World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Rebel City: Hong Kong's Year Of Water And Fire
SCMP's reporting team looks back at Hong Kong's most wrenching political crisis since its return to Chinese rule in 1997. Anti-extradition bill protests that morphed rapidly into a wider anti-government movement in 2019 left no aspect of the city untouched, from its social compact to its body politic to its open economy. The demonstrations which continued well into 2020 have tested every institution of the city, from the civil service to the police to the courts and even its rail transport operator, and from offices and businesses to universities and schools, and from churches to families and even friends. This book is for anyone seeking to understand not just what Hong Kong has gone through but also the global phenomenon of increasingly leaderless protest movements. Fueled by profound angst about the place of millennial youth in society, widening income inequality, and the speed of digital communications, Hong Kong was in retrospect ripe to be the laboratory for a new-age protest movement, nearly a decade after the Middle East's Arab spring. The essays in the book collectively compose a picture of a society in trauma, bent and broken, but showing signs of an uncanny ability to bounce back. What shape it will be in a few years from now, however, is much harder to predict.Related Link(s)

World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Beyond Bicentennial: Perspectives On Malays
The year 2019 marks Singapore's Bicentennial milestone since the arrival of Sir Stamford Raffles in Singapore in 1819. It was in anticipation of the arrival of the Bicentennial that this book, Beyond Bicentennial: Perspectives on Malays, was initiated. This book is a collection of articles from prominent individuals and academicians that touch not only on the 200 years since the arrival of Raffles, but goes back much earlier, 720 years earlier, when Sang Nila Utama first set foot on the island in 1299.This book hopes to heighten the readers' sense of history and to reflect upon how Singapore has journeyed over the last two centuries, witnessing the perseverance, trials, challenges, and efforts of Singaporeans, and to see how the nation has gone through a transformation from a feudal setting to a cosmopolitan and multi-racial society.Prior to this book, Majulah! 50 Years of Malay/Muslim Community in Singapore was published in 2016 when Singapore celebrated SG50 — an initiative launched to celebrate the nation's 50 years of independence. The book highlighted the progress, the contributions, and the challenges of the community for the past 50 years since Singapore's independence in 1965.Both books can be read hand-in-hand. While Majulah! 50 Years of Malay/Muslim Community in Singapore called on the community to reflect on the past and to look ahead, this book, Beyond Bicentennial: Perspectives on Malays, calls on readers to reflect and re-examine the position and contributions of the Malays to Singapore's history and its development, as Singapore commemorates its Bicentennial.Related Link(s)

World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Chineseness And Modernity In A Changing China: Essays In Honour Of Professor Wang Gungwu
This book is a collection of essays in honour of Professor Wang Gungwu. Professor Wang is not only a great historian on Chinese history in general and the Chinese overseas in particular, but has much wider influence through remarkable domain crossing, namely spatial crossing characterised by geographical straddling between inside and outside of China, temporal crossing from the ancient past to the contemporary, inter-disciplinary crossing from history to the social sciences, and intellectual crossing from the academia to public activism. He has been a long-lasting source of inspiration for understanding some of the most pressing and complex issues in our times, including the nature of China's rise and its implications for the regional and world order. In a nutshell, this book presents Wang as a highly active educator-scholar who has achieved the highest academic standard as well as far-reaching influence over issues that concern all walks of life.By focusing on the theme of Chineseness and China's modernity, this book adds depth to the analysis of China's rise and its implications for the region and the world. It contains a chapter providing the most comprehensive and updated review of Wang's scholarship thus far. Another chapter demonstrates how Wang, based on his deep understanding of Chinese civilisation and history, articulates a distinct view of the world order that differs from either the thesis of 'Thucydides's trap' or the advocacy of mutual accommodation. Interestingly, this book also includes a chapter that highlights Wang's 'Southeast Asian-ness', suggesting that Wang's scholarship cautions against not only western-centric views towards China, but also Sino-centric views towards Southeast Asia. In short, this edited volume is both a reference book for understanding Wang's scholarship and an extension of his scholarship to the analysis of China's growing international influence and its implications for the world order.

