John Wiley & Sons Inc Prebiotics: Development and Application
The prebiotic concept works on the basis that many potentially health-promoting microorganisms are already present in humans. Prebiotics are non-digestible food ingredients that stimulate activity in targeted microorganisms, to improve the health of the individual. Prebiotics can be incorporated into many foodstuffs such as beverages, health and sports drinks, infant formulae, cereals, bread, savoury products and so forth, and are receiving much commercial interest. Prebiotics: Development and Application is the first book to consolidate research in this emerging area of ‘functional food’ study. The book takes a broad view approach to prebiotics, from the conceptual stage, definition, production, evaluation of individual food products and their effect on microbial flora, and their potential relation to diseases. The book starts with an introduction to the prebiotic concept and its development, proceeds to consider the synthesis and manufacture of prebiotics and testing for prebiotic effects, and will then consider different forms of prebiotics (e.g. fructans, galactans, lactulose etc). The book will then look at prebiotic intervention for improving human health (acute and chronic disorders) and animal health. The book closes by considering the sectors for prebiotic foods, development and commercialisation issues, and future developments.

University of Texas Press Chasing Neotropical Birds
From Belize to Brazil, the forests of the American neotropics are home to an astonishing array of birds—over 3,700 different species, or nearly 40 percent of all the birds on earth. Because of this overwhelming abundance, birders come from all over the world to try to catch glimpses of species that can be found nowhere else, such as toucans and antbirds, motmots and manakins, bellbirds and cocks-of-the-rock, and practically all of the planet's hummingbirds. Two such birding enthusiasts are Vera and Bob Thornton, who have spent fifteen years photographing these special and exotic birds in the rainforests of eleven different countries of Central and South America. In this book, you'll find more than a hundred spectacular color photographs they took during their travels, along with a highly entertaining account of their adventures—and misadventures—in chasing these exotic neotropicals. The birds pictured here are among the Thorntons' personal favorites—birds that, in their words, "either dazzled us with their beauty, or charmed us by their behavior, or, in a few cases, simply challenged us by the mystique of their rarity." This latter category includes such elusive and sought-after birds as the Black-crowned Antpitta, the Zigzag Heron, the Rufous-vented Ground-Cuckoo, the Bare-necked Umbrellabird, and the monkey-eating Harpy Eagle. In the accompanying text, Bob Thornton engagingly describes the challenges as well as the magic of negotiating the neotropical rainforests in search of colorful birds to photograph. For those who would like to follow in the Thorntons' footsteps, there are also helpful tips about photographic gear and techniques, preferred places to see the birds, lodging, and guides. For everyone who enjoys excellent nature photography, Chasing Neotropical Birds is a must-have volume on the coffee table or in the library.

Described by New York Times critic John Rockwell as "one of the best non-famous composers this country has to offer," Ben Johnston reconceives familiar idioms--ranging from neoclassicism and serialism to jazz and southern hymnody--using just intonation. Johnston studied with Darius Milhaud, Harry Partch, and John Cage, and is best known for his String Quartet No. 4, a complex series of variations on Amazing Grace. This collection spans forty years and brings together forty-one of Johnston's most important writings, including many rare and several previously unpublished selections. They include position papers, theoretical treatises, program notes, historical reflections, lectures, excerpts from interviews, and letters, and they cover a broad spectrum of concerns--from the technical exegesis of microtonality to the personal and the broadly humanistic. Surrey Books,U.S. Jack Ma: In His Own Words
Hundreds of candid quotes from Chinese tech giant Jack Ma that reveal his thoughts on business values, innovation, competition, teamwork, philanthropy, and more. Ever since the Alibaba Group went public on September 19, 2014—with an initial public offering of a record-breaking $25 billion—Jack Ma, the founder and charismatic “spiritual leader” of the e-commerce behemoth, has been making headlines around the world. Alibaba is now the largest retailer in the world, and since 2015, the company’s online sales and profits have outstripped those of Amazon, eBay, and Walmart combined. Recently, Alibaba’s cloud computing arm has been outperforming major players such as Google and Amazon, and Jack Ma has been widening its investments into new sectors, such as entertainment and electric cars. Ma—the first Chinese entrepreneur to appear on the cover of Forbes and the third-richest man in China—has a net worth that is estimated to be more than $39 billion. But despite Ma’s massive influence in China and in the global tech world, his inspirational rags-to-riches story is relatively unknown to the general American public. Jack Ma: In His Own Words is a detailed look at the thoughts and words of arguably the most prominent figure in internet entrepreneurship in the past 20 years—made up entirely of Ma’s own thought-provoking and candid quotes. Many of these quotes are translated directly from the Chinese press and interviews. For readers who do not read Chinese and have no other access to these materials, this book provides invaluable insight into the mind of one of the world’s most successful business magnates.

