It is no coincidence that the poet Volker von Törne was, for many years, the Director of Aktion Sühnezeichen Friedensdienste (Action for Atonement - Service for Peace), the German charitable organisation for education and reparation in countries throughout the world that have suffered under fascism and other oppressive regimes. His father had been a member of the SS in Germany in the Second World War, and as a consequence, his poetry is written from the perspective of someone who suffered, through no fault of his own, from terrible guilt after the war. This selection from von Törne's collected poems is particularly significant in that it is a powerful and moving articulation of the psychological burden still carried by countless people today whose voices are not often heard, a burden which von Törne's powerful, poignant and sometimes angry poetry helps us all the better to understand.

Martina Sauter’s (*1974) photographic work portrays interiors with complex planes of space and time that simultaneously explore their construction through the media. Her work focuses on how humans design the spaces in which they live and how internal spaces are created through personal experience and by what is conveyed by the media. Martina Sauter combines photographs that she herself has taken with stills from films and screenshots of newspaper images to create visual spaces with unfamiliar perspectives within which fragmented figures or text appear. This encourages the viewer to explore ostensible representations of reality while challenging them to attempt to solve the spatial pictorial puzzles they depict. One group of works is dedicated to unusual species of animals, which are positioned in new habitats through the use of collages. These works are unique visual events encompassing partial areas that glow in the dark, providing an opening into further additional worlds. The Gang’s All Queer draws from interviews with over 50 gay gang- and crime-involved young men in Columbus, Ohio, the majority of whom are men of color in their late teens and early twenties, as well as on-the-ground ethnographic fieldwork with men who are in gay, hybrid, and straight gangs. Panfil provides an eye-opening portrait of how even members of straight gangs are connected to a same-sex oriented underground world. Most of these young men still present a traditionally masculine persona and voice deeply-held affection for their fellow gang members. They also fight with their enemies, many of whom are in rival gay gangs. Most come from impoverished, ‘rough’ neighborhoods, and seek to defy negative stereotypes of gay and Black men as deadbeats, though sometimes through illegal activity. Some are still closeted to their fellow gang members and families, yet others fight to defend members of the gay community, even those who they deem to be “fags,” despite distaste for these flamboyant members of the community. Hasidism, a Jewish religious movement that originated in Poland in the eighteenth century, today counts over 700,000 adherents, primarily in the U.S., Israel, and the UK. Popular and scholarly interest in Hasidic Judaism and Hasidic Jews is growing, but there is no textbook dedicated to research methods in the field, nor sources for the history of Hasidism have been properly recognized. Studying Hasidism, edited by Marcin Wodziński, an internationally recognized historian of Hasidism, aims to remedy this gap. Some of the earliest recorded windmills were built in Suffolk, and since the middle ages Suffolk has been a county where windmills predominated. In the 1830s there were over 430 windmills in the county, though the advent of steamand oil engines and roller mills meant there was a rapid decline in numbers later in the nineteenth century. This survey lists all the surviving mills and mill remains. It also explains the technicalities of how the differenttypes of mill worked, emphasising the particular local types and developments; and describes the life of the millers and the work of the millwrights. There is also an account of the restoration work which has been undertaken on them. Fully illustrated with photographs of what can still be seen today.