World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Geometric Properties Of Natural Operators Defined By The Riemann Curvature Tensor
A central problem in differential geometry is to relate algebraic properties of the Riemann curvature tensor to the underlying geometry of the manifold. The full curvature tensor is in general quite difficult to deal with. This book presents results about the geometric consequences that follow if various natural operators defined in terms of the Riemann curvature tensor (the Jacobi operator, the skew-symmetric curvature operator, the Szabo operator, and higher order generalizations) are assumed to have constant eigenvalues or constant Jordan normal form in the appropriate domains of definition. The book presents algebraic preliminaries and various Schur type problems; deals with the skew-symmetric curvature operator in the real and complex settings and provides the classification of algebraic curvature tensors whose skew-symmetric curvature has constant rank 2 and constant eigenvalues; discusses the Jacobi operator and a higher order generalization and gives a unified treatment of the Osserman conjecture and related questions; and establishes the results from algebraic topology that are necessary for controlling the eigenvalue structures. An extensive bibliography is provided. Results are described in the Riemannian, Lorentzian, and higher signature settings, and many families of examples are displayed.

World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Macroeconomics For Business And Society: A Developed/developing Country Perspective On The "New Economy"
In recent years the world economy has been undergoing drastic changes, the East Asian miracle, the financial crisis, and today, globalization and the fundamental changes associated with the “new economy”. This book integrates these developments with macroeconomics for business managers and policymakers.Macroeconomics is essential background for the business manager and policymaker. Consequently macroeconomics is an integral part of the business curriculum in mature and developing countries alike. And well it should be. The economy affects decisions by investors, manufacturers, distributors, importers and exporters, etc. in all parts of the world. Often, it is the difference between growth and profitability on one hand, and stagnation or failure on the other. In recent years as the world economy has undergone overwhelming changes, especially in East Asia and now in the advanced countries, understanding what is going on in the local economy and “out there in the world” has become a particular challenge to managers. The new developments, of which the “new economy” is the most recent one, do not supercede the basic theoretical framework of macroeconomics. But they add greatly to the challenge of understanding the economic situation and to its uncertainty. This book was originally written to meet the needs of a business curriculum based on the program at the Sasin Graduate Institute of Business Administration of Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok in collaboration with the Wharton and Kellogg Business Schools in the United States. The book is intended for a broad audience — both domestic and international — that includes mature MBA business students, intermediate level undergraduates, and informed laypersons.

World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Linear Systems And Exponential Dichotomy And Structure Of Sets Of Hyperbolic Points
Historically, the theory of stability is based on linear differential systems, which are simple and important systems in ordinary differential equations. The research on differential equations and on the theory of stability will, to a certain extent, be influenced by the research on linear differential systems. For differential linear equation systems, there are still many historical open questions attracting mathematicians. This book deals with the theory of linear differential systems developed around the notion of exponential dichotomies. The first author advanced the theory of stability through his research in this field.Several new important results on linear differential systems are presented. They concern exponential dichotomy and the structure of the sets of hyperbolic points. The book has five chapters: Chapter 1 introduces some necessary classical results on the linear differential systems, and the following chapters discuss exponential dichotomy, spectra of almost periodic linear systems, the Floquet theory for quasi periodic linear systems and the structure of sets of hyperbolic points. This book is a very useful reference in the area of the stability theory of ordinary differential equations and the theory of dynamic systems.

