The level of sophistication of the problems is similar to that encountered in many introductory courses in probability and statistics. Historically, the theory of stability is based on linear differential systems, which are simple and important systems in ordinary differential equations. As the financial crisis swept the Asia-Pacific, China seemed to be the one economy in the region which had been left “largely unaffected” for various reasons, including its strong economic and financial fundamentals as well as its strong political will to defend the Renminbi, which had so far firmly stood the ground. However, China's economy ended 1998 with only 7.8% growth, slightly falling short of its officially pledged target of 8%. Though China in 1998 was still rated as the best-performing economy in the region, its economic growth momentum had visibly slowed down. The Asian contagion had finally caught up with China.It is not certain if the Chinese economy is entering a slower growth era though, in the short run, China can boost economic growth by expanding domestic demand. Slower economic growth for the country will have significant negative effects on its economic reform programmes and social stability.

Modulation spectrometry of neutrons refers to a measuring principle, characterized by classification of neutron histories in a probabilistic way, not the usual deterministic way. In order to accomplish this, neutron beams entering the sample are modulated by high-transmission, white-beam selectors of the multislit type, such as Fourier or statistical choppers or high-frequency-modulated spin-flippers. In this scheme it is impossible to decide in a unique way through which particular slit any single neutron passed, but the distribution of histories for a large population of neutrons can nevertheless be correctly obtained, by classifying each conceivable history either as a high-probability or as a low-probability event, based on the actual observed state of the neutron selector. So far the principle has been successfully applied to powder diffraction, but it seems to offer extra degrees of freedom if applied to measuring dispersion curves of coherent excitations, such as phonons in single crystals.

At present, existing literature on this subject matter can only be said to relate in minor areas to this work. Important concepts in statistical mechanics, such as frustration, localization, Lifshitz and Griffiths singularities, multicritical points, modulated phases, superselection sectors, spontaneous symmetry breaking and the Haldane phase, strange attractors and the Hausdorff dimension, and many others, are illustrated by exactly soluble lattice models. There are examples of simple lattice models which are shown to give rise to spectacular phase diagrams, with multicritical points and sequences of modulated phases. The models are chosen to enable a concise exposition as well as a connection with real physical systems (as dilute antiferromagnets, spin glasses and modulated magnets). A brief introduction to the properties of dynamical systems, an overview of conformal invariance and the Bethe Ansatz and a discussion of some general methods of statistical mechanics related to spontaneous symmetry breaking, are included in the appendices. A number of exercises are included in the text to help the comprehension of the most representative issues.
