Since she stepped onstage unannounced at the 1959 Newport Folk Festival, Joan Baez has occupied a singular place in popular music. Within three years, she had recorded three best-selling albums and had embarked on a tour of southern US campuses, playing to integrated audiences in an era of segregation. When Time magazine chronicled the folk revival in November 1962, her portrait was on the cover. Her voice was “as lustrous and rich as old gold.” She has mentored generations of singer-songwriters, most famously Bob Dylan. But Joan Baez has always been much more than simply a singer. A Civil Rights Journey presents the astonishing archive of Dr Doris Derby: photographer, activist, and professor of anthropology. Here we see the speeches and protests that gave the movement its defining moments, as well as vital figures including Muhammad Ali, Alice Walker, Fannie Lou Hamer, and Jesse Jackson. We also see classrooms and church halls, doctors and secretaries: everyday scenes of joy, frustration, curiosity, and connection, in which the determination and collective actions and resolve and actions of the movement are equally expressed. This extensive volume presents Derby's images in sequences that between them document rural and urban poverty, offer lucid ethnographies of particular streets and families, track the day-to-day lives of African American children growing up in the Mississippi Delta, and bear witness to such pivotal events as the Jackson State University shooting, the funeral of Martin Luther King Jr., and the 1968 Democratic Convention. Derby's photographs offer us an invaluably rich portrait of a historical moment whose effects have defined today's world and issues a vital reassertion of the work that remains to be done. Over the years, we found ourselves going from college-age gals drinking Boones Farm to women with jobs splurging on labels we thought were oh-so-classy, such as Kendall Jackson. Swiftly, our knowledge grew even more and we matured into women who attended dinner parties instead of just clubs – or even better: wine bars. Napa quickly surpassed spring break in Cancun, and before we knew it…we were settling down…having babies and raising a family. Dinner parties and wine tastings? Whaaa? We were lucky if we had time to shower. Wine who? But, as we often do as mothers – we persevered. As the kids grew, we found, and even required, more time for ourselves. Becoming a mom didn’t mean we had to give up everything we knew; it just meant we had to get more creative after a day of “mommy this” and someone constantly pulling on our leg or needing our attention. Rather than attending lavish events where wine was served and we had no bedtime; we grabbed a bottle of red or white depending on the mood or stresses of the day. Some days required a nice, sweet white for celebration – say after naptimes proved successful for the third day in a row. Or, the days that definitely warranted a smooth, bolder red (#epicfail)—accompanied by a cozy blanket and Netflix.