World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Interdisciplinary Approaches To Robot Learning
Robots are being used in increasingly complicated and demanding tasks, often in environments that are complex or even hostile. Underwater, space and volcano exploration are just some of the activities that robots are taking part in, mainly because the environments that are being explored are dangerous for humans. Robots can also inhabit dynamic environments, for example to operate among humans, not just in factories, but also taking on more active roles. Recently, for instance, they have made their way into the home entertainment market. Given the variety of situations that robots will be placed in, learning becomes increasingly important.Robot learning is essentially about equipping robots with the capacity to improve their behaviour over time, based on their incoming experiences. The papers in this volume present a variety of techniques. Each paper provides a mini-introduction to a subfield of robot learning. Some also give a fine introduction to the field of robot learning as a whole. There is one unifying aspect to the work reported in the book, namely its interdisciplinary nature, especially in the combination of robotics, computer science and biology. This approach has two important benefits: first, the study of learning in biological systems can provide robot learning scientists and engineers with valuable insights into learning mechanisms of proven functionality and versatility; second, computational models of learning in biological systems, and their implementation in simulated agents and robots, can provide researchers of biological systems with a powerful platform for the development and testing of learning theories.

World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd China's Economy In 1998: Maintaining Growth And Staving Off The Asian Contagion
As the financial crisis swept the Asia-Pacific, China seemed to be the one economy in the region which had been left “largely unaffected” for various reasons, including its strong economic and financial fundamentals as well as its strong political will to defend the Renminbi, which had so far firmly stood the ground. However, China's economy ended 1998 with only 7.8% growth, slightly falling short of its officially pledged target of 8%. Though China in 1998 was still rated as the best-performing economy in the region, its economic growth momentum had visibly slowed down. The Asian contagion had finally caught up with China. It is not certain if the Chinese economy is entering a slower growth era though, in the short run, China can boost economic growth by expanding domestic demand. Slower economic growth for the country will have significant negative effects on its economic reform programmes and social stability.

This, on the one hand, is stimulating intensive research to understand the most basic properties of quasicrystals in the frame of a generalized crystallography. On the other hand, these properties open the way to technological applications, demonstrated or potential, mostly regarding energy savings. This valuable book discusses those various facets of quasicrystals in five chapters, ending with the author's own interpretation of the properties with respect to their unique structure.

World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Sources Of Consciousness: The Biophysical And Computational Basis Of Thought
The phenomenon of consciousness has long been one of the great mysteries of life, perhaps because it is inexplicable in terms of the deterministic theories of classical science. Today there is some consensus that the key to the understanding of the workings of the mind should be sought in the area of indeterministic quantum mechanics, but until recently there has been little substantial progress in unravelling the mystery. This book is the culmination of several decades of research by the authors in the physical sciences, neurosciences and computer sciences, with comprehensive summaries and references to related work by many other scientists, and presents important advances toward solving the problem. Written for the most part in plain language but supported by appropriate symbolism, the book is truly interdisciplinary, designed for the needs of a wide variety of students and scholars.

World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Modulation Spectrometry Of Neutrons With Diffractometry Applications
Modulation spectrometry of neutrons refers to a measuring principle, characterized by classification of neutron histories in a probabilistic way, not the usual deterministic way. In order to accomplish this, neutron beams entering the sample are modulated by high-transmission, white-beam selectors of the multislit type, such as Fourier or statistical choppers or high-frequency-modulated spin-flippers. In this scheme it is impossible to decide in a unique way through which particular slit any single neutron passed, but the distribution of histories for a large population of neutrons can nevertheless be correctly obtained, by classifying each conceivable history either as a high-probability or as a low-probability event, based on the actual observed state of the neutron selector. So far the principle has been successfully applied to powder diffraction, but it seems to offer extra degrees of freedom if applied to measuring dispersion curves of coherent excitations, such as phonons in single crystals.

World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Nonlinear Optics (4th Edition)
Nicolaas Bloembergen, recipient of the Nobel Prize for Physics (1981), wrote Nonlinear Optics in 1964, when the field of nonlinear optics was only three years old. The available literature has since grown by at least three orders of magnitude. The vitality of Nonlinear Optics is evident from the still-growing number of scientists and engineers engaged in the study of new nonlinear phenomena and in the development of new nonlinear devices in the field of opto-electronics. This monograph should be helpful in providing a historical introduction and a general background of basic ideas both for experts specializing in this discipline and for scientists and students who wish to become acquainted with it.This is the fourth reprint and includes new references to the recent literature.