Open University Press Paramedics: From Street to Emergency Department Case Book
"A great book written by a truly medical family ... This book will prove invaluable to the student paramedic and a great aid to the practicing paramedic ... The case studies are thought provoking and give an opportunity for students to learn about situations they will encounter during their careers and experienced paramedics and practitioners the opportunity to reflect on similar cases and question their practice ... I would highly recommend this book."Paul Bates (Paramedic), Higher Education Programme Manager, London Ambulance Service NHS Trust, UK"Individuals new to pre-hospital care will find this text well structured and clear. The informative introduction and subsequent case studies are written in an easy to read question and answer style. These provide a starting point for the reader to undertake further focused reading and investigation. A helpful text for students who are new to caring for patients, in the pre-hospital environment."Amanda Blaber, Senior Lecturer, University of Brighton, UK"This book presents a series of medical vignettes of varying complexity. It discusses the differential diagnosis and clinical care, offering important background knowledge to assist the Paramedic in following the best clinical pathway. Fellows and Fellows provide the vital link between the classroom and reality, removing the mysticism from the complex and ever changing world of pre-hospital care"Dr David Zideman, Clinical Lead – Emergency Medical Care, London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games"This is a great introductory text … The language is easy to read and does not use over complicated medical jargon, which can be off putting for novice students (and experienced ambulance personnel alike!) whilst introducing the reader to ‘ambulance language’. The comprehensive glossary is an unexpected find and a fabulous revision tool, explaining many difficult medical concepts and conditions."Emma Redwood, State Registered Paramedic, University of Northampton, UK "Until now there have been very few books that outline the importance of all stages of the care received by a patient. This book fills that gap without overwhelming those new to the paramedic profession. In addition it works well as a supplementary book for anyone working in the pre-hospital field to remind them the importance of seeking a differential diagnosis and not jumping to any conclusions ... A good book for paramedic students to read and enjoy."Ruth Lambert, Student Paramedic, University of Northampton, UKThis accessible book will help both practising and student paramedics prepare to deal with 25 of the most commonly seen pre-hospital care scenarios, as well as to revise for practical exams. Part of a new Case Book series, the book starts with a description of the patient history and examination, then challenges you to spot important signs, determine a likely diagnosis and make important management decisions. This technique helps to cement prior knowledge and teach both scientific and practical knowledge, both vital for today’s paramedic.By looking at the journey of the patient and paramedic, the authors provide a more complete understanding of the care pathway, helping you to be aware of signs of severe illness and develop safe practice. In addition, the book: Encourages you to develop knowledge of pathophysiology, pharmacology and out of hospital emergency treatment plans to point of handover at definitive care Covers a wide range of scenarios, from everyday situations to more complex Contains practical cases, checklists, clinical tools, key information boxes and clear answers to clinical questions The book is written by a unique father and daughter author team, with the complementary perspectives of a paramedic educator and a student.

