2021 onderzocht en gerestaureerd met de steun van het Fonds Baillet Latour.

Le rôle de Mgr Charue, évêque de Namur, au Concile Vatican II a été fort important. Exégète de métier et théologien de l’épiscopat, il a été élu membre de la commission doctrinale en octobre 1962 et vice-président de cette commission en décembre 1963. Il a exercé une influence considérable dans la rédaction de Dei Verbum, de Lumen Gentium et de Gaudium et Spes. Ses archives, qu’il avait soigneusement conservées, témoignent de la qualité de son travail et nous révèlent le réseau de ses collaborateurs au sein de la « squadra belga ». Dans l’inventaire, les documents ont été groupés selon les périodes du concile et classés selon les documents conciliaires. Pour chaque document sont mentionnés l’auteur, la langue et la date. Les lettres de la correspondance sont accompagnées d’un bref résumé. » Cet inventaire constitue un complément indispensable aux Carnets conciliaires de l'évêque de Namur A.-M. Charue, publiés à Louvain-la-Neuve en 2000.

Cet inventaire des archives de la ‘Conférence catholique pour les questions œcuméniques’ (1952-1963) – confié par le cardinal Willebrands, son co-fondateur et secrétaire, au Monastère de Chevetogne – permettra aux chercheurs de mieux connaître une étape vitale dans l’histoire de la participation de l’Église catholique au mouvement œcuménique. L'érection et les activités de la CCQŒ constituent sans doute une des initiatives les plus importantes du côté catholique avant le concile pour entamer le dialogue œcuménique avec les autres Églises, surtout avec le monde du protestantisme. Après quelques contacts préliminaires, Willebrands et Thijssen ont réuni en 1952 à Fribourg (en Suisse) un groupe international de théologiens et hommes d'Église qui étaient sensibilisés au drame de la division des Églises. Neuf réunions se sont succédées entre 1952 et 1963 et ont rassemblé jusqu'à 70 personnes. Dans ces réunions Willebrands et le Comité directeur ont cherché à étudier des thèmes fondamentaux pour le rapprochement œcuménique. De plus, le Comité directeur a élaboré en 1959 une Note importante à l'occasion de l'annonce du Concile. Les archives nous donnent ainsi des renseignements précieux sur l'évolution de l'esprit œcuménique tant du côté catholique que du côté du Conseil Œcuménique des Églises. L'inventaire mentionne pour chaque document le titre, l'auteur, la langue, la date et le nombre des pages. Pour une grande partie de la correspondance, un bref résumé des lettres a été ajouté. L'édition est précédée d'une Introduction du Professeur Peter De Mey qui étudie l’évolution théologique et œcuménique de la ‘Conférence catholique pour les Questions œcuméniques’. This collection of essays by some of the world’s leading theological voices aims at unfolding and reflecting upon the complex relationship between theology and history, with a special focus on the development of tradition. The articles gathered here make it clear that the role of historical consciousness within theology and the contribution of historical studies to the theological disciplines, are of paramount importance, and fundamentally alter the shape of the theological enterprise. Rather than destroying theology, tradition and theological truth claims, historical consciousness contributes to the deconstruction of all facile appeals to history in order to support theological claims, and works to prevent us from proposing simplistic readings of tradition in terms of continuity or discontinuity. Moreover, it offers new opportunities to theology to engage in the process of recontextualization in the contemporary context, taking into account its sensibility to historicity, contingency and particularity. It allows us, for example, to think resurrection anew, and to constructively criticize our forgetfulness of dangerous memories. It is not by overcoming these features of the contemporary age that theology will succeed in its striving after theological truth, but by discerning how such truth is revealed precisely within, and thanks to, particular and contingent histories, and not in spite of historicity, contingency and particularity. When this is done, the dialogue between theology and history/historical studies contributes to a contemporary reconsideration of the radical dialogical character of revelation, that is, of the way in which God reveals Godself in history. It is the hope of this collective volume that it will further deepen the understanding of revelation that was developed in Vatican II’s constitution on divine revelation, Dei verbum.