World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Monte Carlo Methods For Applied Scientists
The Monte Carlo method is inherently parallel and the extensive and rapid development in parallel computers, computational clusters and grids has resulted in renewed and increasing interest in this method. At the same time there has been an expansion in the application areas and the method is now widely used in many important areas of science including nuclear and semiconductor physics, statistical mechanics and heat and mass transfer. This book attempts to bridge the gap between theory and practice concentrating on modern algorithmic implementation on parallel architecture machines. Although a suitable text for final year postgraduate mathematicians and computational scientists it is principally aimed at the applied scientists: only a small amount of mathematical knowledge is assumed and theorem proving is kept to a minimum, with the main focus being on parallel algorithms development often to applied industrial problems.A selection of algorithms developed both for serial and parallel machines are provided.

World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Nonstandard Methods For Stochastic Fluid Mechanics
This book is an exposition of a new approach to the Navier-Stokes equations, using powerful techniques provided by nonstandard analysis, as developed by the authors. The topics studied include the existence and uniqueness of weak solutions, statistical solutions and the solution of general stochastic equations. The authors provide a self-contained introduction to nonstandard analysis, designed with applied mathematicians in mind and concentrated specifically on techniques applicable to the Navier-Stokes equations. The subsequent exposition shows how these new techniques allow a quick and intuitive entrance into the mathematical theory of hydrodynamics, as well as provide a research tool that has proven useful in solving open problems concerning stochastic equations.

World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Zeta Regularization Techniques With Applications
This book is the result of several years of work by the authors on different aspects of zeta functions and related topics. The aim is twofold. On one hand, a considerable number of useful formulas, essential for dealing with the different aspects of zeta-function regularization (analytic continuation, asymptotic expansions), many of which appear here, in book format, for the first time are presented. On the other hand, the authors show explicitly how to make use of such formulas and techniques in practical applications to physical problems of very different nature. Virtually all types of zeta functions are dealt with in the book.

World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Disorder And Competition In Soluble Lattice Models
At present, existing literature on this subject matter can only be said to relate in minor areas to this work. Important concepts in statistical mechanics, such as frustration, localization, Lifshitz and Griffiths singularities, multicritical points, modulated phases, superselection sectors, spontaneous symmetry breaking and the Haldane phase, strange attractors and the Hausdorff dimension, and many others, are illustrated by exactly soluble lattice models. There are examples of simple lattice models which are shown to give rise to spectacular phase diagrams, with multicritical points and sequences of modulated phases. The models are chosen to enable a concise exposition as well as a connection with real physical systems (as dilute antiferromagnets, spin glasses and modulated magnets). A brief introduction to the properties of dynamical systems, an overview of conformal invariance and the Bethe Ansatz and a discussion of some general methods of statistical mechanics related to spontaneous symmetry breaking, are included in the appendices. A number of exercises are included in the text to help the comprehension of the most representative issues.

World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Introduction To Nonlinear Dynamics For Physicists
This series of lectures aims to address three main questions that anyone interested in the study of nonlinear dynamics should ask and ponder over. What is nonlinear dynamics and how does it differ from linear dynamics which permeates all familiar textbooks? Why should the physicist study nonlinear systems and leave the comfortable territory of linearity? How can one progress in the study of nonlinear systems both in the analysis of these systems and in learning about new systems from observing their experimental behavior? While it is impossible to answer these questions in the finest detail, this series of lectures nonetheless successfully points the way for the interested reader. Other useful problems have also been incorporated as a study guide. By presenting both substantial qualitative information about phenomena in nonlinear systems and at the same time sufficient quantitative material, the author hopes that readers would learn how to progress on their own in the study of such similar material hereon.
