Abbeville Press Inc.,U.S. History of Paris in Painting
"Paris is a moveable feast," Ernest Hemingway once proclaimed. The city of light, or the city of love, Paris is indeed a feast for the senses. Paris's rich history has been justly captured by the many artists sheltered by its garrets and supported by its patrons for centuries. Finally the story and grandeur of this beautiful city are revealed in this luxurious slipcased volume. The over 300 full-colour illustrations, including four breathtaking gatefolds, present Paris from its days as a medieval city on the Ile de la Cité, in the middle of the Seine River, through the tumultuous days of the French Revolution, to the Haussmannization of Paris, when much of the city was razed to make way for broad boulevards emanating from the Arc de Triomphe. The rich heritage of painting in Paris is broadly represented in this collection. Home of the Académie des Beaux-Arts, Paris nurtured generations of French artists and displayed their work in the Salon. As the Impressionists broke with the authoritarian standards of the Academy, Parisian art became even more diverse and increasingly abstract-a trend that continued through the 20th century. The History of Paris in Painting honours this celebrated city and its famous monuments by presenting readers with an artistic feast that will make anyone fall in love with Paris again and again.

Nova Science Publishers Inc A Closer Look at Magnetic Anisotropy
This book reports on results related to the impact of magnetic anisotropy on the properties of a new type of nanocomposite consisting of ferromagnetic nanoparticles embedded in carbon nanotubes. The authors demonstrate that when each nanotube contains only one ferromagnetic nanoparticle, the magneto-elastic anisotropy leads to the formation of densely packed arrays of magnetically isolated nanoparticles. Following this, the aspects of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy of FeCoZr-CaF2 nanocomposite films induced by shape anisotropy of metallic nanoparticles are explored, as well as the methods of anisotropy enhancement by the films treatment. Several examples of the prospective technical applications of magnetic liquids are presented. Three examples are discussed in more detail in the final chapter: controlled torsion dampers for applications in transportation, ferrofluid controlled capacitors for applications in sensor technology, and peristaltic pumps that take advantage of magneto-elastic properties.

Editions Heimdal Omaha Beach
June 6, 1944. In the gray light of dawn the landing craft carrying the assault wave of two US divisions as well as the Engineers and the Rangers, advanced toward the beach that was their assigned objective, code-named Omaha. Exhausted by the crossing and suffering from sea sicknesses, the assault units were convinced, however, that the German defenses had been crushed by the aerial and naval bombardment. In fact, sheltering in their coastal fortifications which they had been working to improve up until the very evening before, the Germany infantry waited until the Americans reached the shoreline before opening fire. 0630 hours. The landing craft of the first wave beached and lowered their ramps. That was the moment the enemy had been waiting for, and on the beach soon called Bloody Omaha, all hell broke loose. This volume brings to life that page of history. The first part introduces the forces on both sides, presents the American plan and explains in detail the German defensive positions. The second part details the landing of the successive waves followed by a blow-by-blow account of the GIs on the beach under a hail of fire in the middle of the anti-invasion obstacles. Overall, it explores through words and images all the violence and horror of the fighting on Omaha Beach.

Fordham University Press Medieval Poetics and Social Practice: Responding to the Work of Penn R. Szittya
This collection responds to the critical legacy of Penn R. Szittya, the recently retired former chair of Georgetown University’s English Department. Inspired by Georgetown’s Lannan Center for Poetics and Social Practice and its statement that poetry “traverses the fields of aesthetic, social, political, and religious thought,” this work investigates how medieval poetic language reflects and also shapes social, political, and religious worlds. At a moment in contemporary culture when poetry finds its value increasingly challenged, Medieval Poetics and Social Practice looks to the late Middle Ages to assert the indispensability of poetry and poetics in the formation of social structures, actions, and utterances. The contributors offer new readings of canonical late-medieval English poetic texts, such as Langland’s Piers Plowman and Chaucer’s Parliament of Fowls, and, of equal importance, explore texts that have hitherto not held a central place in criticism but make important contributions to the literary culture of the period. Introduced by Seeta Chaganti, the collection includes essays by Richard K. Emmerson, J. Patrick Hornbeck, John C. Hirsh, Moira Fitzgibbons, John T. Sebastian, Nicholas R. Havely, Kara Doyle, Anne Middleton, Jo Ann Moran Cruz, and Mark McMorris.

The stage is New Georgetown, West Virginia.A mysterious figure by the name of 'The Maker' has entered this small community and, almost immediately upon doing so, started entering the minds of the townsfolk.Townsfolk who are as curious as The Maker himself. Like Dr Umbründ, the pint-sized physician with a prodigious capacity for sin; like the three sisters in the house on the hill - one stern, one wild, one mysterious; like the tavern's semi-mythical siren, 'The Bird', who plays spellbinding music from behind a black velvet curtain, and whom no patron has ever laid eyes on; like Odell, a youth with dreams and ambitions that his craven disposition will forever prevent him from seizing; and who has spent the entirety of his erstwhile existence under the crushing heel of Clay, New Georgetown's lead cad and chief alpha male.As we enter these characters' lives, and lightly tread our way through their brains, their bedrooms, their backstories and beyond, we will see what it is they all hope for and hide - and learn just why The Maker has chosen to meet them.

Stanford University Press Enthusiasm: The Kantian Critique of History
Enthusiasm studies what Kant calls a "strong" sense of the sublime, not as an aesthetic feeling but as a form of political judgment rendered not by the active participants in historical events but those who witness them from afar. Lyotard's analysis, preparatory to his work in The Differend and subsequent publications, is a radical rereading of the Kantian "faculties," traditionally understood as functions of the mind, in terms of a philosophy of phrases derived from Lyotard's prior encounters with Wittgenstein's theory of language games. The result is a kind of "fourth" critique based in Kant's later political and historical writings, with an emphasis on understanding the place of those sudden and unscripted events that have the power to reshape the political/historical landscape (such as the French Revolution, May 1968, and others).