Luath Press Ltd The Whisky Muse Volume II: Scotch Whisky in Poem and Song
Robin Laing – songwriter, poet, performer – takes the reader on a lyrical tour of the history and lore surrounding Scotland’s national drink. His writing depicts whisky in its many guises; be it a warm comfort on a winter’s night, the perfect accompaniment to beans on toast, or even a perilous substance inciting mayhem and ‘super velocity.’ The Whisky Muse II is an ode to both whisky and the country where its stories began. Laing’s poems are steeped in legend and inspired by a wealth of anecdote; from sea dragons to warring rabbits, culinary finesse to the elusive female haggis. His songs are reminiscent of the foot-stamping and rowdy camaraderie of folk songs performed in a cosy tavern, possibly following a wee dram (or two). So settle down, crack out the Usquebaugh Baul, and join Laing for many a tale of legend, adventure, chaos and love, all in tribute to Scotland’s favourite tipple.

Skyhorse Publishing The Datapreneurs: The Promise of AI and the Creators Building Our Future
A leader in the data economy explains how we arrived at AI—and how we can navigate its future. In The Datapreneurs, Bob Muglia helps us understand how innovation in data and information technology have led us to AI—and how this technology must shape our future. The long-time Microsoft executive, former CEO of Snowflake, and current tech investor maps the evolution of the modern data stack and how it has helped build today’s economy and society. And he explains how humanity must create a new social contract for the artificial general intelligence (AGI)—autonomous machines intelligent as people—that he expects to arrive in less than a decade. Muglia details his personal experience in the foundational years of computing and data analytics, including with Bill Gates and Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, and others that are not household names—yet. He builds upon Isaac Asimov’s Laws of Robotics to explore the moral, ethical, and legal implications of today’s smart machines, and how a combination of human and machine intelligence could create an era of progress and prosperity where all the people on Earth can have what they need and want without destroying our natural environment. The Datapreneurs is a call to action. AGI is surely coming. Muglia believes that tech business leaders, ethicists, policy leaders, and even the general public must collaborate answer the short- and long-term questions raised by its emergence. And he argues that we had better get going, because advances are coming so fast that society risks getting caught flatfooted—with potentially disastrous consequences.

Bloomsbury Publishing PLC US Marine vs North Korean Soldier: Korea 1950
This absorbing study casts light on the tactics, weapons and combat effectiveness of the US Marines and North Korean soldiers who fought one another in August and September 1950. Equipped with Soviet tanks and bolstered by a cadre of combat veterans returning from the Chinese Civil War, North Korea’s army launched its surprise offensive against the Republic of Korea on 25 June 1950; within days Seoul had fallen and the majority of South Korea’s divisions had been shattered. American ground troops rushed to Korea also seemed incapable of stopping the rapidly advancing North Koreans. By August, the remnants of the South Korean and US Army divisions had been pushed into a small corner around the port of Pusan, their backs to the sea. Time was also running out for the North Koreans; virtually all of their planning and preparations were based on a two-month campaign. Although the North Korean People’s Army had enjoyed an impressive string of victories, its losses were no longer being replaced in the needed quantity or quality. It was truly a do-or-die moment for both sides. In the wake of World War II, the United States Marine Corps had shrunk from 473,000 men in 1945 to only 70,000 in 1950. Despite its heavily slashed budget and manpower, the Marine Corps responded swiftly and decisively. Active-duty Marines from all over the globe gathered and for once the Marine Corps even received some of the latest American military equipment; it was the Marines’ esprit de corps that made the real difference, however. Using first-hand accounts and specially commissioned artwork, this study assesses the KPA and US Marine Corps troops participating in three crucial battles – Hill 342, the Obong-Ni Ridge and the Second Battle of Seoul – to reveal the tactics, weapons and combat effectiveness of both sides’ fighting men in Korea in 1950.

