On street corners throughout the country, men stand or sit together patiently while they wait for someone looking to hire un buen trabajador (a good worker). These day laborers are visible symbols of the changing nature of work—and the demographics of workers—in the United States. Carolyn Pinedo-Turnovsky spent nearly three years visiting with African American men and Latino immigrant men who looked for work as day laborers at a Brooklyn street intersection. Her fascinating ethnography, Daily Labors, considers these immigrants and citizens as active participants in their social and economic life. They not only work for wages but also labor daily to institute change, create knowledge, and contribute new meanings to shape their social world. Daily Labors reveals how ideologies about race, gender, nation, and legal status operate on the corner and the vulnerabilities, discrimination, and exploitation workers face in this labor market. Pinedo-Turnovsky shows how workers market themselves to conform to employers’ preconceptions of a “good worker” and how this performance paradoxically leads to a more precarious workplace experience. Ultimately, she sheds light on belonging, community, and what a “good day laborer” for these workers really is.

Down the Bright Stream: The Prehistory of Woodcock Corner and the Tregurra Valley reports on a series of fieldwork projects carried out in the Tregurra Valley, to the east of Truro, Cornwall. The work was undertaken over a period of seven years between 2009 and 2015, predominantly by the Cornwall Archaeological Unit, as a response to the development of the valley. The fieldwork led to the identification of a large number of pits and hearths across the site, the majority of which that have proved dateable spanning the Early Neolithic to the end of the Early Bronze Age. One concentration of pits included one dating to the Late Neolithic containing a remarkable engraved slate disc. Other pits contained evidence for tin processing at the start of the Bronze Age. An enclosure formed by a segmented ditch was dated to the Early Bronze Age. Of considerable note was the identification of buried soils and colluvial layers pre-dating much of the prehistoric activity and found across the site. There was an apparent absence of activity in the valley between the end of the Early Bronze Age and the start of the Iron Age, when much of the valley was enclosed with field boundary ditches and activities recorded include crop processing, charcoal burning and iron smelting. The charcoal burning continued into the medieval period. Later activity in the valley including brickmaking, stone quarrying, and small-scale mineral prospection, is reported on elsewhere.

Located in the town of Sassuolo, in the Emilia-Romagna region, and inaugurated in 2019, it is a functional-modernist yet highly atmospheric structure that provides the professionals of U.S. Sassuolo Calcio with state-of-the-art training facilities and offices. As part of a pioneering social engagement of the club, its playing fields and other amenities are also available to local amateur teams and for recreational sports. In 1972, a group of creative Brazilian musicians and poets informally led by singer-songwriter Milton Nascimento recorded a landmark double-LP titled Clube da Esquina (Corner Club). The album saw highly original songs by Milton, already an award-winning international star, sharing vinyl with those of Lô Borges, an unknown eighteen-year-old from Belo Horizonte, the capital of the state of Minas Gerais.