Libri Publishing Crash, Bang, Wallop!: The people and products behind the beat from the 1950s to the millennium
Crash, Bang, Wallop! charts the development of drums and their effect on the UK rock and pop music scene, during the second half of the twentieth century. A central thread running through the book is Ivor Arbiter’s influence on the British drumming scene. The book describes the various marques that he imported, marketed and, in three notable cases, created. Descriptions and potted histories of some of the other key brands available over the period are provided, even where they were bitter competitors with Ivor’s businesses. Bob’s dual qualifications of having been a pro drummer since rock was born, plus having sold the things, has given him a unique insight into the development of the modern drum set. Crash, Bang, Wallop! shares his knowledge and experiences in a highly readable package that even non-drummers will appreciate. Enjoy the ride, seen through the eyes of a professional drummer with over 50 years on the stool, who has also retailed them, developed them and written about them.

Watkins Media Limited Simplify: How to Stay Sane in a World Going Mad
How can we live more simply, learn to appreciate what we have and root our way of being in the Earth we have inherited? By living simply and becoming an Earth Warrior. As life keeps urging us to go faster, many of us are moving in the opposite direction... we are looking for SLOWNESS, for stillness, to live more natural, less complex lives. Bob Hillary spent a year living off grid, an experience that taught him how to live simply. This meant downscaling, re-wilding, un-teching and finding and doing things that are free. These philosophies provided a framework for the 21 practices he shares in this book. They range from letting stillness be your friend to learning to say 'no' and practising gratitude, and they offer fun and practical ways for you to start making simple living part of your everyday life. Bob also looks at the crucial process of self-healing, which needs to take place so that you can fully embrace the book's closing section on action - how best to take the simple living message out into the world. This is a manual for modern times, teaching us how to be Earth Warriors and live in a more joyful, positive, meaningfully and above all simple way. It is guide to creating positive action, to walking the right path and making the right choices.

Pen & Sword Books Ltd The Spartan Supremacy 412-371 BC
Sparta was a small city which consistently punched above its weight in the affairs of classical Greece, happily meddling in the affairs of the other cities. For two centuries her warriors were acknowledged as second to none. Yet at only one period in its long history, in the late fourth and early third century BC, did the home of these grim warriors seem set to entrench itself as the dominant power in the Greek world. This period includes the latter stages of the Peloponnesian War from 412 BC to the Spartan victory in 402, and then down to the Spartan defeat by the Thebans at Leuctra in 371 BC, where it all began to unravel for the Spartan Empire Surprisingly few previous books have covered the tumultuous first decades of the fourth century BC, particularly when compared to the ample coverage of the Peloponnesian War. As the authors explain, although the earlier period has the benefit of Thucydides' magisterial history, the period covered here is actually well served by sources and well worthy of study. There are many interesting characters here, including Alcibiades, Lysander, Agesilaus, Pelopidas and Epaminondas, to name but a few. In addition there are several campaigns and battles that are reported in enough detail to make them interesting and comprehensible to the reader. Bob Bennett and Mike Roberts untangle the complexities of this important but unduly neglected period for the modern reader.

Recipient of three National Endowment for the Arts grants and with works exhibited at the prestigious Biennale de Paris, New York's Whitney Museum, the de Menil Collection in Houston, and other venues, Bob 'Daddy-O' Wade has been 'keeping it weird' since 1961 when he arrived in Austin with his '51 custom Ford hot rod and his slicked-back hair. Primed to study art at the University of Texas, Wade's coif and dragster earned him his trademark moniker, and the abstract, welded sculptures he fashioned from automobile bumpers in his frat house basement laid the foundations for the distinctive, larger-than-life art pieces that would eventually make him famous.Daddy-O is the creator of the forty-foot iguana that perched atop the Lone Star CafÉ in New York City, the immense cowboy boots (entered in the Guinness Book of World Records) outside San Antonio's North Star Mall, and Dinosaur Bob, who graces the roof of the National Center for Children's Illustrated Literature in Abilene, Texas. He is widely recognized as one of the progenitors of the 'Cosmic Cowboy Culture' that emerged in Texas during the 1970s.Daddy-O's Book of Big-Ass Art features images of more than a hundred of Wade's most famous pieces, complete with the wild tales that lie behind the art, told in brief essays by both Wade and more than forty noted artists and writers familiar with Wade's work.
